Two In A Row: Wahoos Best Braves 8-4

April 18, 2018

For the second straight night the Blue Wahoos put up a crooked number in the first inning and score eight runs on the night. Pensacola scored five runs in the first on the way to an 8-4 win over the Mississippi Braves on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss.

The Blue Wahoos took advantage of a costly first inning error by the shortstop Luis Valenzuela on a groundball by Shed Long to start the inning. Four hits and five runs later, Luiz Gohara (L, 0-1) was out of the inning. Gohara got the start as his first appearance of the season on a Major League rehab assignment after getting injured early in Spring Training for the Braves.

Gohara pitched well after that, exiting the game after allowing the five runs, only one earned, over 3.1 innings. The Braves top pitching prospect struck out four and walked three in the losing effort.

Keury Mella (W, 2-0) was brilliant on the mound for the Blue Wahoos. He surrendered one unearned run in the first inning, one of two runs the Braves scattered against him over his six innings. He finished with a season-high seven strikeouts with three walks and five hits allowed in his second win of the season.

At the plate, Josh VanMeter maintained his excellence. He finished 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. He also walked twice more after drawing four free passes in Monday’s series opener. He’s 3-for-3 in the series and has reached safely in nine of his 10 trips to the plate. His only out was a first inning sacrifice fly to the right fielder.

Gabriel Guerrero stayed hot at the plate with a 2-for-5 game. He hit his sixth double of the season and scored twice with another RBI. Taylor Sparks and Luis Gonzalez each collected two hits in the Wahoos win. Sparks is now 4-for-9 in the first two games of the series. Scott Schebler was held hitless in four at bats in his second start in right field for Blue Wahoos as part of his rehab assignment.

The M-Braves loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with one out but Alex Powers (S, 1) shut the door on the threat with a strikeout and a flyout to centerfield to earn the save and secure the win.

Blue Wahoos Take Opener Over The Braves 8-3

April 17, 2018

The Blue Wahoos broke out their bats in the series opener with the Mississippi Braves pounding out eight extra-base hits in an 8-3 win. The victory snapped the Wahoos three game skid.

Gabriel Guerrero paced the offense with a four-hit game including three doubles. Gavin LaValley kick started the offense with a three-run homer in the first inning. It was one of two hits he had on the night. The Blue Wahoos plated four runs in the frame to open the game. It would be the first of two four-run innings on the night.

All of the first inning damage came against Braves number four prospect Kyle Wright (L, 0-2). It was his only inning of the game, which lead to his second loss of the season.

The second rally came in the eighth. Aristides Aquino led off the frame with a double and he scored a batter later on a Guerrero double. The Wahoos loaded the bases before Taylor Sparks singled home two more. Nick Longhi plated the final run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

The pitching also excelled for the Wahoos. Daniel Wright (W, 2-1) earned the win after going six strong innings. He allowed just one earned run (two total) with a walk and five strikeouts. Kevin Shackelford continued his rehab assignment with a scoreless inning and Carlos Navas finished the final two innings allowing just a late run in the ninth.

Scott Schebler doubled in his first at bat of the night, and finished the game 1-for-3 in his first game with the Blue Wahoos during his rehab assignment.

The Blue Wahoos and the M-Braves will continue the series Tuesday night. Keury Mella (1-0, 0.82) will start for the Blue Wahoos against RHP Touki Toussaint (0-1, 5.87) of the Braves.

Wahoos Drop Third Straight

April 16, 2018

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos lost5-4  to Chattanooga Sunday.

For the third straight game the Blue Wahoos had a late-game threat, and for the third straight game, they came up empty.

The Blue Wahoos played catchup for a majority of Sunday’s finale and left the tying run in scoring position in the ninth to lose their second-straight series to open the season.

Wyatt Strahan (L, 1-1) was roughed up in his second start and Lookouts starter Kohl Stewart (W, 2-0) briefly flirted with a perfect game.

In Sunday’s matinee, Chattanooga scored first for the first time in the series by cashing in on an error by Gavin LaValley combined with an RBI-single by T.J. White.

White wasn’t done there, because when he came to the plate in the third inning with a man out, he crushed his second homer of the year to make it 3-0. White finished the game with three of Chattanooga’s five RBIs. Zander Wiel also had a big day at the plate going 3-for-4 and getting hit by a Strahan pitch.

Meanwhile, Stewart was tremendous to open the game for the Lookouts. He retired the first 13 Blue Wahoos he faced before Josh VanMeter walked for the Wahoos’ first baserunner. Aristides Aquino ended the no-hitter bid on the next pitch when he roped a double into left to put to men in scoring position. The Wahoos would only settle for one run in the fifth thanks to Brian O’Grady’s RBI groundout.

Pensacola rallied for two more in the sixth when Nick Longhi homered off Stewart to score Shed Long and make it a one-run game. Again, the Wahoos had the tying run in scoring position but stranded him there when Aquino ended the inning with a flyout.

Ryan Walker’s eighth-inning home run proved to be a massive insurance run because in the bottom of the eighth, Long and Longhi opened the frame with singles and then advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. LaValley hit a sac fly to make it 5-4 and Longhi was at third base with only one out in the inning; however, Gabby Guerrero and VanMeter were both retired to end the threat.

The Wahoos made one final push in the ninth when Aquino led off the inning of the ninth with a double, but Harper retired O’Grady and Garrett Boulware before Williams Ramirez (S, 2) struck out pinch-hitter CJ McElroy for his second save of the year.

Wahoos Fall Short

April 14, 2018

A late rally fell short as the Pensacola Blue Wahoos lost 3-2 Friday night.

After a promising start to the game, the Blue Wahoos offense never quite found its rhythm. The Wahoos collected three hits in the first inning but didn’t get another hit until the sixth.

Randy LeBlanc took the mound for the Lookouts and struggled the find the strike zone right out of the gates. With two outs in the first, Gavin LaValley doubled to right before Gabby Guerrero and Josh VanMeter both drew walks. Aristides Aquino then ripped a single into to left to bring home LaValley, but the Wahoos tried to sneak another run home, but Chris Paul fired a strong throw home to the plate to throw out Guerrero.

Pensacola left the inning feeling cheated they only scored once.

For the Blue Wahoos, Vladimir Gutierrez made his first home start for the Wahoos and once again showed moments of brilliance despite pocketing the loss. A week after allowing a career high in walks, the 23-year old Cuban issued no free passes to the Lookouts over his six innings. Instead, Gutierrez was nicked for three runs after scattering nine hits and striking out four.

Chattanooga broke through in the third inning when Nick Gordon muscled a triple through the teeth of the wind and then scored on Zander Wiel’s RBI single. In the fourth, the Lookouts added two more when they strung together a three-hit rally that included a hit batsman.

With two on, Ryan Walker singled home Brent Rooker before Gordon added the second of his two-hit night to score catcher Brian Navaretto and make it a 3-1 Chattanooga lead.

After the first inning, the Blue Wahoos wouldn’t record another hit until the sixth inning when LaValley singled to right to lead off the inning. A rally never came to be because the next two hitters flew out and grounded into a double-play, respectively.

Pensacola tried to conjure up some late magic in the eighth inning when Shed Long led off the inning with a single. Alfredo Rodriguez then hit into what appeared to be a fielder’s choice, but no Lookouts infielders were covering the bag at second allowing everyone to be safe. LaValley added his third hit of the night to load the bases, setting the stage for Guerrero. Although the Wahoos center fielder didn’t disappoint, the fish were snake bitten again by Lookouts defense again.

Guerrero singled to center scoring Long, but Rodriguez was thrown out by LaMonte Wade at the plate to keep the score line at 3-2. With the tying run still at second, VanMeter struck out to end the threat.

Chattanooga called on Williams Ramirez to finish off the Wahoos, and despite allowing a leadoff single to Aquino, he retired the next three batters in order to give the Lookouts their first win of the season.
