Three Young Children Left Home Alone Killed In Fire (Updated With Names)

November 3, 2011

Three young children left home alone died when fire ripped through an Atmore residence Wednesday night.

Anthony Coley, grandfather of all three children, identified them as 3-year old Aniyia Abner, 3-year old Takia Abner and 22-month old Michael Coleman. He said the children belonged to two different mothers, 18-year old twins Akeivia Abner and Jekeevia Abner.

For an updated to this story, click here.

Alabama State Deputy Fire Marshal Mike Talley and members of the Atmore Fire Department were on scene throughout the morning carefully working to pinpoint the origin of the fire.

Reports indicated that the two young mothers were at another location several blocks from the home at the time of the fire.

The small wood frame home on 1st Street between Carver Avenue and Martin Luther King Avenue was fully engulfed when the Atmore Fire Department arrived on scene just after 8 p.m. Wednesday. First responders quickly pulled the three children from fire, but they were unable to save them.

Initial reports said that an oven door was open inside the home at the time of the fire, perhaps indicating that it was being used as a heat source. The Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office will continue their investigation and make a final determination on the cause of the fire.

Authorities said that, depending on the outcome of the Fire Marshal’s investigation, the two mothers could be charged in connection with the death of their children.

Further information has not yet been released.

I will forever love my babies Ak’eevia Abner and Te’keevia Abner and as a mother I know that y’all loved your babies. Despite how people say things that they don’t know are try to judge you there is only one judge and that’s GOD. I believe in both of you and know that this was not intentional only people that didn’t know you would post negative comments. We can’t bring back the past but we can only move toward the future. Always remember that your family love you dearly and we are awaiting the both of your return. We will never go against you and will always have open arms open. stay strong and know ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE… LOVE ALWAYS, MOTHER (KESHIA).

Here’s the deal & how this thing works:
Those defenseless children who could not make good, sound decisions for themselves are left to depend on parents to do so for them. It is very unfortunate & quite obvious that these mothers were ill-equipped to be parents. There is no excuse, reason or justification for the having left those children unprotected or unsupervised. There is no condemnation, judgment or hypocrisy in my words—these are the facts which are UNACCEPTABLE. We could talk all day long about “babies raising babies” or make excuses for these twin mothers obviously not having sound parental skills or the ability to use good judgment and we will still end up with 3 young children having died a horrible death. Have any of you ever burned your finger on a light bulb, a match or soe other form of fire? Multiply that by 100!!!! Even if the stove in that home malfunctioned due to no one’s fault, THE CHILDREN WERE LEFT ALONE!!! Certainly, this is a sad case of affairs all around, both for the children, mothers and other family members & friends, BUT this horrific incident DID NOT HAVE TO HAPPEN. These children were left unsupervised on purpose and for that reason alone, these mothers will have to be held accountable. There are no winners here. The children are sadly gone and the 18 yr-old mothers lives will be a living hell from this day forward. They will be left to grieve their children & their poor judgment and possibly be imprisoned for years. There’s certainly no happy ending here. There’s no need to pray fr the children now, they’re gone. Pray for the mothers that they will take ownership for their culpability in this debacle and that will repent for their behavior and hopefully learn something from this terrible event.

What is the world was so important for thoes ladies to leave their kids at home alone. One thing you don’t do and that is leave your small kids at home alone anything can happen. I’m a mothe of thirteen kid and the younger one is 12 years old the oldest is 29 never in my life did i leave them alone in a house alone all by themselves. i couldn’t go out because i had thoes babies to raise and i stayed at home with them so there is bo excuse for what thoes two mother did. right now i still don’t leave my 12 or 14 yeas old home alone. poor excuse for a mother will do something like that. thank God all my 13 is still here.

    .
Noone knows what really happened here, only that the fire burned the house down and the children were killed.

These young mothers are not to blame! They can’t be held accountable for what happened.

what ever was so important to them girl who left their baby’s all alone it could have waited or you could have taken your children with you instead of you two being irresponsible mothers and not caring for your children’s safety and whatever may be coming your way you deserve it because them baby’s did not ask to be brought into this world they didn’t even have time to get their life started

I do not have time to argue with these cross road philosophers, I have a luncheon engagement in Walnut Hill. It did not matter weather or not Solomon kept his mouth shut or not, look where he wound up. It is better to have a servant and be despised, than loved by all and not have bread to eat, that makes more sense to me. This horrible thing, is done with, Im going to let Alabama deal with it’s own, and get on with my life. Im ready for some good news.

As a parent of a 3 year old I cannot imagine leaving my child alone in a room within our home. Might as well leave her alone so I can go down the street. Anything can happen. How in the world did so many family members think it was ok to leave these 3 helpless babies home alone?

Are you kidding me!!! Yes I am sure the mothers are grieving but how can you sleep knowing your neglectful and unforgiveable selfishness took the life from 3 sweet babies. My heart is broken for the suffering these children had to endure before Jesus decided to call them home.

If the Escambia County District Attorney fails to file criminal charges against these so called mothers that will be an even bigger tragedy. Let them grieve long enough to burry these babies and as soon as the funeral is over the Atmore PD needs to walk in and arrest these women!

Unbelievable! God bless you sweet innocent babies!

But, of course, being wise enough to not show oneself too be a fool would imply wisdom, not foolishness. Or at least people could be deemed inetlligent simply for saying nothing when in fact they might not have an opinion.

If you have something to say about this story, say a prayer.

  16. ABC on November 4th, 2011 1:15 am

Ladies and Gentlemen, we must all pray for the family of these precious little souls, however we also must as adult human parents and grandparents recognize the facts, No real adult mature individual would be so neglectful as to leave their child alone, How in anyones rational mind could they believe it was safe to leave little ones unattended, good grief in this day and age it isnt even safe to leave children in their early teens alone with the dangers in our world nation and comunities, Naturally prayers need to be sent up for the families of these precious little ones, the guilt these girls will bear for the rest of their lives will be tremendous., These little lives are loaned to us and as Mothers and Fathers we are to be greatful we are blessed to have them and be seriously resposible for all facets of their upbringing and protect them with our own lives.

  17. Ksk on November 4th, 2011 12:16 am

These girls loved the house they were at and the habits! Dhr had already came out that week and did nothing…so God took his kids!

  18. Maggie on November 3rd, 2011 10:40 pm

I can only imagine what those girls are feeling, and the grandparents of the children as well…And the guilt that must be on their shoulders…HOWEVER..
Being a mother myself..I’m curious as to what these girls were thinking?!? Seriously, if you were any kind of mother in the first place you’d be more concerned with what time your kids get their baths and go to bed, then whatever was “down the street’..You’re responsible for those babies lives the minute you bring them into this world. You’re held accountable for everything that happens to them from that moment on, and this is no exception. They didn’t ask to be left in a house alone, and they didn’t ask for mothers who are without common sense. What they needed was love, and protection..and you failed at even that! So I can only hope, where ever you gals may be tonight, that you’ll be thinking about the terror that those innocent children probably felt, due to your neglect , and then the weight of this rests upon you, and that it is unbearable.

  19. Christina on November 3rd, 2011 9:17 pm

People who say, “This is what happens when you have babies having babies” need to think again. I’m a 19 year old girl with an 8 month old daughter. Never in my life would I leave her alone anywhere. It’s the person alone that did this. Not by age, gender, or any other thing. There are parents over 30 leaving their children alone and purposely murdering them. It depends on the person. Stop judging “books by their cover.”

  20. another outlook on November 3rd, 2011 9:01 pm

With children ( 18 year old with a 4 year old…do the math) having children this is what happens. Someone needed better parenting skills taught to them, and their parents needed it taught to them, and their parents needed taught to them, right on down the line.

  21. Jay on November 3rd, 2011 8:54 pm

Like so many people do, they have children so they can get welfare checks. That way they can do what they want without working. So they half take care of thier children then when something happens to them they get upset causes they just lost thier meal ticket. It is sad to say, but you see it all the time. The children are the ones that suffer. Peace be with them.

Starting this May I will have 20 + years in the Fire service, actually started in Atmore as a Firefighter got a lot of experiance. Even though this whole thing is a very horrible thing. As far as the mothers yea they or someone should be held responsible those Babies were just that Babies.

Some of you have mentioned the Firefighters and EMT,s and Police officers, that is one hundred percent right while the families are able to have their grieving process (which they should do not take what iam saying the wrong way) these Emergency service Workers are all expected to show up do your job and act as if this is part of the job,WELL GUESS WHAT!!!!!!!! it’s not part of the job I don’t go to work thinking well I will find a dead child or adult, in a fire and “that will be my day”.
These Firefighters, EMT’s and Police officers are human too, they have to go home to their kids and family most of whom do not understand why they want to do this line of work. well let me tell you it’s from the Heart sure not for the pay. Many years ago I found a small child actually there were two fatallitiesin this fire both small kids, to this day I have nightmares about those children, so trust me it doesn’t just go away, someone spoke of the Kids saying they are now in Gods hands so true, they are in a lot better place than we are. My point is Mayor,City Council members,FireChief,Police Chief, EMS supervisors get your people HELP!!!!! now please do not make them wait, start it now so they can and will have a future and not turn to other things too stop the pain and the questions, remember they work for the city and should be offered this, CISD Critical incident stress debreifing. GOD BLESS ALL !!!!!!!!!!! Escambia County Alabama does not have a CISD team while other Counties and cities do… Why can’t either the Cities or the County step up and send some people for training or contact some of the Pastors in the communities. If anyone has information or would like to help start a CISD team please call me I am pleading nothing can be done to bring these babies back, but the emergency workers deserve a life after this and closure, Please understand I will have the Family in my prayers too.. (Danny Lowery 251-359-1934.)

“I don’t understand why so many people are saying that they are praying for the children in one sentence and then in the very next sentence condemning the parents to hell!!!! Isn’t that hypocritical?”

I don’t see where you would consider it hypocritical. They are praying for innocent children who suffered and died a horrible death. That’s reasonable.

They are angry at the ones who put them in that situation, effectively murdering them. Even if they didn‘t intend to do so, they obviously didn‘t intend NOT to do so. I hope they didn’t realize what happened was a real possibility when they left them alone. Condemnation is reasonable.

There might be an excuse which would justify leaving them in that situation but I haven’t thought of one yet. Further, it doesn’t matter how good the excuse, the results can’t be undone. Looking back, it probably wasn’t a good enough excuse.

Assuming the mothers were just too immature to realize what they were doing, my sympathy goes out to them as well. It would give me nightmares for years to come no matter what follows.

    Jessica,

I know what ur saying but GOD leaves things to us sometimes to deal with….GOD entrusted the little babies in those womens care; he gave them a gift and what did they do, they slapped him in the face by not caring for those babies. GOD loves us all but I bet he feels anger too. There in excuse in the book that these mothers could give to convince me or anyone else why they would leave these babies at home alone with an opened hot oven. If it was an emergency, 1 should have stayed or take the babies with you…Their priorties should have been their babies first and everything else 2nd…WHAT DO YOU SUPPOSE THEIR LAST THOUGHTS WERE; I BET THEY WERE CRYING AND SCREAMING “MOMMY”…I pray these women don’t get off lightly in their sentences…..That would send a terrible msg to all the young irresponsible mothers who care for their children properly. The least and I mean least they should is manslaughter…I would prefer murder charges…That is what they did.

  28. Mrs.Goodie on November 3rd, 2011 3:27 pm

As a grandmother i can not even imagine how i would feel if that had been my grandchildren. It hurts just looking at the pictures.I know God called these angels home for a reason,we will understand by and by.As a mother i can not understand what in the world made these children(that’s what these girls are) leave their babies alone. We don’t know all the circumstances and it is so easy to judge.I just don’t see any situation that would make it alright to do that.
    Just to sad.

  29. Jessica on November 3rd, 2011 2:07 pm

I don’t understand why so many people are saying that they are praying for the children in one sentence and then in the very next sentence condemning the parents to hell!!!! Isn’t that hypocritical? No one knows the full story or what really happened. I am very sad by what has happened and I am very sad that the community where I grew up and loved is being so hateful! We all should pray for God to take care of the family! Those of us who want to get angry at the parents (myself included because when I first heard of this tragedy I, too, found myself getting angry at them for leaving the children alone) should pray that God will change our hearts and show us how HE sees them. Even if the parents did leave the children alone, God loves them anyway! I pray that we will all be able to show the parents the love of God!

  30. Safebear on November 3rd, 2011 1:23 pm

Probably the first thing they said when they ran to the house was “My Babies, somebody get my babies…” They care about them when they screw up…

1st of all, DHR is a joke. Even if someone had called DHR, they call before they come and investigate(if they even respond at all). 2nd, these mothers knew right from wrong. Anybody knows you dont leave kids alone. They should be charged to the fullest!! Nothing is so important BLOCKS away that you leave YOUNG children ALONE for. They didnt want to be bothered w/ these kids. It breaks my heart that there are so many UNFIT parents out there and children are left to lookout for themselves.

  32. Karla on November 3rd, 2011 12:53 pm

How very sad. Why would anyone leave such young children alone? God help this family.

  33. chrstefl on November 3rd, 2011 12:43 pm

This sickens me. How? Why would you leave your children to their own discretion. Pathetic women. Women like that are not mothers. Mothers protect their children. I hope they are prosecuted. My heart goes out to the children.

  34. Cindy Leonard on November 3rd, 2011 12:14 pm

There is not reason for any parents to leave children this age home alone.
My only comfort is that hopefully smoke inhulation killed them b4 they felt anything. As for a parent in this case I won’t even call um that. May God take care of them when their time comes murder is a sin . And As far as I am concerned it is murder on 3 counts.
If a lawyer gets the parent or parents off on this one he or she should be punished also.
And if a judge lets them live he too should be punished.

  35. rex walker on November 3rd, 2011 11:34 am

Very sad! This brought back instant memories of my 7 cousins who were left home alone. The olest one was 9.

There mother had to run an errand and asked her teenage daughter to stay there with them until she got back. The teen daughter did not wait for her mother to return. She left her 7 brothers and sisters home alone and went to the movie theater. The house caught fire. All 7 died.

  38. AJb on November 3rd, 2011 11:05 am

This is Pretty sad. I have seen the mother of these kids around atmore and she has one of those attitudes, Why god would give a child to these kinds of people we may never know. I really hope she gets the book tossed at her and she serves time for murder.

  39. Cindy on November 3rd, 2011 10:43 am

This is what happens when you have babies having babies. There will have to come a point when morals, values and Godly beliefs takes precedence over sex, drugs and irresponsibility. When will our children learn to love and respect themselves enough to do the RIGHT thing…not the thing that feels good at the moment!!!! Sick to my stomach and mad as hell!!!

y’all please pray for the medical professionals who worked this case. Everyone from Firefighters, EMTs, Crimescene investigators, Hospital workers or coroners office. Eventhough they do these jobs everyday it is NEVER EVER easy to have to work a case with a child involved, let alone 3. Pray that God gives them strength to cope.

I am not forgetting the remaining family and friends, I know they need strength too. I hope the little ones didn’t suffer. And while I do have some angry feelings towards how this happened, right now I can only cry for the little ones eventhough I’m sure they are with Jesus and safe, it’s still a tragedy for the ones left on earth.

My heart is breaking… poor children… they had no chance on this earth with …what words to say… They had no chance with such irresponsible mothers! THIS is why some people do not deserve God’s blessing with children.

If I’ve EVER needed to run an alternate heat source to keep my family warm, I’d sit up ALL night right by their sides!!! But to leave them! and go a few blocks away! What was so important to be away from the kids! A one year old?! and at most four years old?!

I seriously hope these mothers live the rest of their lives with this haunting their memories and thoughts… Its not for me to judge, God will do that.

This makes me so MAD. A few minutes of pleasure has ruined these women’s lives FOREVER, and taken away precious children not only from the mothers but other family members and friends who loved them. Leaving them alone is totally NOT understandable in any circumstance, especially where two mom’s were involved. ONE should have stayed with the children. BUt, two families and lives have been devastated.. SAD. SAD. SAD.

THIS IS A SHAME. I cannot believe this. Those poor firefighters that had to carry these babies out. That is something they will never forget. May God be with the children. The parents will pay for this in due time. This is nothimg less than NEGLECT. Can anyone say drug test.

  51. Thinker on November 3rd, 2011 8:55 am

This is crazy. I’m thinking we need a list of volunteer babysitters the way young mothers are leaving these kids home alone. Like the woman who went to Mobile for the weekend whose twin ended up dead in the trash can. Women are not born with a take care of gene. They have got to learn from someone. But I promise I would be glad to help these mothers out if I knew they just wanted to get away from the kids for awhile. Anything to avoid such a sad ending to the babies very short lives. This is babysitting like Grandma does. Trouble is they require all these classes and a license to change a diaper these days. So I don’t think we could do it. My kids didn’t choke to death-because I watched them. I didn’t need to know CPR.

  52. George on November 3rd, 2011 8:47 am

I bet this will stick with the fire-men for the rest of their lives. God Bless all who tried to save these children. As for the mothers I hope we see them in Jail where they most certainly belong because there is never an excuse for leaving children age 1-4 alone. These children had no chance.

They should at least be charged with manslaughter…Hopefully the courts will use their brains and moral conscious to confict the mothers, even if the alabama law doesnt state an age….I am with everyone else, who in their right mind would leave one and four year olds by themselves….Mothers who have no concern for their children. Neither do they have morals or common sense. I would not even leave my child home alone until they were about 13 and even then I had neighbors that would keep watch out for them….The mothers need to emotionally suffer for what they have done….What do you think those childrens last thoughts were…”WHERE MY MOMMY”. I know I dont know these women and I am judging them but dang it..There actions speak louder than words

  56. Me on November 3rd, 2011 8:04 am

What kind of parents leave children home alone??? I thought mothers were born with the natural instinct to love, protect, and take care of their children? May these three little angels now be in peace and in the Lord’s arms. As for their parents, may you see these precious babies in your dreams every night.

  57. sniper on November 3rd, 2011 7:56 am

“COULD BE CHARGED” sounds like some authorities should get involved… you shouldnt be allowed to have kids unless you can afford to heat your home. WHAT A TRAGEDY!

  58. Mother on November 3rd, 2011 7:39 am

The only good thing about this is that the children are now safe and in a better place because now they are in good hand with the Lord. First of all NEVER leave children home alone when they are so young!! Second of all NEVER use an oven to heat the house, besides it wasn’t even cold outside! I never ran a heater last night. This is so sad and I do think the mother’s should be charged for having some part in it because there is no explanation for this. I hate reading about children getting killed or hurt because of their pathetic parents that don’t take care for them or even care about them. I have a 9 month old and I wouldn’t even think about leaving my child alone. I don’t even go outside without her unless I have my moniter with me at all times and I have only done that twice and I am not even 10 ft away from the house. Grr… I just wish parents would take responsibility and raise their children like they should!! God Bless those children, may you rest in peace!!

You don’t need a law or DHR to tell you what common sense should. Those children should never have been left alone anything could have happened to them besides the fire. The mothers deserve the max.My question is what were the mothers doing blocks away that the children had to be left alone?Looks like DHR should have already been involved.Drug tests I am sure should be in order.GOD bless the children they are the victims that had to pay the price for these so called mothers horrible actions.

I know the little angels are okay because they have gone to be with God. I can’t understand why anyone would leave children that young alone. I don’t won’t to try to be the judge and jury, because I don’t know the circumstances either.
My heart hurts, because the fear I know the little ones must have felt. I know God has them wrapped in his arms now letting them know everything is okay. God please be with the families of these little ones. Thank you God for loving and caring for us.

Just so yall know there is not a law in alabama that states how old a child can be left alone at home and this come out of DHR mouth. So when u live in alabama that is what u get a sorry justice system

  62. susan on November 3rd, 2011 7:16 am

There is NEVER EVER ANY excuse or reason to leave any child home alone, even for a minute. Its a real shame DHR did not take ac tion sooner. Prayers to the loving family members that tried to get these kids away from the irresponsible so called mothers, prayers to the medics, firemen and hospital staff who tried in vain to save these kids…they cared more about these kids than thier own sorry mothers. I dont want to hear one word or tear from these 2 parents. They will be the first to cry and put on a big show….when their butts should have been at HOME with these kids or taken the kids WITH them if they had to go somewhere. God bless those little kids and curse the sorry parents.

This makes me sick to my stomach!!! I have 3 kids and i don’t even like leaving them alone to go to the bathroom. Don’t wait until after the investigation to press charges. They were neglectful when left those babies alone!

  64. Melissa M. on November 3rd, 2011 6:04 am

Why in the heck was children left at home. The two mothers need to be put in a house and burned like the poor babies. An eye for an eye. There is no reason they could not of brought the babies with them or at least one of them stay there at the house.

There is no need to pray for these children, they are safe with the lord. I wonder what emergency had called these mothers away from their little ones? Lord be with these people and us all.

  66. tallyho on November 3rd, 2011 6:01 am

Cannot think of any reason that a mother, not one but two would be several blocks away while thier children at that young age should of been home alone. I reckon it was just mothers being mothers . Like kids will be kids.

  67. Jane on November 3rd, 2011 5:55 am

Why would anyone leave small children alone! These “mothers” should be charged with child endangerment resulting in the death of a child, child neglect and anything else that they can possibly be charged with!! Bless the little children and let them be with Jesus, i hope they didn’t suffer too much.

Praying for all involved. Although,i cant understand why anyone would leave children so young alone,i pray for these parents. Please remember the ff’s,emts that worked this fire, for we are human and calls like this are hard on us. God bless these babies!

Hopefully Alabama has child abandonment laws. These two mothers should be strung up on the nearest tree for leaving their kids by themselves. The smoke enhilation hopefully kept them from suffering any long term suffering such as burning to death.

These children may have grown up one to do great things that may have benefited our country or even the world. We will never know because these sorry excuses for mothers.

It’s becoming more common for parents to leave kids at home or in the cars at grocery stores. Go to any Winn Dixie or the Grocery Advantage on the weekends and you’ll see plenty of kids left in cars in the parking lots by themselves.

Precious Heavenly Father, the children are ok, for they are now with you. Father, be with the parents of these children as they begin the grieving process, be with all the family members, friends, schoolmates, etc., as they try to get through the pain of this tragedy. You alone Lord, are the only One able to eventually ease their pain, and You alone are the only One who can give them the strength to eventually get through this. Be with them now Lord, wrap Your loving arms around them. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
