Flomaton Hurricanes Play Up A Storm To Advance To Quarterfinals

The Flomaton Hurricanes played up a storm Friday night, crushing Goshen 51-7 to advance to the Class 2A quarterfinals next week.

Flomaton took the lead early when Neiko Robinson recovered a fumble for an 85-yard touchdown. With a good kick from Hunter Bonds, the Hurricanes were leading the second round playoff game 7-0. Moments later, Neino Robinson (Neiko’s brother) intercepted a Goshen pass and returned 52-yards it for a 14-0 Flomaton lead in the first quarter. Then, Neiko Robinson scored again a on a 3-yard dive. A missed kicked, the ‘Canes were up 20-0 with 2:46 to go in the first.

In the second, Flomaton added a 50-yard Robinson Brothers touchdown from Neiko. A missed attempt for two, and Flomaton was up 26-0 with 9:14 to go in the half.

The Canes opened the second half with a 65-yard touchdown run from Ryheem Dixon on the first play of the third quarter. A good point after, and Flomaton’s advantage was 33-0 over the Goshen Eagles. Then with 4:41 to go in the third, Neiko Robinson scored on an 8-yard touchdown run, 39-0. Dixon picked up a 33-yard touchdown run with 2:55 to go in the third, 45-0.

At 5:15 to go in the game, Goshen picked up a 72-yard touchdown, 45-7. Dixon scored another touchdown with an 88-yard kick off return, 51-7.

The Flomaton Hurricanes stand at 11-1 — a tie for the best-ever Flomaton season.

The Elba Tigers (12-0) will travel to Flomaton next Friday night at 7:00 for a Class 2A quarterfinal game — the second-ever trip to the quarterfinals for the Hurricanes.

Battle Of The Champs: 1A Northview Falls To 5A West Florida

In a battle between 1A and 5A district champions, the West Florida Jaguars beat the Northview Chiefs Thursday night in Pensacola, 33-20.

It was the regular season-ender for both teams — an especially historic night for the Jaguars as they finished at 9-1, the best record in the history of West Florida High School.

In the first quarter, west Florida scored first on a 16-yard  Kyle Faxlanger pass to Lawrence Lee. With a good kick from Luke Jackson, the Jags were up 7-0 with 8:03 remaining in the quarter. About three minutes later, Faxlanger struck again on an 18-yard pass to Jaylen Adams. Another Jackson kick through the uprights, and West Florida held a 14-0 advantage.

The Chiefs’ Roderick Woods was in from 6-yards out with 3:44 to go in the first quarter. With a good kick from Kevin Vaughan, Northview closed West Florida’s lead to 14-7. But West Florida answered quickly with a 28-yard pass to Abrams from Faxlanger. A good Jags kick, and West Florida was still on top, 21-7.

West Florida scored again in the second quarter with 78-yard touchdown from Lee after a pass from Faxlanger.

In the third, West Florida added thee on a 35-yard field goal from Jackson, and Northview’s La’Mikal Kyles score on and 11-yard run. And in the fourth quarter, Northview scored with a 4-yard run from Woods, and West Florida added another Jackson field goal from 25-yards out.

Both teams will begin the state playoff series at 7:30 p.m. on November 18 on their respective home fields. Northview will host Wewahitchka in the regional semifinals, and West Florida will host Tallahassee Godby. Home field advantage could remain throughout the playoffs for the Chiefs until the state championship game in Orlando.

Northview Volleyball, Cross Country, Golf Athletes Honored

Several Northview High students were honored during a recent Fellowship of Christian Athletes banquet for their participation in volleyball, cross country and golf.

Football Standings: Champions And 3-Way Ties

It’s the final week of the regular season in high school football, with district kings already named in two local districts, while one is in a three-way shootout Monday night.

The Northview Chiefs easily chomped the Baker Gators last Friday night to take the District 1-1A championship and claim home field advantage for the playoffs.

The District 1-5A title will come down to a three-way shootout Monday night between West Florida, Gulf Breeze and Arnold. The top two teams are playoff bound, while number three heads to the lockers for the last time. (For an update to this story, click here.)

The shootout will take place at 7 p.m. at West Florida’s home field at Woodham Middle School.

Pensacola High is on top of District 1-6A, while the Pace Patriots are in second. For the Tate Aggies, an 0-10 season ended Friday night.

Northview, West Fla. Compete In District Cross Country Meet

The District 1-2A cross county meet was held Saturday at Sims Middle School in Pace.

The Northview Chiefs finished in seventh place for both boys and girls — missing a trip to regionals. Northview’s Isaac McGahan (pictured) placed 10th overall with a time of 18:03, earning him an individual trip to the regional meet.

Lady Royals Take District Cross Country Meet

The Jay High Lady Royals won the District 1-1A Cross Country meet Saturday in Pace, with several runners moving forward to regionals.

Six of the Lady Royals placed in the top 13 runners that advanced to regionals:

  • Jessica Thornton 3rd
  • Jorja Agrait 4th
  • Allison Blair 6th
  • Savannah Brown 8th
  • Jenna Thornton 10th
  • Ally Settle 11th

The Lady Royals will run at the regional meet next weekend in Lake City. It has been nearly a decade since the Lady Royals won the district championship.

For the boys. Jay’s Micah Kemp advanced individually with a third place finish.

Northview Beats Baker To Claim District Championship (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Chiefs won the District 1-1A championship Friday night, knocking off the Baker Gators 34-0.

“It was awesome tonight; they really came ready to play,” Northview Head Coach Sid Wheatley said. “The first quarter was kind of a defensive struggle back and forth, and then we really go rolling.”

The Northview Chiefs took an early lead with 10:51 to go in the first on a 70-yard touchdown run from LaMikal Kyles and a good kick from Kevin Vaughan. Then, with 8:46 in the first, Montaio Mitchell was in on a 56-yard run to to increase Northview’s advantage to 14-0.

LaMikal Banks intercepted a Baker pass at their 10 and raced down to the five to setup a Mitchell touchdown and a 21-0 lead. But the Chiefs were to add to the scoreboard once more in the half; this time on a 10-yard run on a quarterback keeper from senior Brandon Sheets to make it 28-0.

In the third quarter, Austin Albritton scored on a 10-yard pass from Sheets. With a missed kick, that ended the night’s scoring at 34-0.

The Northview Chiefs (6-2, 3-0) will travel south next Thursday night to take on the West Florida Jaguars.

Then it’s time for round one of the state playoffs with Northview set to play at home in Bratt.

Tate Ends Season With Close Loss To Washington (With Photo Gallery)

Tate finished out their 2011 season on a losing note, but not without giving it their all against the Washington Wildcats Friday night. In the end, the Wildcats beat the Aggies 40-32 in Pensacola.

Tate’s first score of the night came on a 29-yard field goal from Hagen Mancuson with 4:55 in the first quarter. Steven Fortner added a touchdown on 9-yard run in the second, followed by a good kick by Mancuso.

The third saw Tate score twice — Tanner Robinson on a 5-yard pass from Jalen Cunningham and  Calieb Norris on a 66-yard pass from David Moorhead.

Tate also scored in the fourth quarter with a 45-yard TD run from Lavantai Samuel.

The Aggies finished the season at 0-10.

Flomaton Gets Big Playoff Win Over Billingsley

Flomaton’s Ryheem Dixon had five touchdowns Friday night as No. 6 Flomaton easily beat Billingsley 53-16  in round one of the Alabama 2A playoffs.

Dixon had a 24-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Bonds, a 6-yard touchdown run, a 36-yard touchdown pass to Neiko Robinson, a 70-yard touchdown pass to Robinson  and returned a kickoff 85 yards for a TD.

Dustin Postlewait added a 2-yard touchdown run and a 64-yard interception run return by Robinson.

Flomaton (10-1) will visit Goshen in the second round of playoffs at 7:00 next Friday night.
