There are many speculations about how the Century High School Blackcats became the blackcats. One rumor is that when Century colors were still red and gray on the night of the final game between Flomaton and Century, a blackcat ran across the football field during halftime. Century won that game and ever since then they have been known as the Century Blackcats.

Century High closed down in 1994 when it combined with Ernest Ward High School to form Northview High. The old Century High School is now being used as Carver Middle School.
