Gilley placed at regionals in snatch, clean and jerk, and bench.

Tate High Girls Weightlifting Team Competes In Districts, Regionals

The Tate High School Girls weightlifting team recently attended the FHSAA Class 3A District 1 Championships at Niceville High School and the Class 3A Region 1 Championships at Flagler Palm Coast High School in Saint Augustine.

Jay High Gym Dedicated As ‘John Clarence Smith Gymnasium’ In Honor Of Legendary Coach

The Jay High School gym was renamed the “John Clarence Smith Gymnasium” during a Thursday night ceremony.
Smith, now 96-years old, is a legendary coach and an iconic figure in the community.
He coached the Jay Royals for 36 seasons, from 1951 to 1989, with 613 career wins.
Smith graduated from Jay High School as salutatorian in 1944. The World War II veteran was an educator in Santa Rosa County for 38 years.
In 1991, he was inducted as a charter member of the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
Players from four decades were on hand for the celebration.

Grace Fellowship Offering Upward Sports Flag Football And Cheerleading Program

Grace Fellowship in Atmore will be hosting an Upward Sports flag football and cheerleading league, and an early bird registration rate is available through this week.
This spring, they will offer flag football and cheerleading for grades K-6. Practices will be held on Thursday afternoons and evenings from March 24-May 12, and games will be played on Saturday mornings April 9-May 14.
“This is not in competition with anyone else but simply an alternative to allow kids to have something to do that isn’t revolving around a screen,” said Youth Pastor Jonathan McMath from Grace Fellowship. “Our hope is that through this program kids can break down barriers and build up relationships with one another while also learning basic skills in sports.”
The early bird registration cost is $89 until January 22, then increasing to $99. The deadline to register is February 5. The cost includes uniforms and other necessities.

Tate High’s Trahan And Repine Compete In All America Classic In Orlando

Tate High School seniors Noah Trahan and Zane Repine played in the 2022 All America Classic game Saturday in Orlando.
The annual game, played at Camping World Stadium, showcases top high school players from across the county to college scouts while honoring those that have served in the armed forces or as first responders.
Trahan and Repine were members of the American team, which defeated the National team 28-27.

FWC Issues Alert After Chronic Wasting Disease Found In Alabama Deer

For the first time, chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been detected in a state that borders Florida, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is sounding a precautionary alarm.
CWD was recently detected in a hunter-harvested deer in northwestern Alabama, making it the 28th state where CWD has been documented. CWD, which is a brain and central nervous system disease that is always fatal to members of the deer family, has not been detected in Florida to date.
The FWC asks people who plan to hunt deer or members of the deer family outside of Florida to be vigilant in helping reduce the risk of CWD spreading into Florida. FWC said an important step is to be aware of and follow the rules that prohibit importing or possessing whole carcasses or high-risk parts of all species of the deer family originating from any place outside of Florida.
Under the new rules, which took effect July 2021, people may only import into Florida:
- De-boned meat
- Finished taxidermy mounts
- Clean hides and antlers
- Skulls, skull caps and teeth if all soft tissue has been removed
The only exception to this rule is deer harvested from a property in Georgia or Alabama that is bisected by the Florida state line and under the same ownership may be imported into Florida.
West Florida High Cheer Captain Jazmine Olsen Commits To Western Kentucky University

West Florida High School varsity cheerleading captain Jazmine Olsen has committed to cheer for Western Kentucky University in the fall. The WKU cheer team was the 2021 D1A All Girl UCA national championship team.
Olsen is also a competitive all star cheerleader for the Cheer Athletics Worlds team.

Lil Aggies Winter Cheer Clinic Set For January 14

The Tate High School Lil Aggies Winter Cheer Clinic will take place on Friday, January 14.
The clinic will begin at 4:30 p.m. and the game will follow at 7:30 p.m. The Lil Aggies cheerleaders will cheer on the Tate varsity boys basketball teams as they take on the Navarre Raiders.
The cost of the event is $40 per athlete, which includes an exclusive Lil Aggies basketball bow, pizza and a drink before the game, and game admission. Registration and payment are due by Monday, January 10th.
