Jay Beats NHS; Royals And Chiefs Tied In District

Northview and Jay are now tied for number one spot in District 1-2A after the Royals defeated the Chiefs 12-10 Thursday night in Jay.
Jay started the sixth inning with a 12-6 lead, but the Chiefs rallied with four to close gap to 12-10. But the Chiefs were held scoreless in the seventh by Jay.
Dabney Langhorne was 2-4 for the Chiefs with two doubles; Brandon Sheets and Austin Lowery were both 1-4; and Hunter Black was 3-4 with a double.
For the Royals, Rush Hendricks was 1-2, Kevin Stanton was 1-3 and Dakota Smith was 2-2 with two RBIs.

Jay Track Star Breaks Longtime School Record

Jay High Track Star Robin Blackman has broken a long-held school record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 61.75 seconds.
Blackman competes in four events, the long jump, the 4×800 meter relay, the 400 meter dash and the 4×400 meter relay. She placed first in all four events and helped to lead the Lady Royals to a first place victory in the 36th Annual Quarterback Club Invitational held at Jay High School recently.
Blackman is a junior and has advanced to state each year since seventh grade. She is the top scorer for the Royals and plans to run at Troy University.

Reid Homers As Northview Beats The Baker Gators 17-0

The Northview Chiefs shut out the Baker Gators in four Tuesday, 17-0, for a big District 1-2A win. The Chiefs are now 16-6, 8-1 in the district.
The Chiefs held a 6-0 lead at the end of the first, and they were just getting warmed up. Northview dominated the second inning to widen their lead to 16-0. Northview added another in the third. The fourth inning was scoreless as the mercy rule gave Northview the win.
“We put a good emphasis on our offense and hitting the baseball; and it’s good to come out here and see us reap some rewards from what we have been concentrating on,” said Head Coach Sid Wheatley. “It was good to see these guys swing the bats, score the runs — it was just good baseball.”
Senior Austin Reid was 3-4 Tuesday night, with five runs, a double, two runs and an over-the-fence home run.
Reid picked up the win for the Chiefs on the mound, improving his record to 6-2.
Brandon Sheets went 1-3, with one RBI and one double; Brad Lowery was 1-2 with three runs; Dabney Langhorne was 2-3 with 2 RBIs, Austin Arrington was 1-1 with two runs; Austin Llowery was 1-3 with a double and a RBI; Heath Burkett was 1-1 with two runs; Hunter Black went 1-2 with 2 RBIs; and Tyler Brooks was 1-1 for the Chiefs.
The Chiefs will be on the road Thursday night against Jay, their final district game of the year.
“I know they are going to be ready for us,” Wheatley said Tuesday night. “We’ve got to come to work and continue to hit the baseball. This time of the year, especially leading up the district tournament and potential playoffs.”
Tuesday night was Senior Night for the Chiefs as they recognized senior players Austin Reid, Heath Burkett, Brad Lowery, Austin Lowery, Dakota Stuckey, Aaron Chancery and Shakel Holmes.

NHS JV Ends Winning Season, Beating Baker 8-2

The Northview High School junior varsity team wrapped up a winning season Monday afternoon with a win over Baker.
Northview beat the Gators 8-2, giving the JV Chiefs a 10-6 record for the year.
It was the second game of the year between the Chiefs and the Gators; the Chiefs won that first contest 8-0.
Members of the JV Chiefs are: Tanner Brooks, Logan Brown, Jamie Gafford, Tyler Hester, Chance Jackson, Ty Randolph, Reid Bell, Brandon Carnley, Justin Halteman, Harold Harrison, Trey Johnson, Hunter Rigby, Brian Sanders and Kevin Vaughan.
Lady Chiefs Keep On Winning, Beating West Florida 7-3 (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Lady Chiefs continued their winning ways Monday as they beat the West Florida Jaguars Monday in Bratt, 7-3 in seven innings. It was the eighth win in a row for Northview, and the 16th of the season for freshman pitcher Misty Doran.
Aimee Clarke was 3-4 for the Lady Chiefs. Emily Vickrey was 2-3 with three RBIs, Amber McMillan was 2-3 with a double, and Haley Simpson was 1-2.
Doran pitched all seven innings for the Lady Chiefs, striking out eleven Jaguars. Her record stands at 16-3 for the year.
Northview is now 21-3 overall, and 8-0 for the number one spot in District 1-2A. The final game of the regular season for the Lady Chiefs is a non-district matchup Thursday as they take on Pensacola High. Northview will then host the district softball tournament beginning April 19.
It was Senior Night for the Lady Chiefs, as they honored senior players Aimee Clarke, Kolbi Cobb, Candice Greenwell and Amber McMillan.

Lady Chiefs Take District 1-2A; Tate, Jay Girls Lose; Wins for JV Chiefs, Tate, Jay, Northview Boys

Northview 13 Baker 1
The Northview Lady Chiefs took the top spot in District 1-2A after a five-inning win over Baker 13-1. The Chiefs are a perfect 8-0 in the district, 20-3 overall.
Misty Doran earned the win for the Chiefs striking out nine in five innings. Doran also picked up a home run and a double for NHS.
Among those hitting for Northview were: Kolbi Cobb 3-4 with a double and Candace Greenwell 2-4 with two RBI’s.
The Chiefs will host the District 1-2A tournament beginning April 19.
West Florida 3 Jay 1
The West Florida Jaguars beat the Jay Royals 3-1.
Hitters for the Royals were Steadham 1-3, Calloway 1-2 and Driver 1-3.
Escambia 13 Tate 3
Escambia beat Tate 13-3 in Friday softball action. Hitters for Tate were Myers 2-2, Waters 1-3 and Paulson 2-2.

Northview 15 Escambia County 4
The Northview Chiefs defeated Escambia County High School 15-4 in five innings at Atmore Friday night.
Austin Arrington was the winning pitcher, giving up only four runs on six hits, while striking out nine.
The Chiefs were led by Branden Sheets who had two hits and scored four runs; Brad Lowery who had a double, and scored three runs; Dabney Langhorne who had two hits, with a double, one run, and five RBI’s; Austin Reid who had a double, scored two runs, and three RBI’s; Dakota Stuckey who had one hit and scored two runs; Austin Arrington who had one hit, scored one run, and two RBI’s; Taylor Martin who had a double, scored one run, and one RBI; Aaron Chancery who had one hit; Austin Lowery who had one hit and one RBI; Hunter Black who had one hit; and Josh Scott scored one run.
The Chiefs will be back in action on Tuesday night, April 13, vs. Baker, in a district game. JV plays at 4 p.m., and Varsity plays at 6 p.m. Senior Night activities will precede the varsity game.

The Northview High School JV Chiefs beat Escambia County High School Friday in five innings in Atmore.
The JV Chiefs were led by Tanner Brooks who went 2 for 4, with a double, and scored two runs; Logan Brown who went 2 for 3, with a double, and scored three runs; Chance Jackson who went 2 for 3 and scored two runs; Ty Randolph who went 2 for 2 and scored one1 run; Branden Carnley who went 1 for 2 and scored a run; Kevin Vaughn, Tyler Hester, and Jamie Gafford each scored one run.
The Chiefs were led on the mound by Hunter Rigby, who struck out 7 in three innings; Branden Carnley, who pitched one inning, and Harold Harrison, who pitched one inning.
The Chiefs only gave up one hit, and that hit was erased in a double play as the Chiefs faced 17 batters in five innings.
Tate 14 Escambia 0
Tate shut out Escambia Friday 14-0.
Tate hitters were Will Schreiber 2-3 with 2 RBI, Lee Hunter 2-4, Mack 2-3. Alex Stephens pitched seven for the Aggies, allowing three hits, and striking out a dozen.
Jay 5 Freeport 0
Jay shut out Freeport 5-0.
Zach Gavin picked up the win for the Royals pitching seven. Rush Hendricks was 2-4 with a home run. Other Jay hitters were Dakota Smith 1-4, Hunter Brown 1-3.
Jay Wins Track Meet; Northview Places Second, Third

Jay’s boys and girls won a recent seven-school track meet, while the Northview girls placed second and the Northview boys placed third.
The meet at Central High School included track teams from Century, Northview, Jay, Florala, W.S. Neal, Paxton and Pensacola Christian School.

Former Northview Coach Named New Escambia County High Head Coach

Former Northview High School offensive coordinator Mark Heaton has been named the new head football coach at Escambia County High School in Atmore.
Heaton’s appointment was unanimously approved Thursday afternoon by the Escambia County (Ala.) School Board after a short executive session. Heaton was one of seven candidates for the job interviewed by School Superintendent Billy Hines and Assistant Superintendent Randall Little. Escambia County High School Principal Harvey Means was left out of the selection process because his contract was non-renewed in March by the school board.
“I was excited that this opportunity presented itself,” Heaton told NorthEscambia.com. “God really opened the door wide open and kicked me through it. I hope we are going to be blessed and prosper.”
The new Blue Devils head coach believes he can return the program to glory. And he’s not aiming low, setting a goal of state championship, something Escambia County High School has not seen since 1983.
“There’s a lot of deep tradition at Escambia County,” he said. “This is a great time and a great opportunity to build on that tradition.”
Heaton admitted that he will miss J.U. Blacksher where he was 13-9, including a trip to the state playoffs.
“I’m going to miss a lot of those kids,” he said. “I am so proud of them and the program.” He spent early Thursday evening calling his J.U. Blacksher seniors to tell them about his decision to take the Escambia County job. He will meet with the entire team on Friday to announce that he’s leaving.
Heaton’s first day as the new Blue Devils head coach will be April 18.
Heaton is a 1997 graduate of Demopolis (Ala.) High School where he was a student teacher for one year. He then joined the coaching staff at Oglethorpe County High School in Crawford, Georgia under Cody Keene. Two years later, he would eventually follow Keene to Northview High School.
Heaton joined the Northview coaching staff as an offensive coordinator in 2004 under Keene. After four seasons with the Chiefs, Heaton was hired from a field of 28 as head coach at J.U. Blacksher in Uriah, Ala.
He is a 2001 graduate of the University of West Alabama where he played on scholarship as a quarterback and punter.
Heaton’s wife, Betty Heaton, will remain at Northview High School where she currently is the head volleyball coach and teaches reading. The couple lives in Atmore, and they have two preschool daughters, Jae and Payton.
Heaton replaces Kyle Davis at Escambia County High. Davis was fired with a 16-35 record over five seasons.
