November 9, 2019

“Credit to Jay, they showed a lot of character from them because we had just beaten them by 33 last week. They easily could have come in and laid down like hey we are going to lose again, but I thought they fought really hard, and coaches did a really good job,” Northview head coach Derek Marshman said after the win.

Marshman said the Chiefs suffered from turnovers that led to a much closer game this week between the Royals and Chiefs.

“Five turnovers, four in the first half and one in the second half and then really six if you count a pick on a two point conversion. So sloppy from us but our kids were resilient and they fought hard; they battled through the adversity Our first three possessions was three turnovers; our opening kicking and then our next two possessions were three turnovers but our kids are resilient, they battled,” Marshman said. “Different game than last week, it played out differently they made us work a little bit more made us go on drives a little bit. We were able to sustain those and I thought we did a really good job of finishing.”

Junior Jaheem Durant  had an offensive touchdown, defensive touchdown and a special teams touchdown to lead Chiefs.  Trent Peebles, Jayden Jackson, Mark Findley, and Jaheem Durant had touchdowns for Northview, and Marshman also gave a lot of credit to the D-line.

“The defense played really good ,” he said. “They had a lot of success last week with the pass and Keyshawn Breedlove really stepped up with a big, big game tonight. He ended up with a pick and the defensive line was just great tonight on pass rush, I mean time after time getting to the quarterback, hurrying him, sacking him, forcing fumbles….I thought we did great upfront some success there late against the run. Overall defensive line did a great job.”

The Chiefs (8-2)  will travel about 120 miles down the road to Vernon (7-3) next week for the Region 1-1A semifinals.

“It’s going to be a heck of a football game I’m sure,” Marshman said. “It’s going to be a big time challenge for us. We will have to play better. We can’t afford five turnovers next week.”

November 3, 2019

The Northview Chiefs will be at home Friday night against the Jay Royals in the first round of the Florida High School Athletic Association 1A state championship series.

The Florida High School Athletic Association released final rankings and playoff brackets Sunday morning.

The Baker Gators remain the top ranked team in Region 1-1A and have a bye Friday night, along with Vernon, the No. 2 ranked team. The Chiefs are ranked No. 3, while Jay is ranked No. 6. Only the top six teams in the region make the playoffs.

The Chiefs (7-2) are coming off a 40-7 win just this past Friday night over Jay (4-6). The winner of the Northview vs. Jay regional quarterfinal game will advance to face Vernon (7-3) on November 15 in the regional semifinal round. Baker will face the winner of next Friday night’s Graceville at Freeport game.

Northview’s only two losses this season were 14-12 to Baker and 34-26 to the defending Alabama 3A state champion Flomaton Hurricanes.  Baker’s 38-game regular season win streak came to an end Saturday night as Blountstown beat the Gators 33-7.

Kickoff for Friday night’s game is 7:30 p.m.

Final Region 1-1A final rankings are as follows:

  1. Baker 0.665 (9-1)
  2. Vernon 0.629 (7-3)
  3. Northview 0.625 (7-2)
  4. Freeport 0.574 (6-3)
  5. Graceville 0.573 (7-3)
  6. Jay 0.502 (4-6)

  8. Chipley 0.446 (2-8)
  9. Cottondale 0.418 (2-7)

Teams are ranked based upon a RPI formula. RPI stands for Ratings Percentage Index. In short, it is a way to measure a team’s strength relative to other teams, based largely on the strength of their schedules.

Final four play is November 29, and the 1A state championship is in Tallahassee on December 7.

Northview Chiefs Beat The Jay Royals (With Photo Gallery)

November 2, 2019

The Northview Chiefs wrapped up their regular season with a big 40-7 road win over the Jay Royals Friday night.

The Chiefs started a little slow with only 14 plays, and 14 points, in the first half. Their first touchdown came with 1.7 second to the go in the first quarter from junior Jayden Jackson and the second on a long run by Jaheem Durant with 6:55 on the clock in the second.

“I thought Jay played really hard coming out of the gate. They did a really good job of keeping the ball out of our hands,” Northview Head Coach Derek Marshman said. “We only had 14 plays in the first half so it was really tough for us to get our feet going. I thought at halftime we made a lot of good adjustments offensively, and obviously it paid dividends. We had a lot of big plays in the second half.”

On the first play of the second half from scrimmage, Jackson had a 64-yard touchdown run for a 20-0 Chiefs lead. Then with 6:33 in the third, quarterback Ben Wilson hand off to sophomore Damerion Findley for a 58-yard run, 26-0. Toss in another Durant touchdown, and Northview held a 33-0 advantage after three.

Jackson scored again for the Chiefs in the fourth to start the running clock with 9:09 in the ballgame. Jay had a late touchdown from senior Brent Eister for the final, 40-7.

The Chiefs (7-2) are without a doubt in the 1A playoffs, but their next game remains to be seens. If they hold the No. 2 ranking in Region 1-1A, they will have a bye next Friday night. If they should slip to No. 3, they will be home next Friday night against a to be determined opponent. The FHSAA will announce playoff pairings on Sunday.
