Freddie Marshall Godwin

Freddie Marshall Godwin, age 75, of Century, FL, passed away on August 7, 2022.

He was born on May 9, 1947 in Bratt, FL to Ewing Daniel “Slim” Godwin and Ada Davis Godwin. Freddie was a supervisor with Masland Carpets until he retired.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Brenda Lois Godwin and his siblings: Lamar Godwin, Arvez Godwin, Lynwood Godwin, Wynne Kelly, Denise Wright, Audeen Wiggins and Beverly Ryland.

He is survived by his daughters: Brandy Godwin, Tonia (Tom) Presley and Sonia (Quint) Wilson; his sister, Sylvia Newman; seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 13, 2022, at noon at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel in Atmore, AL, with Bro. Don Sanks officiating. Interment will follow at Godwin Cemetery in Bratt, FL.

Active pallbearers will be Lamont Godwin, Quint Wilson, Tom Presley, Tim Ramer, Patrick Wilson and River Ramer.

Honorary pallbearers will be Anthony Rolin, Randy Dorriety, Johnnie Hadley, Carlie Edwards, Bobby McCall and Louie Thrower.

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 13, 2022, from 11 a.m. until service time at noon at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore, AL.

Alton Jackson “A.J.” Edwards

Alton Jackson, A.J. Edwards, age 78, of Bratt, FL, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2022 in his home surrounded by family. A.J was a graduate of Ernest Ward High School. He earned an associates degree from Faulkner State Community College.

A.J. was a veteran of the US Airforce and served in Vietnam. In 1969, A.J. opened A.J. Edwards Roofing CO and was owner and operator for 52 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bratt. He enjoyed panning for gold and it was something he shared with his grandkids. He was a storyteller and could be found talking with friends and drinking coffee at many locations in Atmore.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Jackson Edwards and Lizzie Godwin Edwards, siblings Alfred Edwards and James Edwards, Sharon Zettlemoyer and Marilyn Branch, and son-in-law Ray Hodgins.

He is survived by his wife of more than 57 years, Willie Jean Gilman Edwards; brothers, Carlton Edwards and Bernie(Debora) Edwards: children: Cindy Hodgins, Tracy Edwards, Della Rydzowski, and Wade (Brandi) Edwards; grandchildren, Steven Rydzowski, Ally Edwards, Alyse (Ben) Idell, Taylor Hodgins,

Braxton Edwards, Kaylee Hodgins, Bradi Edwards, Jackson Edwards, Nathan Hodgins, Macy Edwards, and Shelby and Sarah Rydzowski.

Funeral services will be conducted at Petty Eastside Chapel, Atmore, AL on Saturday, August 13, 2022. The viewing will be at 10:00 am and services at 11:00 with Pastor Jim Stickle officiating. Graveside service to follow at Godwin Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Taylor Hodgins, Braxton Edwards, Jackson Edwards, Nathan Hodgins, Ben Idell, and Cary Jordan Edwards.

Charles Howard Hall

August 7, 2022

Mr. Charles Howard Hall, age 68, passed away Friday, August 5, 2022 while in Covenant Care at Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola, FL. He was born August 8, 1953 in Atmore, AL and resided most of his life in Walnut Hill, FL. Mr. Hall was self-employed as a Carpenter the later years of his life while also serving many years in the oil field early in his career.

Mr. Hall valued time spent with Family, loved to hunt, loved to fish, and enjoyed spending time “tinkering” with small engines. He was a selfless person always willing to lend a hand to those in need. He dearly loved his dogs, had a good joke to tell at the right moment, and never missed an opportunity to pull a prank. His passion was “ALABAMA FOOTBALL.”

Mr. Hall is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard (Dorothy Mothershed) Hall, three sisters, Wanda Hall, Lila Lynn Smith, and Linda Hall.

Mr. Hall is survived by his son, Westly (Sallie) Woodruff of Gulf Shores, AL; two brothers, Dempsey (Mary) Hall of Century, FL; Eugene Hall of Atmore, AL; five sisters, Margie Chunn of Birmingham, AL; Ruby (Gary) Waller of Brewton, AL; Elizabeth “Connie” (Pierce) Conway of Little Rock, AL; Deborah “Debbie” (Gaines) Youngblood of Stockton, AL; Missie Moore of Mobile, AL; his grandchild Madeline Woodruff of Gulf Shores, AL; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday August 9, 2022 at 11:00am at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC with Rev. Don Parker officiating. Burial will follow services at Pine Barren Cemetery in Bratt, FL.

Visitation will coincide on the day of funeral services to be held Tuesday August 9, 2022 from 10:00am until service time at 11:00am at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Mr. Lester Peebles and Mr. Tony Walker.

Mattie Lee Deen

August 7, 2022

Mattie Lee Deen resident of Walnut Hill, Florida passed away on Monday, August 1, 2022. She was born on September 15, 1928 to the late William Marvin Bynum and Mary Estella Flint Bynum and raised in Seminary, Mississippi until moving to Pensacola, Florida in 1958.

Over the course of 64 years living in Pensacola, she attended Parkview Baptist Church, Lakeview Baptist Church and West Pensacola Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John Emmitt Deen; son, John Richard Deen; and grandson, Justice McLin.

Mattie is survived by daughter, Peggy Deen Wing; sons, Danny (Barbara) Deen and William (Pamela) Deen; and grandchildren, Celina Jarman, William Deen, Jr., Jedediah Deen McLin, John Philip Deen, Nathan Deen, and Patrick Deen; and five great grandchildren. A special thank you to Vitas Healthcare for all their support and care.

Joseph “Joe” Lewis McArthur

Joseph “Joe” Lewis McArthur of Pensacola, Florida, passed away August 3, 2022. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 22 years, Patricia Antionette, his mother Ada Gertrude and father Willie Fridge, brother Donald, sisters Lucy, Lois, Marie, Elouise and Mary Beth, grandson Daniel, along with several nieces and nephews.

Joe was born January 18, 1946 and worked 45 years building trusses, woodworking, and repairing small motors. He loved to fish and camp, browse thrift stores (especially Marcus Pointe and Waterfront Rescue Mission), go yard-selling, and buy or sell at the T&W flea market, where he was mostly known for selling lawn mowers, he repaired himself.

Joe was a supportive Papa, an honest man, and a giving soul. He was always active, finding ways to stay busy or looking for business prospects. You could catch him doing yard work, shopping, or attending Bellview Assembly of God, where he was a member for 25 years. Joe enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter Lily, tinkering whenever he could, and was always looking for an opportunity to wheel and deal.

Joe is survived by his wife of 33 years, Wanda, his son Joseph “Craig,” (wife Amber), stepchildren Kay, Wanda (husband Bob), Keith (wife Diane), Curtiss (wife Carlota), and many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brothers James, Jesse, Ray, Arvis, and Fred. Reverend J.B. Shoumaker of Bellview Assembly of God will be conducting a small graveside service for Joe on Tuesday, August 9th at 10:00 AM at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.

John S. Kulback, Jr.

John S. Kulback, Jr. passed away on August 1, 2022, at his home in Cantonment, Florida. He was well over 97 years old.

John was born in Jersey City, N.J. January 20, 1925, to John and Mary Kulback. Both of his parents were immigrants from Slovakia. John also had two siblings: Irene and Joan.

After high school John served in the U.S. Army. He graduated from the Parachute School at Ft. Benning, G.A. and was then a paratrooper, expert rifleman, and communications man during WWII. He was such a proficient marksman, that he frequently would win passes from his base or encampment. He actively served in the Pacific theatre including the Philippine jungles and during the occupation of Japan by U.S. forces. John was honorably discharged in February 1946 at Ft Dix, New Jersey. He received the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and WWII Victory medal. He was one of the true heroes of WWII who fought to the war’s end and helped preserve our freedoms. He was proud to be born in the United States and partake in the “American Experiment.”

In 1951 John married Dolores Gunza of Paterson, New Jersey. After they wed, they lived in Paterson, New Jersey for a few years. Then they purchased a home in the quiet New Jersey suburban town of Waldwick. There they raised three children: Heidi, Cindy, and Kevin.

John always showed a strong work ethic and persistence in whatever he took on. He always worked diligently to provide for his wife and children and was a true family man. He worked in a number of occupations and completed some college-level training, including coursework in supermarket operations through Cornell University. Eventually he achieved the position of food and meat buyer at the corporate level for Grand Union Supermarkets in Wayne, New Jersey.

In 1994 he and his wife moved to Cantonment, Florida from New Jersey, after retiring a few years earlier. John enjoyed BBQ’s, an occasional fishing trip, reading, traveling, and spending time with his family.

John is preceded in death by his wife Dolores. Survived are his three adult children, two grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and his sister Joan Fenton. A visitation and memorial service will be held Monday August 15 at 10 a.m. at Family Funeral and Cremation on Davis Highway in Pensacola. The remains of John and Dolores Kulback will be placed at Fort Barrancas National Cemetery after a service (which is to be determined).

Rudolph “Rudy” Emory Bridges

Rudy Bridges, a resident of Cantonment, Florida, after an extended illness, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Monday, August 1, 2022.

He was born on September 23, 1952 in Jacksonville, Florida. He spent his childhood fishing the waters of Ammonia Lake and Apalachicola River and hunting the area around Blountstown, Florida. He made a lifelong career providing for his family as an electrician, which took him many places throughout the U.S. It wasn’t unusual to find Rudy playing his guitar, tinkering with something, reading a book, or hunting but most of his free time was spent fishing and he didn’t leave many puddles big enough to hold a fish unexplored.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph Lionel Bridges and Helen Jo Ganey, son, Jeremy Bridges, and granddaughter, Bristol Lynn English.

To carry his memory and selfless spirit forward, he is survived by his wife of 37 years, Diane, sons, Kenneth & Rebecca Bass, Kevin & Shelly Bass, daughters, Valerie (Bridges) & Tony English, Brittany (Bridges) & Micheal Harris, sister, Christine (Bridges) & Randy Cash, brother, Darrin & Adonna Bridges, three nephews, a niece, and eight grandchildren.

Services will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North followed by internment at Pensacola Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be prior to service from 10-11 a.m.. Pallbearers will be Kevin Bass, Darrin Bridges, Bradley Bridges, Alex Chambers, Ben Price and Kyle Salter. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Bass, Tony English, Micheal Harris and Jody Chambers.

Frances Ardell “Dell” Woodfin

Frances Ardell “Dell” Woodfin resident of Cantonment, Florida passed away on Monday, August 1, 2022 at the age of 89. Dell was born on March 2, 1933 in Castleberry, Alabama to the late John E. Smith and Sally Belle Smith. She loved to travel, read, going out to lunch and visiting friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William Sanders; daughter, Suzanne J. Graybeal; and her parents.

Dell is survived by her brother-in-law, John (Pansy) Sanders; nephews, Gerald W. Sanders and Terry Sanders; grandson, Dekota Graybeal; son, Billy Wayne Clifton; many other grandchildren; and her special pet, BeBe.
Graveside services will be held at 2PM on Thursday, August 4, 2022 at Pensacola Memorial Gardens Cemetery Pastor Bill Flannigan officiating.

The family will receive friends from 12Noon to 1PM prior to graveside at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North.

Pallbearers will be Dekota Graybeal, Terry Graybeal, Terry Sanders and Gerald Sanders.

Rockford McGilbert Peebles

August 2, 2022

Rockford McGilbert Peebles passed away peacefully on July 29, 2022 at his home in Walnut Hill at the age of 62.

Rocky graduated for J.M. Tate High School class of 1978. He worked for 18 years at International Paper in the Jordan room. After his machine was shutdown, He worked at Escambia County Roads and Bridges department for 16 years. He enjoyed driving the heavy equipment especially “his” bulldozer, which was his favorite. He enjoyed watching, The Weather Channel, Nascar, fishing, hunting and quiet evenings on the back porch.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Justine Peebles.

To cherish his memory, he left behind his wife of 30 years, Bonnie; daughters, Brandie (Robert) Ratcliff, Kristy (Rusty) Hunt, and seven grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, August 5, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Faith Funeral Home North. Visitation will be prior to service from 10-11 a.m.

David Lee Neff

August 2, 2022

David Lee Neff, age 61, of Atmore, AL passed away on July 29, 2022 at his residence. He was born February 9, 1961 in Pueblo, CO to John W. and Ann Tucker Neff. He received his degree from the Colorado State University and worked as an Electrical Engineer most of his life. David was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Atmore. He enjoyed many hobbies which included scuba diving, woodworking, cross country skiing and downhill skiing, tennis, camping, golf, archery, marksmen competition, elk hunting and fishing. He was a lifetime member of National Rifle Association.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Eric Neff.

He is survived by his wife, Christy Burkett Neff; daughter, Lisa Neff (Matt) Butters of Atlanta, GA and grandson, Charlie Roy Butters.

A celebration of life service was held Sunday, July 29, 2022 at the Neff’s residence.
