Dirt Sharks, Aggie Mountain Bike Teams Place In Season Opener (With Gallery)

The Gulf Coast Youth Mountain Bike Association GCYMBA, kicked off its 2023 season this recently in the Alabama Cycling Association at Chewacla State Park in Auburn with the time trial prologue.

The GCYMBA is made up of 30 athletes grades 6-12 from Pensacola, South Alabama, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. With growth, the association now has two mountain bike teams – the Gulf Coast Composite “Dirt Sharks” and the Aggie Mountain Bike Team which consists of athletes from the Cantonment area.

Despite rain, middle school athletes represented the Gulf Coast very well in rainy and muddy conditions. Finley Fryfogle of the Dirt Sharks earned her first place podium with a big 20 second lead over her closest competitor in the sixth grade girls category. Sofia Franklin of the Aggie Mountain Bike Team won fourth place podium in sixth grade girls category. Braden Ruiz of the Aggie team won fourth place podium in the seventh grade boys category.

The high school athletes faced muddy trail conditions after continuous rain. The Aggie Mountain Bike Team’s Avery Storther won first place in the varsity girls category with a 20 second lead over second place. Eli Forehand of the Aggie team won third place in the ninth grade boys category.

Northview, Tate Open Baseball Season With Wins; Softball Teams Fall Short

The high school baseball and softball seasons opened Tuesday night for the Tate Aggies and the Northview Chiefs. Both baseball teams had wins, while both softball teams fell short.

BASEBALL

Tate 17, Navarre 4

  • The Tate Aggies had a 12-run second inning and five home runs Tuesday night in a big 17-4 win at Navarre. Brayden Touchstone had two homers. Ethan McAnally, Drew Reaves and James Davis each had a dinger. Gabriel Patterson earned the win for Tate on the mound.

Northview 7, Flomaton 5

  • Cason Burkett led the Chiefs driving in four while going 3-3 at the plate, and earned the win on the mound.

SOFTBALL

Gulf Breeze 10, Tate 0

T.R. Miller 21, Northview 2

  • Aubrey Stuckey had a home run in the second for the Chiefs.

Disc Golf Added A Travis M. Nelson Park In Bratt

Escambia County Parks and Recreation recently added two new disc golf practice goals at the Travis M Nelson Park in Bratt.

The 40 acre park also has two large covered pavilions with picnic tables, a playground, seven-tenths of a mile walking track, full basketball court, exercise equipment, softball/baseball practice fields, a little free library and free high speed Wi-Fi.

The park is named in honor of Marine Lance Cpl. Travis M. Nelson, who was killed in 2011 while serving in Afghanistan. A monument stands in his honor.

Travis M. Nelson Park is located on West Highway 4 at Bratt Road, just west of Northview High School. It is open from sunrise to sunset.

Century Blackcats Top Jay 34-24 To Claim Youth Basketball Championship

In youth basketball, the Century Blackcats varsity team (ages 11-13) defeated the Jay Rebels 34-24 in the league championship game Saturday afternoon in Chumuckla.

Century jumped out to an early 8-2 lead and never looked back on their way to claiming the championship. Tristan Pace led the Blackcats in scoring with 14 points.

“This was an all around team effort, the hard work by the coaches, the players, and the supportive parents really paid off today,” Century coach Kris Chancery said. “Go Blackcats!”

Tate Aggies 6A Playoff Run Ends In Orange Park

February 18, 2023

The Tate Aggies 6A playoff run came to an end Friday night with a 51-40 regional loss to Oakleaf in Orange Park, Florida.

The Aggies season record was 18-6.

The No. 4 Gulf Breeze Dolphins will travel February 21 to take on No. 1 Ponte Vedra. The Aggies defeated No. 5 Nease 54-49 Friday night.

Tate baseball will open their regular season on Tuesday, February 21 at Navarre. The first home game for the Aggies will be March 2 at 6:30 p.m. against Crestview.

Northview’s season opens as they host Flomaton on February 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Northview Grad Fletcher Signs With German Pro Football Team

A 2015 Northview High School graduate is fulfilling his dream to play professional football.

Ray Fletcher of Century signed Thursday to play American-style football for the Minden Wolves in Minden, Germany.

“Words can’t explain how I feel,” Fletcher said.

Fletcher is currently a junior playing for NCAA Division II Bluefield State University in Bluefield, West Virginia.

Tate Aggies Pep Rally Celebrates Winter Sports (With Photo Gallery)

Tate High School held a pep rally Wednesday to celebrate the successes of their winter sports, along with a send-off for the boy’s basketball team as they head to the 6A regional quarterfinals.

Sports recognized included the cheerleading squad, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls weightlifting, and boys and girls basketball.

Pep rally events included a winter sport relay race’ a teacher competition of heads, shoulders, knees and cups; a basketball play dance-off; and a schoolwide rock, paper, scissors competition.

The Tate Showband of the South ended the pep rally by winning the P-A-R-T-Y Spirit Stick Challenge.
