Wahoos’ Daniel Corcino Named Southern League Pitcher Of Week

June 21, 2012

After working the first eight innings of the Blue Wahoos first no-hitter in team history, Daniel Corcino has garnered Southern League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending June 17.

Corcino earns the recognition after pitching the first eight innings of the Blue Wahoos combined no-hitter against the Mobile BayBears on Saturday, June 16 at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. He added nine strikeouts to the no-hit bid as well. In addition to the solid outing on the mound, he also collected a third inning single.

The Wahoos right-hander is currently ranked my MLB.com as baseball’s No. 98 prospect. He is in his first season at Double-A after making the jump directly from Single-A Dayton where he spent the entire 2011 season. Corcino was signed by the Cincinnati Reds out of the Dominican Republic in 2008. He is the second Blue Wahoos player to earn league recognition this season.

Mobile Baybears Beat Pensacola Blue Wahoos 10-0

June 18, 2012

Five Mobile pitchers combined to yield just three hits to Pensacola, while all but one of the eight position players in the lineup recorded a hit in the BayBears’ 10-0 win over the Blue Wahoos in front of another sellout crowd of 5,038 on Sunday afternoon at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

Despite the loss, the Fish had already clinched a series win with their 6-0 no-hit win on Saturday evening, topping Mobile 3-2 in the five-game series. The defeat dropped Pensacola’s record in 2012 to 34-35, while the victory moved the BayBears’ mark to 40-30 to end the first half of the season. The capacity crowd was the 23rd of the season to take in a game at the bayfront stadium.

Four Mobile hitters, including C Rossmel Perez (3-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI), CF Evan Frey (2-3, 2 R, 2 BB), LF Marc Krauss (2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) and SS Wladimir Sutil (2-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB) all recorded multi-hit efforts for the BayBears, with seven of the first eight hitters in the lineup collecting a base knock.

Mobile started the scoring in the second thanks to Sutil’s RBI double, while the BayBears then sent in a total of seven runs over the next three frames. Krauss drove home a run in the third with an RBI single and then took advantage of a Blue Wahoos fielding miscue to bring home an additional run.

Sutil then tallied his second RBI double in as many at bats in the fourth before Mobile took advantage of a Pensacola error for their second score of the frame. The BayBears then brought across three more in the subsequent inning thanks in part to run-scoring two-baggers by RF Alfredo Marte and Perez to make it 8-0. Mobile then sent in two more insurance runs in the eighth with a two-run shot by 2B David Nick, his second of the year.

Five BayBears pitchers, including starter Chase Anderson (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 SO), along with relievers Derek Eitel (4.0 IP, 3 SO), Eury De La Rosa (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO), Matt Gorgen (1.0 IP, 2 SO) and Kevin Munson (1.0 IP), combined to give up just three Blue Wahoos hits, as well as no walks. Eitel earned the victory to improve to 6-4 this season while Pensacola starter Kyle Lotzkar (4.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) suffered the loss to fall to 3-2 on the year.

With the first half concluded, five Blue Wahoos players will head to Kodak, Tennessee, for the 2012 Southern League All-Star Game, with starting pitchers Daniel Corcino and J.C. Sulbaran, along with infielder Didi Gregorius and outfielders Ryan LaMarre and Josh Fellhauer to be honored on June 19 at Smokies Park. LaMarre is scheduled to start at center field and leadoff for the South Division, while Gregorius is slated to hit ninth and play shortstop.

Pensacola will travel to Chattanooga to begin the second half, while the next homestand begins on Tuesday June 26, with a five-game series scheduled with the Jackson Generals.

Pensacola Beats BayBears 6-0 In Wahoos’ First No Hitter

June 17, 2012

Pensacola Blue Wahoos starting pitcher Daniel Corcino and reliever Wilkin De La Rosa combined to toss the first no hitter in team history, with Corcino going the first eight frames while De La Rosa pitched the ninth in a 6-0 victory over the Mobile BayBears in front of another sellout crowd of 5,038 on Saturday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

The victory improves the Fish’s record to an even 33-33 mark this season, while the defeat dropped Mobile to a 39-30 record in 2012. The no-no came a year to the date Montgomery Biscuits LHP Matt Moore held the BayBears hitless. The sellout crowd was the 22nd Pensacola has hosted this year at the bayfront stadium.

Corcino (8.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 9 SO) in his eight frames yielded just three walks while striking out nine, including five of the final six batters he faced. The right-hander threw 110 pitches, 68 of which were for strikes, and also induced nine groundouts and six flyouts. The win improves Corcino’s record to 3-4 this year. Mobile starter David Holmberg (5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) suffered the loss to fall to 0-1 in 2012 after allowing just a lone earned run on six hits in his five frames.

De La Rosa (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 3 SO) came on in the ninth to finish off the BayBears, and struck out the side in addition to walking one, retiring the final batter LF Marc Krauss on a called third strike to cue the celebration near the mound. The two closest moments for a BayBears hit were in the second and fifth frames. Krauss tapped a soft grounder to the right side of the infield in the third, with Corcino racing off the mound to throw out Kruass, while Blue Wahoos 3B David Vidal barehanded a slow ground ball in the fifth and set down RF Alfredo Marte.

Both teams were held quiet on the scoreboard until the fifth, when Pensacola struck with their first score. SS Didi Gregorius laced a triple down the right field line before he was brought in on a clutch two run-scoring single to right by 1B Joel Guzman to give the Fish all they would need.

Vidal launched his first home run at the Double-A level over the left field wall in the seventh, a two-run blast, to push Pensacola ahead 3-0, while pinch hitter Josh Fellhauer singled home RF Andrew Means in the eighth to move the lead to 4-0. The Fish would then take advantage of a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch to complete the scoring in the frame.

Gregorius (2-4, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 BB) and LF P.J. Phillips (2-5) each collected multi-hit efforts for Pensacola in the victory, while Corcino helped his own cause in the third, recording a base knock to left field.

After clinching the five-game series with the win, Pensacola and Mobile will face off again on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch set for 2:00 pm. The Blue Wahoos are scheduled to send RHP Kyle Lotzkar to the hill, while the BayBears are expected to counter with RHP Chase Anderson.

Blue Wahoos Split Twin Bill With Mobile

June 16, 2012

The Blue Wahoos split their double header against the BayBears, with Mobile winning the resumption of last night’s suspended game 4-1, while Pensacola defeated the BayBears 3-2 in the second game, in front of sellout crowds of 5,038 on Friday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

The Fish have now won six of their last seven contests and own a 33-34 record this year, while Mobile moved their 2012 mark to 39-29. Their victory, combined with a Montgomery Biscuit loss to the Huntsville Stars tonight clinched a first half title in the South Division of the Southern League. The two capacity crowds now raises Pensacola’s total to 21 sellout crowds this year, with the Blue Wahoos continuing to lead the league in attendance.

After both clubs combined for four home runs last night, including three straight from Mobile RF Marc Krauss, C Ed Easley and 1B Yazy Arbelo, as well as a solo shot by 1B Joel Guzman before inclement weather suspended the game, the BayBears plated an additional insurance run in the ninth after the game resumed Friday night. Easley began the ninth with a single and advanced to third on a base knock, before scoring on a sacrifice fly to center by SS Wladimir Sutil.

Mobile reliever Bryan Woodall (2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB) earned the win after giving up just two hits in 2.1 scoreless innings of work, while Blue Wahoos starter Tony Cingrani (5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 SO) suffered the loss to fall to 1-1 after yielding three earned runs on four hits while fanning six in five frames. BayBears closer Evan Marshall (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) pitched a shutout final frame to notch his 14th save of the year.

Arbelo (3-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI) led all batters with three hits for the BayBears, while Easley (2-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI) tallied a multi-hit effort. 2B Brodie Greene (2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB) was the lone Pensacola batter to record two hits in the first contest.

The Blue Wahoos struck first in the second half of the twin bill, scoring two in the second. Following a leadoff double by 1B Joel Guzman, 3B David Vidal was hit by a pitch, with both moving an additional thanks to a sacrifice bunt, before Guzman was sent in with a sacrifice fly by C Mark Fleury. Vidal would subsequently score on an RBI single by starting pitcher J.C. Sulbaran with the first of his two hits in the game.

The advantage grew to 3-0 in the following frame after 2B Brodie Greene doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch before he was brought home on another Blue Wahoos sacrifice fly, this one to right off the bat of Vidal.

Mobile did not go down quietly however, scoring two runs in the sixth. RF Marc Krauss drew a free pass, while 3B Matt Davidson singled and Arbelo was plunked to load the bases for LF Dan Kavzrowski, who drove home Krauss and Davidson with a single to left. The BayBears threatened for more, but the Fish were able to induce an inning-ending double play to hold on to their lead.

Sulbaran (5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO) earned the win to improve to 5-4 this year after allowing just two runs, one of which was earned, on three hits in 5.1 frames, while reliever Curtis Partch (1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) notched his second save after firing the final 1.2 innings. Mobile starter Brett Lorin (4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on six hits in 4.2 frames.

Guzman (2-2, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB) collected a pair of base hits in the second contest to lead Pensacola, while Davidson (2-3, 1 R) tallied two base knocks for the BayBears as the only players to record a multi-hit contest.

The Blue Wahoos and BayBears will square off again Saturday night at the bayfront stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 pm. Pensacola is expected to give the ball to RHP Daniel Corcino, while LHP David Holmberg is slated to get the nod for Mobile.

Wahoos Walk With 4-3 Win

June 14, 2012

Blue Wahoos catcher Mark Fleury laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to score right fielder Josh Fellhauer from third in the bottom of the 11th to give Pensacola a 4-3 walk off victory over the Mobile BayBears on Wednesday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

The win gives the Fish a team-high fifth straight victory to improve Pensacola’s record to 32-33 in 2012, while the defeat drops Mobile to a 38-28 record this year. Before the game, Oakland Athletics first round draft pick and Pace High School grad Addison Russell was honored and threw out a ceremonial first pitch.

After Fellhauer was hit by a pitch to begin the 11th frame, CF Andrew Means drew a free pass and LF Yordanys Perez was intentionally walked to set the stage for Fleury with one out. The Blue Wahoos backstop then put down a bunt to the third base side as Fellhauer charged home and scored without a play to cue the celebration.

Pensacola also started the game’s scoring in the opening frame with a single tally, marking the sixth time in eight contests the club has scored in the first inning. CF Ryan LaMarre led off with a single and was brought home from first when SS Didi Gregorius doubled to right center to put the Blue Wahoos ahead 1-0.

Mobile however, would counter in the fifth with two scores of their own to take their first lead of the game at 2-1. LF Dan Kaczrowski started the rally with a single, moved to second on SS Wladimir Sutil’s walk and then third on a fielder’s choice, before coming plateward on a sacrifice fly off the bat of CF Evan Frey. Sutil subsequently scored on 2B David Nick’s run-scoring double to push the BayBears in front.

The Blue Wahoos then answered right back to draw the game even at 2-2 in the bottom half of the frame by playing small ball. Fleury began the inning with a double and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before being sent home on LaMarre’s sacrifice fly to center.

Mobile then grabbed back the lead in the seventh courtesy of a solo shot from 3B Matt Davidson, which was his Southern League leading 15thh of the year, while the Fish tied it up in the next inning. Following a lead off double from Gregorius, and a sacrifice bunt to move him to third, RF Josh Fellhauer delivered with an RBI single to right to once again even the margin.

Fleury (3-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI) recorded three hits in the game to lead Pensacola, while Gregorius (2-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB) and 3B David Vidal (2-5, 1 2B) each collected a pair of base knocks. Kaczrowski (3-5, 1 R, 1 BB) paced the BayBears with his three base hits, while Davidson (2-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB) and C Rossmel Perez (2-5, 1 2B) also notched multi-hit efforts.

Seven different Pensacola relievers held Mobile to just four hits and a run in their 6.2 innings of work in support of starter Tim Crabbe (4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO), with RHP Curtis Partch (1.0 IP) earning his third win of the year, while Mobile LHP Eury De La Rosa (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB) suffered the loss after allowing the final run. BayBears starter Gaby Hernandez (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) did not receive a decision despite yielding just two earned runs on six hits in six frames.

The Blue Wahoos and BayBears will square again Thursday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. LHP Tony Cingrani, the Reds’ No. 15 prospect according to Baseball America is slated to take the hill for the Fish, while Mobile is expected to counter with LHP Tyler Skaggs, who was tabbed as the third-best prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ system, and the 14th best prospect overall before the season.
