Eighth-Inning Walks Dooms The Wahoos In 3-2 defeat

September 8, 2018

Biloxi scored twice in the eighth innings thanks to four walks issued by the Wahoos bullpen and won Friday’s game 3-2 at Blue Wahoos Stadium. The Shuckers can now clinch a spot in the championship round with a win in either of the remaining two games.

It was the second defeat of the series that was mired with self-defeat rather than having been outclassed. Tony Santillan started the game for Pensacola allowed one run on two hits across 6.1 masterful innings. He had four separate innings in which he retired the side in order, and he exited the game with eight strikeouts and only one walk.

For the Shuckers, Trey Supak looked like he was in trouble right from the start. After walking two batters in the first inning, he walked three more in the second. The Wahoos were able to score one run courtesy of Jose Siri’s two-out single that brought home Gavin LaValley in the bottom of the second. Supak lasted only three innings, but Pensacola only churned one run out of his six walks on the night.

With the game tied at one in the bottom of the seventh inning, TJ Friedl drew a leadoff walk and stole second base after Aristides Aquino struck out. With two outs, Shed Long placed a single perfectly through the right side, which scored Friedl and gave the Wahoos a 2-1 lead. However, Pensacola’s lead was short-lived. In the eighth, Robinson Leyer—who entered the game in the previous inning—walked Max McDowell to start the inning. After a bunt moved him into scoring position, Jody Davis brought in Jesus Reyes to face Corey Ray. Reyes walked the bases loaded before allowing a sac fly to tie the game and a double to Keston Hiura, which gave Biloxi a 3-2 lead. Alejandro Chacin then replaced Reyes, and after walking Lucas Erceg, he induced Blake Allemand into an inning-ending groundout. The Shuckers scored twice on one hit and four walks.

Pensacola had a last gasp in the ninth against Nate Griep when Friedl drew his fourth walk of the game with one out. After a Mitch Nay flyout, Aquino singled to put the tying run at third and two outs. With Long at the plate, the Wahoo second baseman groundout out to short on a bang-bang play to give Biloxi a 2-1 series lead.

Game four of the South Division Series returns to Biloxi where the Wahoos are looking to avoid elimination. RHP Daniel Wright led the Southern League with 28 starts this season, and he will be tasked with keeping the Wahoos season alive. Biloxi is expected to start with RHP Marcos Diplan.

Gutierrez Powers Wahoos To 4-1 Win In Game 2

September 7, 2018

In the biggest game of the Wahoos season, one of the Reds best pitching prospects turned in his best performance of the season. Vladimir Gutierrez (W, 1-0) turned in seven strong innings and drove in two as the Wahoos defeated the Shuckers 4-1 Thursday night to even the Southern League South Division Series.

Before Gutierrez ever toed the rubber, the Wahoos had the lead. Jose Siri doubled off the first pitch from Thomas Jankins (L, 0-1) and after a bunt single from TJ Friedl, Mitch Nay delivered an RBI groundout to put the Wahoos up 1-0. After a single from Gavin LaValley, the Wahoos doubled their lead behind Shed Long’s sac fly to make it 2-0.

Irrespective of Pensacola’s quick start, Thursday was all about Gutierrez. Corey Ray led off the home half of the first with a shallow fly ball to center field that escaped past a diving Siri. Instead of taking the double, Ray tried to take third base but was thrown out after a beautiful relay throw by Taylor Featherston for the first out. After that play, Gutierrez retired 19 of the next 20 Shuckers that came to the plate, including 12 straight.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Wahoos manufactured a pair of runs thanks to solid execution and a little bit of good fortune. With Miguel Sanchez in the game and LaValley down in the count 0-2, the Wahoos first baseman managed to draw a leadoff walk. After a wild pitch moved LaValley to second, Taylor Featherston struck out but reached after the pitch escaped catcher Tyler Heineman for another wild pitch. After Chris Okey struck out for the first, Featherston advanced to second on Sanchez’s third wild pitch of the inning. Gutierrez hit for himself and laced a double to right-center for his first professional RBI’s to give the Wahoos a 4-1 lead.

After picking up two quick outs in the bottom of the inning, Troy Stokes Jr singled and stole second base. He later scored on a double from Lucas Erceg to cut Pensacola’s lead down to 4-1. However, Biloxi would get no closer in game two. After finding the first out in the eighth, Jody Davis went to the bullpen and brought in Carlos Navas (S, 1), who retired the final five outs of the game to give Pensacola a critical win in the series. The victory snaps a six-game losing streak to the Shuckers and it is Pensacola’s first ever playoff win in four tries against Biloxi.

Game three of the South Division Series will begin Friday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium at 6:35. Because Biloxi won both halves, this is the only game in the series that will be played in Pensacola. RHP Tony Santillan will have the chance to give the Wahoos a 2-1 series lead and he will be opposed by RHP Trey Supak.

Wahoos Lose 5-3 In 12 Innings In Game One

September 6, 2018

With the bases loaded and one out, Max McDowell came off the bench a hit a ground-rule double off Joel Bender (L, 0-1) to give the Shuckers a thrilling 5-3 win in game one of the Southern League South Division Series.

The Wahoos were off to a dream start after TJ Friedl homered off the 2018 Southern League’s Most Outstanding Pitcher, Zack Brown, to give Pensacola a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Friedl only hit two home runs during the regular season; however, one of those two came at MGM Park.

Seth Varner opened the game for the Wahoos and grinded his way through five innings. In the first inning, the Shuckers had the bases loaded and couldn’t score. In the third inning, Biloxi had two men on with nobody out, and again, Varner kept Biloxi off the board. Eventually, the southpaw was lifted after five innings having allowed one run on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

In the seventh inning, Taylor Featherston led off the inning with a solo homer off Jeff Ames to restore Pensacola’s two-run lead over the Shuckers. However, Featherston gave that run back in the bottom of the inning with an errant throw. With two outs and a runner at third, Featherston fielded a grounder cleanly but missed badly with his throw to first, which allowed Troy Stokes Jr. to score to cut Pensacola’s lead down to 3-2.

In the eighth inning and Robinson Leyer pitching, Lucas Erceg hit two-out solo home run on an 0-2 pitch to tie the game at three. For Leyer, it was his first homer allowed since August 20 when he allowed an eighth-inning home run to Clint Coulter at MGM Park. In the ninth, Jody Davis brought in Alejandro Chacin, and despite loading the bases with only one out, Chacin struck out the side to send the game into extras.

After scoreless 10th and 11th innings, the Shuckers led off the 12th with a pair of singles against Bender. Weston Wilson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move up the runners, and after an intentional walk to load the bases. Mike Guerrero brought in McDowell—his only other catcher—to pinch hit for the pitcher’s spot in the lineup. Davis brought in Jose Siri from center in order to have a five-man infield, but McDowell laced a walk-off double to give Biloxi a series-opening win. It appeared after the hit that no other runners touched home plate despite the ball bouncing out of play, and by rule, McDowell’s walk-off is potentially subject to change as a single, thus changing the final score to 4-3.

Game two of the South Division Series will begin Thursday night at MGM Park. RHP Vladimir Gutierrez gets the nod in an imperative game for Pensacola while Biloxi will send out RHP Thomas Jankins

Wahoos Clinch Playoff Berth In 4-3 Win Over Smokies

September 4, 2018

Pensacola missed out on a chance to win the second-half title with a 3-0 loss to the Smokies on Labor Day at Smokies Stadium.

Offense was hard to come by for both teams on Monday. All three of Tennessee’s runs came in the third inning after the Wahoos ran into injury trouble. Wyatt Strahan (L, 7-12) started the game and left with one out in the bottom of the third due to a blister on his pitching hand. Rafael De Paula replaced Strahan and with his third pitch to P.J. Higgins, he struck in the hand by a line drive, which forced him to leave the game. Higgins’s single loaded the bases, and it forced Carlos Navas to enter the game. He allowed a bases-clearing double to Eddy Martinez to give the Smokies a 3-0 lead.

Keegan Thompson (W, 6-3) pitched five shutout innings and allowed one hit while striking out five. Only twice were the Wahoos able to move runners into scoring position; however, the Wahoos were unable to cash in on either of those opportunities.

Pensacola’s bullpen was nothing short of brilliant given the circumstances of Monday’s contest. After Navas allowed the double to Martinez, the bullpen pitched 5.2 hitless innings. Nick Howard pitch three innings after making an appearance in Sunday’s win and Alejandro Chacin closed out the eighth inning in order.

Pensacola and Biloxi will open the 2018 Southern League Playoffs on Wednesday at MGM Park. The Shuckers won both halves, which means that four of the five games will be played in Biloxi if needed. Neither team has disclosed who will start the playoff opener.

Wahoos Clinch Playoff Berth In 4-3 Win Over Smokies

September 3, 2018

Taylor Featherston delivered a go-ahead two-run homer against Scott Effross (L, 2-6) and the Wahoos clinched a playoff berth for the fourth season in a row with a 4-3 win Sunday night Smokies Stadium.

Trailing 2-1 in the in the seventh inning, Gavin LaValley led off the inning with a single. Featherston followed and belted Effross’s 2-1 pitch over the right-field fence, which put Pensacola up 4-3. The Wahoos picked up their first two runs of the game courtesy of Shed Long’s two-run homer in the top of the fourth.

Daniel Wright started the game for the Wahoos and allowed three runs across five innings. After scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Smokies took the lead against Wright after Eddy Martinez hit a two-run homer to give the hosts a temporary 3-2 lead.

The bullpen turned in four shutout innings for Jody Davis to secure the win. Nick Howard (W, 2-0) turned in a scoreless sixth inning, and after the Wahoos retook the lead, Joel Bender pitched two scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth. Alex Powers (S, 18) closed out the ninth inning in what will likely be his final appearance of the regular season with his 18th save of the year.

With Mobile’s loss to the Biscuits earlier in the day, Pensacola mathematically clinched the final spot in the 2018 Southern League Playoffs with a chance to defend last year’s Southern League Championship. The Wahoos join the Montgomery Biscuits as the second Southern League team this decade to make the playoffs four years in a row. Pensacola will begin their title defense on Wednesday, September 5 in Biloxi against the Shuckers.

With Birmingham’s 6-3 win over Biloxi on Sunday, the Wahoos can clinch the second-half title with a win over Tennessee and a Biloxi loss on Monday. As it currently stands the Wahoos are guaranteed a playoff spot as the wildcard, meaning that four of the five games (if needed) would be played at MGM Park. If the Shuckers hang on to win the second-half, Pensacola’s only home playoff game in the first round would be on Friday, September 7 at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

The 2018 regular season concludes Monday afternoon in Kodak. RHP Wyatt Strahan (7-11, 6.35) is looking to wrap up the campaign on a winning note while RHP Keegan Thompson aims to give Tennessee a consolation win to end their season.

Wahoos Bounce Back To Win 10-6 In 10 Innings

September 2, 2018

Pensacola scored four runs in the 10th inning to surge past the Smokies for a 10-6 win Saturday night at Smokies Stadium.

It was the second consecutive extra-inning game for the Wahoos and they didn’t let Saturday’s game slip away. With Jose Siri starting on second base, Mitch Nay reached on an infield single to set up runners on the corners with only one out. Jordan Minch walked Aristides Aquino to load the bases before he walked Shed Long to bring home the go-ahead run. After a sac fly from Gavin LaValley gave the Wahoos an 8-6 lead, Chris Okey brought home a pair with a two-out single to give Pensacola the eventual winning scoreline of 10-6.

Aquino had a monster night at the plate hitting a pair of home runs and driving in four. His first dinger came in the first inning off Thomas Hatch to put the Wahoos up 3-1. Then in the eighth, Aquino took Brad Markey deep, which put Pensacola ahead 6-3 at the time.

But despite insurance, the Aquino’s bat offered, the Wahoos were unable to sustain either of those three-run leads. With the Smokies trailing 3-1, P.J. Higgins homered in the fourth off Tony Santillan to cut Tennessee’s deficit to one. The Smokies tied the game in the fifth after Conner Myers singled before Hatch doubled him home.

Tennessee’s big rally came in the eighth when they sent all nine men to the plate. After a leadoff single, Wynton Bernard hit a routine groundball to short, but Luis Gonzalez’s sent an errant throw towards second that sailed pass Shed Long for his league-leading 30th error of the season. Higgins followed with a two-run triple and later scored on a fielder’s choice from Jesse Hodges to tie the game at 6-6.

With a double in the sixth and a single in the ninth, Higgins became the third Southern League player this season to hit for the cycle and did so in reverse order. He reached in all five of his plate appearances, and even drew a walk giving him an even rarer “super cycle.”

Pensacola picks up a half-game over Mobile as they were washed out today and are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday. As it stands, the Wahoos have a two-game lead in the wildcard with the BayBears having a game in hand. Biloxi earned another win over the Barons to maintain their 1.5 game lead over Pensacola.

The series continues Sunday night and the Wahoos will send veteran RHP Daniel Wright (7-10, 4.12) to the hill. Tennessee will go with RHP Michael Rucker (9-6, 3.74) in the penultimate game of the series.
