Pineville Interesting Facts

*Below the former Dry Springs Holiness Church, which is located in the woods, is a spring of water which is still being used by hunters.

*Rural communities are known for their desire for close-knit family. Work ethics are instilled in children while they are very small, and this same work ethic is evident today in so many of Pineville's descendants. One such lady who believed in a sense of heritage, religion and a sense of purpose was Ardillar Flowers, who was mother to 12 children in Pineville.

*A short distance north of the George melton homesite in the Pineville community is a trap site for wolves. The place is overgrown with underbrush and briars, but accessible. During the earlier days in the Pineville community, the early settlers devised a method for controlling the wolf population. This was the American red wolf, now one of the most endangered species in the United States. A small tree was located in a clear area. A circular pit was dug around the tree, to a depth of six to seven feet. The outer wall of the pit was kept vertical, if not slightly undercut, while the inner portion, containing the tree, was configured like an upside-down cone. The bait was a chunk of meat hung on a limb of the tree. The wolves would smell/see the bait, leap to this small, conical shaped island, and slide down into the pit. Once there, they were unable to jump or climb out and could easily be destroyed.

As it turns out, Pineville really isn't just a small town. It too has its share of stars. Take Mr. Luther Eugene "Buck Buck" Buckley for example. Before he was a resident of Mobile, AL, he lived in the sleepy town of Pineville, FL. What makes him so special you might ask? He was a veteran of the US Army and served in World War II. He was then the recipient of the Purple Heart, a highly coveted award in the military. As if that was not enough, he was also a 33rd Degree Mason. Unfortunately, Mr. Buckley died at the age of 87 on March 31, 2000. As much as people may overlook this small town, it definitely does its share in raising good people for our country.
