Wahoos Blanked By Biloxi

May 3, 2019

The Blue Wahoos fell for the third straight game, their longest losing streak of the season, losing 1-0 to Biloxi on Thursday evening at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

Jorge Alcala bounced back from a pair of tough starts and provided the Wahoos with 5.0 shutout innings, striking out eight and walking none. Opposing him on the mound for Biloxi, Trey Supak was just as good, throwing 5.0 as well and allowing just one hit while striking out four.

On offense, the Blue Wahoos got their first hit of the game in the first inning, when Jaylin Davis lined a single to left. Pensacola didn’t have another hit until the eighth inning when Davis again singled, this time up the middle. They’d have just one additional hit, an eighth inning single by Luis Arraez.

After five strong innings by Alcala, RHP Jeff Ames threw 2.0 hitless innings of relief, striking out four of the six batters he faced.

RHP Cody Stashak followed in eighth inning. He ran into trouble quickly, allowing a single to the first batter he faced and hitting the second. A bunt moved both runners over. With runners on second and third, a passed ball by Caleb Hamilton allowed what proved to be the games only run to score. Stashak struck out the next two batters to escape the jam with just one run allowed.

The Blue Wahoos threatened in the home half of the eighth. Ernie De La Trinidad led off the frame with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt by Jordan Gore. Arraez then lined a single into left that advanced De La Trinidad to third. With the tying run at third, Biloxi reliever Daniel Brown used a strike out and a ground out to get out of the frame with Biloxi’s lead still intact.

Shuckers closer Nate Griep retired the side in order to earn his fifth save of the season.

The loss drops Pensacola’s record to 17-10 while Biloxi improves to 14-13 with the win. The two teams will play game three of their five-game set Friday evening.

Blue Wahoos Drop May Opener To Biloxi

May 2, 2019

After a record-setting month of April highlighted by brilliant starting pitching, the Blue Wahoos stumbled out of the gate in May, allowing seven early runs in a 7-3 loss to the Biloxi Shuckers on Wednesday evening.

RHP Sean Poppen took the mound for the Wahoos sporting an unbeaten record an a minuscule 0.75 ERA. After a quick first inning, he ran into trouble in the second. In the game’s second frame, Poppen struggled to find the strike zone, walking four batters in the inning and allowing three runs on two hits.

After the tough second, Poppen was replaced on the mound by LHP Tyler Jay to open the third inning. After retiring the first two batters, the inning unraveled for Jay. Five consecutive batters reached on two walks, a single, a double, and a triple, and four runs scored to put the Shuckers up 7-0.

Pensacola took a run back in both the third and the fourth innings. In the third, Tanner English was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Luis Arraez. Mitchell Kranson plated him with an RBI ground out. In the fourth, Joe Cronin slipped a triple under the glove of a diving Trent Grisham and scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Grzelakowski.

Those were the only two runs the Wahoos would get off Biloxi starter Johan Belisario, who earned his first win of the year by going 5.0 innings and allowing just three hits. The Wahoos added a run against reliever Marcos Diplan in the sixth, loading the bases on singles by Jaylin Davis and Travis Blankenhorn and a walk to Joe Cronin before a sacrifice fly by Grzelakowski.

The Blue Wahoos received quality relief from Sam Clay and Adam Bray, who combined to throw 5.0 hitless innings and strike out six batters.

Pensacola finished the game, their first series-opening loss of the season, with six hits. Blankenhorn was 2-4 in his first game at Blue Wahoos Stadium after a recent call-up from A+ Fort Myers. Grzelakowki was 1-2 with a double and a pair of runs batted in.

The loss drops Pensacola’s record to 17-9, still best in the Southern League, while Biloxi improves to 13-13. The two teams will continue their five-game set Thursday.

Wahoos Fall 3-1 In Series Finale In Jackson

April 30, 2019

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos fell 3-1 in their series finale against the Jackson Generals on Monday afternoon, finishing off what has otherwise been an overwhelmingly successful month for the team. The Blue Wahoos will head back to Pensacola sporting their best April record in club history (17-8), having won all five series in April for the first time in franchise history.

The Blue Wahoos continued their habit of scoring early in games, going up 1-0 in the top of the first on a solo home run by Travis Blankenhorn, his first in Double-A after a promotion from A+ Fort Myers. With the home run, the Blue Wahoos have now scored first in 20 of 25 games this season and scored in the first or second inning for the 14th time.

The Generals answered with a solo home run of their own in the home half of the first inning from Jeffey Baez off of Wahoos starter Griffin Jax, who had entered the game with the best ERA in the Southern League (0.41). Following the solo shot, Jax settled in and provided 5.1 strong innings, allowing no additional runs on just three additional hits.

Generals starter Matt Peacock matched Jax zero-for-zero after the first inning, allowing just two hits over 4.0 innings. He combined with a quartet of relievers to keep the Wahoos from scoring further in the game, as just two Pensacola base runners reached scoring position in the contest.

The score stayed locked at 1-1 until the seventh inning. Ben DeLuzio worked a one out walk against Wahoos reliever Jovani Moran. After a strike out of Galli Cribbs Jr., Andy Young pulled a two-run shot to left field to put the Generals up 3-1.

Kevin Ginkel (1-1) earned his first win of the season for the Generals, throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and striking out a pair. Former Twins farmhand Michael Kohn picked up his league-leading sixth save by striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Offensively, the Wahoos had just four hits in the game, the eighth time this season they’ve had four or less hits in the game.

After an off-day on Tuesday, the Blue Wahoos will welcome the Biloxi Shuckers (12-13) to Pensacola for a five-game set to open the month of May., continuing the ongoing Seafood Buffet Rivalry Series between Pensacola, Biloxi, and Jacksonville. The Wahoos currently have a 7-3 record in the series. Sean Poppen (2-0, 0.75 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener for the Wahoos.

Wahoos Beat Jackson

April 29, 2019

The Blue Wahoos captured their fifth series win in a row to start the season with a convincing 8-3 victory over the Jackson Generals Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at Jackson.

Devin Smeltzer (W, 3-1) continued to impress as a starter with five shutout innings in which the southpaw yielded only four base runners across his five innings. The only time a runner reached scoring position was on a fly ball into right field that was mishandled by Jaylin Davis and resulted in a triple for Jackson’s Ben DeLuzio. Smeltzer made quick work of the next batter, Galli Cribbs, and escaped the fifth with the General still off the board.

Jackson starter Sam Lewis (L, 1-2) was cruising the game’s first four innings but labored in the fifth. After a pair of walks and a single, Luis Arraez hit what looked like a potential inning-ending double play to the shortstop Andy Young. However, Young misplayed it for his second error of the season, which resulted in the Wahoos taking a 1-0 lead. The Wahoos would capitalize on another mistake on a passed ball from Domini Miroglio in the same inning to double their advantage.

Pensacola added three more runs in the sixth inning thanks to four hits off Ryan Atkinson. When the dust settled, the Wahoos had sent eight men to the plate and led 5-0.

Adam Bray replaced Smeltzer in the sixth and provided quality relief despite a small hiccup in his first inning of work. After retiring the first two batters he faced, he walked Jamie Westbrook before surrendering a two-run home run to Daulton Varsho, which cut Jackson’s deficit down to 5-2.

Pensacola would put the game away in the eighth when they scored three more runs against former big leaguer Damien Magnifico. The former Milwaukee Brewer struggled mightily with his command, walking three batters in the eighth and allowing a two-run homer to Taylor Grzelakowski, which was his first career Double-A round-tripper. Caleb Hamilton finished the game with a pair of RBIs, and eight of the nine Wahoos in the lineup reached base safely at least once.

For the first time in franchise history, the Blue Wahoos have opened a season by winning each of the first five series out of the gate
