TEASPOON

Return to the History of Century

Before the town of Century was named Century, it was called Teaspoon. Teaspoon was an all -black community. The area was probably settled after the 1860's war by freed slaves. An attraction in Teaspoon was the many jobs in the forest products industry. Most men of the area probably worked at the sawmills and turpentine camps of Bluff Springs and McDavid. Bill McCoy was one of these residents and an employee of the Bradford Camp.

Different stories are offered as to the origin of the name Teaspoon. One of the most plausible explanations is that the river curved to form the shape of a teaspoon. Observation today finds the river far away, but there are signs that the course has changed through the years.

Pilgrim Lodge Baptist Church's meeting house may be the only remaining physical tie to old Teaspoon. In 1878 the church was originally organized as the Teaspoon Baptist Church . The facilities were remodeled in 1903. The new town of Century did away with the name Teaspoon, and the Church was renamed Pilgrim Lodge.
