Wahoos Blanked In Biloxi

April 28, 2022

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos got another solid start from Cody Mincey, but couldn’t get the bats going in a 2-0 to the Biloxi Shuckers on Wednesday night.

A two-run homer from Joey Wiemer in the first inning gave Biloxi an early lead, and Shuckers starter Tyler Herb (W, 2-1) struck out eight over 6.0 scoreless innings as he kept the Blue Wahoos at bay.

Mincey (L, 0-1) recovered to complete 5.0 innings on only 70 pitches, but the early home run was too much to overcome.

Pensacola got a pair of singles from Luis Aviles, Jr., a single from Troy Johnston and a double from Griffin Conine in their second shutout loss of the season. A trio of lefty relievers – Josh Simpson, Andrew Nardi and Jefry Yan – struck out five Biloxi batters over 3.0 scoreless innings for the Blue Wahoos. Robbie Hitt (S, 1) worked a tidy ninth to earn the save.

The game was played in just over two hours, the fastest game for the Blue Wahoos this season.

Blue Wahoos Rally Late For Win Over Biloxi

April 27, 2022

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos scored four unearned runs in the top of the ninth to steal their series opener against the Biloxi Shuckers on Tuesday night by a score of 7-4.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the ninth, Paul McIntosh’s deep fly ball was dropped by left fielder Noah Campbell to score three runs and give Pensacola a 6-3 lead.

George Soriano struggled with his command in his start for the Blue Wahoos, tying a career high with 6 walks over 3.1 innings. He allowed three runs in the first inning on only one hit, a Joey Wiemer RBI double.

Trailing 3-0 early, the Blue Wahoos got scoreless work from Soriano and Anthony Maldonado in the middle innings to keep the game within reach. A two-run homer from Luis Aviles Jr. in the fourth got Pensacola on the board, and Jerar Encarnacion tied things up in the seventh with his league-leading sixth homer of the year.

Eli Villalobos (W, 1-1) pitched scoreless relief in the seventh and eighth innings, setting the stage for McIntosh’s three-run fly ball in the ninth against Lucas Erceg (L, 0-1). Griffin Conine backed up the blunder with an RBI single to score McIntosh, marking the only hit of the four-run frame.

Colton Hock allowed a solo home run to Ashton McGee in the ninth, but got the final three outs to help the Blue Wahoos win their second in a row.

Wahoos Top Montgomery

April 25, 2022

Bryan Hoeing earned his first Double-A win on Sunday afternoon, helping the Pensacola Blue Wahoos secure a series split in their homestand finale against the Montgomery Biscuits in a 4-1 final.

Hoeing (W, 1-1) allowed his first earned run of the season, but still contributed 5.2 solid innings to lead another strong Blue Wahoos pitching effort.

Luis Aviles Jr. and Santiago Chávez opened up the scoring in the second inning against Montgomery starter Michael Mercado (L, 0-2), collecting RBI hits to take a 2-0 lead. Robert Alvarez drove in Montgomery’s lone run with an RBI single in the fifth, but the Blue Wahoos answered back in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back two-out RBI hits from Troy Johnston and Griffin Conine to take a 4-1 lead.

Conine had his first three-hit game of the year, and added an outfield assist to cut down a potential Montgomery run at the plate.

Josh Simpson and Andrew Nardi combined to strike out six batters over 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, and Colton Hock (S, 3) struck out two more in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save.

After an off day on Monday, the Blue Wahoos begin a 12-game road trip on Tuesday as they take on the Biloxi Shuckers.

Biscuits Top Wahoos 7-6

April 24, 2022

A ninth-inning home run from Ray-Patrick Didder wasn’t enough for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Saturday night, falling 7-6 to the Montgomery Biscuits in front of another sellout crowd.

Trailing by four and down to their final out, the Blue Wahoos got a three-run blast from Didder before Griffin Conine struck out to end the game.

Montgomery did most of their damage in the third inning, scoring six runs on only two hits against starter Zach McCambley (L, 0-1). A throwing error on a pickoff attempt from catcher Paul McIntosh brought home a pair of runs, and Jordan Qsar capped the inning with a three-run triple.

The Blue Wahoos answered back in the bottom of the third against Biscuits starter Ian Seymour, scoring three runs on a Troy Johnston RBI double, McIntosh RBI groundout and Didder RBI single.

Effective relief from Parker Bugg and Eli Villalobos held the Biscuits to only one run the rest of the way, allowing the Blue Wahoos to get within a run in the ninth before falling short.

Jerar Encarnacion added two more hits and a pair of walks in a 2-for-3 night, extending his hitting streak to 11 games while batting .500 over that stretch.
