Fighting Back: Northview Chiefs Deliver Hurricane Relief Supplies To Blountstown

October 22, 2018

A funeral was held Sunday for the mother of a Blountstown Tigers football player.

It was only about a month ago that the Northview Chiefs traveled to battle it out with the  Blountstown Fighting Tigers on their football field. Today that football stadium is in shambles from Hurricane Michael. The bleaches are a tangled mess, stadium lights are down and portions of the school’s roof were ripped off.

The Chiefs football team, volleyball team, FFA, students and the community gathered supplies that were delivered Sunday by students, parents and volunteers.

For Blountstown resident Deborah Horst, seeing a Chiefs shirt was a heartwarming moment. “My niece and two nephews graduated from Northview so when I saw the shirts I felt a kindred spirit and deeply moved,” she told NorthEscambia.com. She just had to meet the Chiefs and snap a few pictures (some of which you will find on this page and in our photo gallery).

“Thank you so much for helping our in our community! What a blessing you were for us,” Horst said.

The eyewall of the monster hurricane directly hit Blountstown, 40 miles away from landfall in Mexico Beach. Most homes were damaged; many were destroyed. Trees were snapped like toothpicks. Power is just beginning to return inside town, and a handful of businesses were back open Sunday. Outside the town, most residents are still in the dark. The tarps — the blue roofs — arrived Sunday.

And Blountstown plans to play football this upcoming Saturday. The are the Fighting Tigers after all.

Big Win: Pensacola State, Coastal Alabama Face Off In Century Classic

October 21, 2018

Pensacola State College and  Coastal Alabama Community College in the “Century Classic” faced off in both softball and baseball Saturday Showalter Park. And organizers are calling it a big win.

In softball, Pensacola State blanked Coastal Alabama 6-0, and in baseball the Warhawks of Coastal Alabama beat the PSC Pirates 7-5.

Century council member Ben Boutwell, who is an assistant baseball coast at Coastal Alabama, said the day was a great opportunity for residents from across the North Escambia area to see the teams close to home.

“It’s a win-win for us,” Boutwell said. “It was a beautiful day, and the fields turned out gorgeous. We just thank everybody for their hard work.” Volunteers from the Pensacola Blue Wahoos recently spent time bringing the fields up to spec.

Boutwell said plans are already in the works to bring the Century Classic back next year.

“We are trying to make it an annual event,” he said. “This is a benchmark, and it can only get better.”

Boutwell, a Century High School graduate, played on first Jefferson Davis Community College baseball team in 1982. Jeff Davis later became Coastal Alabama.

“I just love baseball,” he said.

Former PSC and Major League Baseball players Bill Sadler and Greg Litton, along with Escambia County District 5 Commissioner Steven Barry and Kazoo, the Wahoo’s mascot, were special guests.

Sadler pitched for the San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros during his MLB career. A 2000 Catholic High School graduate, he played at Pensacola Junior College in 2001 and 2002, before transferring to Louisiana State University in 2003.

Litton, a utility player, was drafted in the first round by the San Francisco Giants in 1984. He later played for the Seattle Mariners and Boston Red Sox. In 1983 and 1984, Litton was on the PSC Pirates squad before signing to play at Mississippi State University. However, he was drafted before joining the Mississippi State team.

Proceeds will from the event benefit the Buck Showalter Scholarship fund for GED students from the Century area. The Century Classic was sponsored by the Town of Century, Century Little League, Pensacola State College, Coastal Alabama Warhawks and Pensacola Sports Association.

The Baker Gators continued their winning streak Friday night  35-7 over the Northview Chiefs. The Gators have won 28 consecutive regular season games.

Baker jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Northview’s Trent Peebles was into the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown to tie it up 7-7. The Gators stopped the Chiefs twice on goal line stances hang onto a 13-7 lead at the half.

Northview (4-4, 1-1) will host Snook Christian Academy of Foley, AL, next Friday night in Bratt for Senior Night before an away game November 2 at Freeport.

Before Friday night, Northview was fourth in Class 1-1A. The top four teams will host a first round playoff game, while the bottom four will travel.  Wins in the final two regular season games would set Northview up for a likely home playoff game on November 9.

FHSAA Expands 1A Football Playoffs Due To Michael

October 19, 2018

The Florida High School Athletic Association has expanded this year’s Class 1A-Region 1 and 1A-Region 2 playoff format following Hurricane Michael. Now there will be eight teams in each regional playoff instead of six.

“It became abundantly clear that because of Hurricane Michael, it will take many schools several weeks to reorganize and field a football team.  It is with great thought and conversation that the best path for all communities, schools, coaches and most importantly student-athletes, is to allow eight teams,” the FHSAA said. Each team will be seeded from 1-8.

Currently, the Top 8 teams in 1-1A in rank order are:

  1. Baker
  2. Vernon
  3. Jay
  4. Northview
  5. Graceville
  6. Bozeman
  7. Holmes County
  8. Chipley

Freeport is ranked number nine.

Currently, the Top 8 teams in 2-1A in rank order are:

  1. Jefferson County
  2. Sneads
  3. Blountstown
  4. Port St. Joe
  5. Wewahitchka
  6. Cottondale
  7. Liberty County
  8. Franklin County

Each team’s schedule that was submitted at the beginning of the 2018 season will be used for playoff qualification based on the football point’s structure. Each team will earn a seed of 1–8 based on their end of the regular season point average.

The higher seed will host each round throughout the region playoffs.
