Dean Carlton Harris

October 22, 2021

Dean Carlton Harris was born on August 31, 1962, in Pensacola, FL. He traveled to be in the presence of God on October 19, 2021 from his home in Cantonment, FL. Dean married his soul mate and love of his life, Georgette Harris on August 8, 1987. Together they had two beautiful children, Brandon and Mariena, who later gave Dean a second son (in law) Mike Kight.

Dean grew up in the Farm Hill community with a large family of cousins, who along with his best friend Bob Baggett, he considered his brothers and sisters. Dean was an active youngster playing baseball at the Cantonment Ballpark where he held the record for the most home runs in many age brackets. A few of which are still unbroken. When Dean started driving, everything else in his world stopped. He then discovered his true passion of deer hunting which quickly took all of his attention.

Dean and Bob traveled many of miles and spent many of hours in the woods. They were always searching for their next run to let their dogs out on, in hopes to score their next trophy buck to brag about. Dean was a life-long member of Bell Fountain Hunting Club, Barrineau Park Hunting Club and Becks Lake Hunting Club until those clubs were respectively dissolved. He was also a member of Nims Fork Hunting Club and a founding member of Turkey Flat Hunting Club. In most recent years, his favorite hunting spots, which included running dogs, was in Blackwater with many of his good friends and his son Brandon. He was also a co-leaser of property in Alabama with his long-time friend Toby Thompson.

Dean was a 32nd degree Master Mason of the Scottish Rite and a past member of the Cantonment Lodge #322. He was also a member of Farm Hill United Methodist Church. Dean was a Christian and loved his Lord and Savior. On October 5, 2021, Dean rededicated his life to the Lord and was baptized at his favorite spot, his race car shop in his backyard.

Though Dean was happiest in the woods, he was also an avid race fan. Dean drove his own race car for a few years. He supported and worked on Bob’s race cars for a lot of years, as well as another life-long friend Bill Campbell. When Dean’s own pride and joy Brandon was old enough to see over the steering wheel, Dean, Bob, and Bill got to work and built Brandon his first race car which he won many-many races in at a young age. Then after years of her asking and waiting, Dean reluctantly built his baby girl, Mariena her first race car. She was able to win a race and finally join her brother and Daddy in their passion for racing and building cars.

Dean was a great friend to many and would help anyone that needed help. He has many-many close friends some of whom he has been friends with since grade school. Dean also made friends along the way through jobs that he has held. He worked for many years in construction building houses then moved on to industrial construction working for Fluor Daniels and Mansfield, just to name a few.

Dean went to work for Escambia County Road Department in 1994 working as an equipment operator. In 1997 he became a Correctional Officer and worked for the Escambia County Road Prison until his retirement in June 2018.

Until the final breath I take, you will be living in my heart.

Dorothy Daniels Lister

October 14, 2021

Illustrious dancer and teacher Ms. Dorothy Daniels Lister, age 87, was lifted into the Lord’s embrace on Monday October 11, 2021, to dance with the angels.

Ms. Lister, a native Pensacolian and Pensacola High 1952 alumni, was head majorette in the PHS Marching Band. She developed her love of dance at age 4 from mentor Elvie DeMarko. After graduation she left home to study ballet in New York, where in 1954 she became a member and then soloist of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo appearing in ballets such as Swan Lake, Scheherazade, and Firebird. She traveled by bus with the company until 1958 when she married William W. Lister, a French Horn player with the orchestra. Making their home in NYC, she continued to dance with the Radio City Music Hall’s Corps de ballet, home of the famed Rockettes. She briefly returned home to Pensacola for the birth of daughter Cynthia in 1961.

Embarking on what was to become a six-decade long career in teaching dance, Miss Dorothy as she is so fondly referred to by her students, began at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Kingsboro College of the Performing Arts in 1965. She then progressed on to being head of the children’s department at the Joffrey Ballet School where she spent over 25 years. With her return to Pensacola in 1996 she instructed at Kaleidoscope (Pensacola Ballet). In 1998, she became Ballet Mistress with Northwest Florida Ballet staging ballets such as Giselle, Les Sylphides, Paquita, Swan Lake, and Coppelia, rehearsing the children for Nutcracker, teaching class, and sewing costumes. With her love of musical theatre and marching bands, she enjoyed choreographing musicals and rehearsing color guard for Tate High School with her sister as assistant. Her musical theater credits, just to name a few, include “George M,” “Here’s Where I Belong”, “Sweet Charity,” “Pajama Game”, “Dames at Sea”, South Pacific”, Fiddler on the Roof”, “Carousel” and “The King and I”. At the age of 44, she performed one final encore on Broadway in “Ballroom” by Michael Bennett.

Dorothy was also an author penning Conversations with Choreographers co-written with Svetlana McLee Grody. They interviewed well-known choreographers such as Michael Bennett, Tommy Tune, and Hermes Pan. She recorded her own ballet instruction videos featuring her children’s dance syllabus and appeared in the children’s book Going To My Ballet Class. She is also featured in numerous publications including Dance Teacher Now, Backstage, Emerald Coast, and the Pensacola News Journal. In 2004, she pursued another lifelong dream of hers by starting Dorothy’s Dance Plus, LLC. which she operated for 10 years having the slogan “Ballet for Those Who Try”. Upon closing her studio above Elebash’s in downtown Pensacola, she joined Emerald Coast Dance Conservatory in 2015, teaching her last classes this summer for NWFB and ECDC.

Miss Dorothy believed that everyone possessed the gift of dance within them, and steadfastly expressed her philosophy. “For each child, Dance belongs to them…no one can do it for them. They gain a respect for learning, and a respect for discipline, they develop better coordination and a confidence that will serve them no matter what they do later in life”. Just ask the hundreds of students whose lives have been changed for the better because of dancing.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. James Palace and MaeBelle Gray Daniels, and husband, William W. Lister.

She is survived by her only daughter, Dr. Cynthia M. Dobek (Donald); sister, Beverly D. Reinschmidt; granddaughter, Deanna M. Sikorski (Jason); grandson, Michael G. Dobek (Andrea); and great granddaughters, Maybelle J. M. Sikorski, and Madalynn W. Dobek; nephew, Dr. Todd Stalnaker (Jocquilyn) and niece, Diane Stalnaker Charles (John).
