District Attorney Looking For Answers In Fire That Claimed 3 Children

November 7, 2011

The Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office and a local district attorney are continuing their investigation  into a Wednesday night house fire that claimed the lives of three children in Atmore.

Family members identified the children as3-year old Aniyia Abner, 3-year old Takia Abner and 22-month old Michael Coleman.

Escambia County (Ala.) District Attorney Steve Billy says his office is awaiting the outcome of an ongoing investigation by the the Alabama State Marshal. Pending the outcome of the investigation, the children’s mothers, 18-year old twins Akeivia Abner and Jekeevia Abner, could face criminal charges.

“We’ve still got to gather the hospital records. Of course, the children were sent to Mobile for an autopsy, so we’re waiting on the preliminary findings from the pathologist. Of course, we’re still trying to determine the cause of the fire and interviewing witnesses. So there’s a lot of unknowns out there that are still under investigation,” Billy told FOX 10 TV.

Initial reports said that an oven door was open inside the home at the time of the fire, perhaps indicating that it was being used as a heat source. Photographs taken Thursday morning (see top of  page) clearly show the oven door inside the kitchen of the home propped partially open. But it was not immediately known if that was the cause of the fire.

Reports indicated that the two young mothers were at another location several blocks from the home at the time of the fire.

    @curious

    Talk around town is that the grandmother and other family has contacted DHR without action being taken. But, that is just talk and I have no personal knowledge of the family prior to this incident. If that is true, I think it should be investigated alone with the family. DHR in this state is joke.

    @ so I am curious to know; you said the mmothers have neglected these babies before. Others hod to rescue them from neglect. Did anyone ever call DCF on them in regards to their constant neglect? Is this a case where DCF was never called or where DCF once again failed to do their jobs and protect the children once again?

    The two mothers should be held accountable for their actions. You NEVER leave a child alone no matter what ! There is absolutely NO EXCUSE !! God Bless these precious innocent children ! Justice should be served in this case !

    I still would like to know what was so important that the 2 mothers had to leave 3 babies home alone in the middle of the night….I hope that the legal system holds them accountable and that the guilt stays with them forever.

    no one wishes vengence. its called justice that the people want. these girls have been told time and time again about how they treated these kids, had many good family and friends that tried in vain to help thier selfish tails, neighbors that kept eyes on and rescued these kids from their neglect before. There is absolutely NO excuse whatsoever…and for that they should accept thier punishment and serve prison time. Yes, they may be haunted for the rest of their lives for their selfish neglect, but that is the bed they made for themselves…despite family, friends and neigbors attempts to help. Its a shame the kids had to suffer one last time and so horribly. Hopefully, justice will be served.

    Dear Lord, please be with all involved in this terrible affair. We know the precious children are now safe in your arms but the pain is only beginning for those left behind. Whatever caused those two young girls to leave their babies and go wandering will haunt them the rest of their lives and will no doubt torture the grandparents,friends and neighbors as well as the first responders, firefighters and EMTs .Let us not wish for vengeance on these girls,rather to pray for their souls and pray for the broken hearts of those involved. Bless them all Dear Lord and help us as outsiders to not be too quick to judge others. In Jesus name,Amen
