Tommy Weaver Memorial Stadium To Be Dedicated At Northview Oct. 2

September 24, 2014

The football stadium at Northview High School will be formally dedicated as the Tommy Weaver Memorial Stadium during a special ceremony at 6 p.m. on October 2. The dedication will include the unveiling of a Tommy Weaver Memorial Stadium sign and a Chief statue with plaques donated by the Northview classes of 2013 and 2014.

The Escambia County School Board voted in May to rename the stadium.

Tommy Weaver was a longtime DCT and Ag instructor and assistant coach who passed away suddenly at the age of 61 in March 2012. The Chiefs’ entire 2012 state championship football season was dedicated to Weaver.

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony.

FWC: Floridians Hunting Deer Out Of State Need To Know CWD Laws

September 22, 2014

Florida hunters planning to hunt deer, moose or elk out of state this year need to be aware of certain laws and regulations aimed at preventing chronic wasting disease (CWD) from entering the state, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

CWD is a contagious neurological disease that has been found in captive and wild cervids (white-tailed deer, mule deer, moose and elk) within 22 states, two Canadian provinces and in South Korea. The disease causes degeneration of the brains of infected animals, resulting in emaciation, abnormal behavior, loss of bodily functions and death. There is no known evidence that CWD can be transmitted to livestock or humans.

The disease has been detected in New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Michigan, Virginia, Missouri, North Dakota, Maryland, Texas, Alberta and Saskatchewan Canadian provinces, and in South Korea.

Hunters need to know that it is against the law to bring into Florida whole carcasses of any deer from any of the above-listed areas. The purpose of this measure is to prevent CWD from being brought into the state. The infective agent is more likely to be concentrated within the brain, eyes, spinal cord, lymph nodes, tonsils and spleen of the animal. This infective agent, called a prion, can be accidentally deposited into the environment, where it can remain for years and can infect other deer. Many states have a prohibition in place that is similar to Florida’s.

It is not illegal to bring into Florida deboned meat and finished taxidermy mounts, tanned hides, cleaned skulls, antlers and teeth from any of these places, as long as all soft tissue has been removed.

Northview Rolls Over Chipley (With Photo Gallery)

September 13, 2014

The Northview Chiefs rolled over the Chipley Tigers Friday night in Bratt, 24-6.

The Chiefs lit up the scoreboard first with a 17-yard pass from quarterback Gavin Grant to Jacob Weaver. A missed kick, and Northview was up 6-0. Senior Keondrae Lett scored three touchdowns for the Chiefs, the first  from a couple of yards out just a couple of minutes before the half, the second on a 75-yard run with 5:00 in the third quarter, and the final seal the deal TD early in the fourth.  Lett’s third quarter touchdown was set up by a Nick Lambert interception at Northview’s 15 and a return to Chipley’s 33.

Overall, Lett was close to 240 yards on the night.

“I thought our offensive line did a good job tonight,” Northview Coach Sid Wheatley said after the win. “I thought our running backs ran the ball extremely well.”

Chipley’s only score of the night came a lateral when Northview appeared to think the ball was dead.

“Our defense stepped up big. We game them one touchdown in the first half kind of on a flukish play when we thought we had him stopped. We gave up no points in the second half, and that was huge,” he said.

Friday night might not be the only meeting of the year between Chipley and Northview. Both are in different districts in Class 1A and could feasibly meet again in regional play in late November.

The Chiefs (3-0) will be off next Friday night and travel to Fort Walton Beach to play Choctaw on September 26.

During the two weeks downtime, Wheatley said the team will work “fine tune little things”. “We are not where we need to be, but we are doing enough, and we know we can do better.”
