UWF Defeats FIT, 23-21, On Unbelievable Final Sequence

UWF place kicker Austin Williams tweeted earlier in the week about how his desire to kick a game-winning field goal for the first time in his career. On Saturday night he got his wish.
In the most bizarre and fortunate ending in UWF’s brief 15-game history, the Argonauts were the beneficiary of an intentional grounding penalty on fourth down with time having appeared to have expired, only to gain possession on downs with one tic left and have Williams kick the game-winning 44-yard field goal as time expired for an amazing, 23-21, win at Panther Stadium in Saturday night.
UWF (3-1, 1-1 Gulf South) finished with 314 yards and got timely stops on defense numerous times in the second half, which played a big part in the Argonauts retaining the Coastal Classic trophy for the second-consecutive year. The trophy started last season as an added bonus to the rivalry between the only Division II football playing schools in the state of Florida. UWF upset then 16th-ranked FIT last year, 42-39, in Pensacola.
This year UWF had to overcome a strong effort from Florida Tech’s Antwaun Haynes, who finished with 170 yards on 31 carries. His 1-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter put the Panthers ahead 20-13.
But the Argonauts responded on the next possession with a 15-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a Chris Schwarz touchdown from a yard out to pull the visitors to within 21-20. Schwarz had 16 carries for a career-high 76 yards as UWF finished with 115 on the ground.
The teams traded punts on the next six possessions after Schwarz’s run before the turnover on downs.
FIT opened the scoring in the first quarter when backup quarterback Trent Chmelik found Corey Lane on a out route for a 14-yard touchdown. UWF used the longest play of the night 50 seconds later when Mike Beaudry connected with Ka’Ron Ashley for 76 yards down the right sideline to tie the game at 7-7. Ashley ended the game with three receptions for 94 yards – both career-highs for the redshirt freshman.
On the ensuing possession Chmelik called his own number from three yards out for a 14-7 edge. Williams made two field goals – including one with 34 seconds left in the half – to pull the Argos within 14-13 at the intermission.
Williams logged three field goals, including a school-record long with the 43-yarder in the first half and the game-winner from 44 yards at the end of the night. The sophomore transfer also put four of his five kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. He is now 8-of-9 on the year – and a perfect 3-for-3 from 40-yards or more – with a team-high 35 points.
Josh Marshall made a career-high 13 tackles on defense, while Josh Smiley added 11 stops, one for loss and a pass break-up.
FIT (3-2, 2-1) outgained UWF, 380-314, with the sizeable edge on the ground with a 253-115 margin.
Tate Gets District Win Over Washington (With Photo Gallery)

The Tate High School Aggies beat the Washington Wildcats for the sixth straight time Friday night at Pete Gindl Stadium in Cantonment. With the 35-17 win, the Aggies improved to 4-0 overall, 1-0 in District 1-6A.
Junior quarterback Hunter Riggan put the Aggies on the board late in the first quarter from less than a yard out, and Tate was up 7-0 with 1:48 on the clock.
Washington would strike back from about their own 20 yard line just inside the first quarter, 7-7. The Aggies scored again with 7:17 to go in the second quarter. Riggan found senior Alex Young for a touchdown, 14-7 the Aggies back on top.
Washington managed a field goal to wrap up the first half scoring, Tate on top 14-10 headed to the lockers.
Tate increased their lead to 21-10 with 3:59 to go in the third on a pass from Riggan to Patrick Palmer just inside the end zone.
Washington scored with 10:29 to go in the ballgame, 21-17.
Shemari Jones scored another Aggie touchdown with 5:51 in the fourth, and the Aggies added one more TD just over a minute to go for the final 35-17.
Tate sits out next week with an open date before facing Escambia at October 13. The Aggies and the Gators are tied for the top spot in District 1-6A, both at 1-0.

Freeport Rolls Past Northview (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Chiefs dropped their fifth straight Friday night in Bratt, losing 48-19 at Tommy Weaver Memorial Stadium.
“We ran the ball wonderfully, but we got behind,” Northview head coach Dereck Marshman said. “We got behind on the scoreboard and had to start throwing the football a little more.”
Freeport jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a long 95-yard touchdown with 4:47 to go in the first quarter.
The hometown Chiefs answered with a Trent Peebles touchdown at 9:51 in the second, 7-7 under the Friday night lights in Bratt.
With 7:05 before the half, Freeport was back on top 14-0 and jumped up 21-7 with 2:41 on the clock.
Freshman Jayden Jackson was in for a touchdown from about 35-yards out, recovering from a bad snap. The Chiefs were down 21-13 with 1:06 to go in the half.
“We didn’t play a really good first half,” Marshman said. “I know the score didn’t indicate it, but we made a lot of mistakes and left a lot of points out there. We made a lot of mistakes, even though we played with a lot of energy.”
Peebles would score again for the Chiefs late in the third.
“In the second half, those same mistakes came back to bite us. Both teams were real sloppy in the first half. We continued to play sloppy in the second half, and they continued to do what they needed to do,” he said.
Next week, the Chiefs will travel across the Escambia River to take on the Jay Royals on their home turf.
“Jay is always a big rivalry game, it’s going to be a challenge to get these guys up and ready to play. They just played their hearts and soul out and ended up a little short,” Marshman said. “It is Jay and a big rivalry game. Just the name itself with get the guys up sometimes.
The Northview Chiefs (1-5) and Jay (1-4) will face off at 7 p.m. next Friday.

FWC Seeks Comment On Proposed Hunting Rule Changes

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is seeking public input on drafted rule changes regarding hunting and FWD-managed lands that would begin with the 2018 hunting seasons.
Proposed Northwest Region changes include:
Blackwater WMA, Carr Unit – discontinue the special-opportunity released quail season and permit requirements; and allow northern bobwhite to be released and taken by shotgun during the small game season. A daily no-cost permit and proof that northern bobwhite were purchased within the past 90 days from a game farm licensed by the Commission or another state would be required for each individual or group participating.
Blackwater WMA, Hutton Unit – shift the 4 existing November quail hunts to February; and expand dove hunting from 4 to 8 days by adding 4 additional days of dove hunts during the second phase of the statewide dove season.
Escambia River WMA – allow raccoon hunting year-round in the still and dog hunt areas, except during the youth turkey hunt and spring turkey season; and limit camping to 14 days within any consecutive 30-day period.
Perdido River WMA – expand small game season from 30 to 68 days; and limit camping to 14 days within any consecutive 30-day period.

Tate Gets Homecoming Win Over Milton
September 23, 2017
It was very happy Aggie homecoming Friday night in Cantonment as the Tate Aggies powered past the Milton Panthers 28-6.
Tate was first on the board with 6:28 to go in the first period at Pete Gindl Stadium on a quarterback keeper from Hunter Rigdon from six yards out, 7-0 Aggies.
With 4:22 to go in the second quarter, junior shemRiggan found Patrick Palmer on a 27-yard touchdown pass, 14-0. The Aggies repeated their Riggan to Palmer combination with 15.9 seconds in the half for another touchdown pass, this one 14 yards, to go ahead 21-0.
Rigdon gained over 60 yards on a keeper before senior Shemari Jones was in to seal another Tate touchdown, 28-6, with 9:08 in the third.
The Milton Panthers scored late in the third on a short pass. With a missed point after attempt, the score was 28-6 headed into a scoreless fourth quarter in Cantonment.
The Panthers fell to 2-2, while the Tate Aggies are 3-1 on the season.
Next week, Washington will visit the Tate Aggies at 7 p.m.
During Friday night’s game, Logan Hamlin was named homecoming queen.
