McDavid Station

Return to the McDavid Home Page

"Water was piped to this station from Chumuckla Springs for shipment to various cities. This was a common practice, and several area springs shipped water. Lumber and timbers from McDavid's sawmills were shipped from here, and passengers bound for the resort at Mystic Springs also used this station. Milner Lumber Company operated one of the several sawmills in the McDavid area.

Sawmills weren't the only mills. "Claude Welch set about a dam Mitchell Creek and built a gristmill. The project, as big as it was, was never seriously intended to be a commercial venture, rather it was done for the sake of doing it. Unfortunately, a flood breached the dam, and that was the end of Welch's Mill. We are told he was quite a handy fellow and often undertook large projects. His family was one of the first in the area to have running water and electricity."(A Pictorial History).
