UPDATED: Man That Shot At Deputies Now In Custody; He Was Found With Multiple Gunshot Wounds

August 28, 2020

UPDATE: Tyler Edwards Brooks is now in custody.

He was discovered in the woods near the Perdido River. Brooks had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported alive to a local hospital.

“He wasn’t in any position to resist,” Sheriff David Morgan said. There were no injuries to law enforcement.

He was located by a tracking beagle named Shorty from the Escambia County Road Camp.

The officer involved shooting will be investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, as is standard procedure.

Previous story:

Authorities are searching for a man that alleged shot at deputies before running into the woods Friday afternoon.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office was attempting to serve a warrant for battery on a law enforcement officer at a residence near Saufley Field when the suspect opened fire at deputies with a long gun. No deputies were injured, but the ECSO was not sure if the suspect may have been struck by gunfire.

The suspect, identified as as 30-year old Tyler Edwards Brooks then ran into a large wooded area  with the weapon.

Escambia Sheriff David Morgan said there was a considerable amount of gunfire in running gun battle. He said Brooks may have a stash of weapons in the wooded area.

“This is a very dangerous individual,” Chief Deputy Chip Simmons said. “We have every reason to believe he is extremely dangerous. Do not approach him yourself.”

A manhunt involving the ECSO, the ECSO SWAT team, Pensacola Police, FWC, Florida Highway Patrol, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals and other agencies was underway for Brooks.

The sheriff had a message for Brooks.

“We strongly encourage you to surrender,” Morgan said during a press conference live streamed on social media. “No one needs to get hurt…no one has been injured; no one has been killed. “We strongly encourage you to surrender.”

Brooks was described as a while male with long hair that was wearing a gray shirt. He is considered armed and dangerous. Authorities are asking residents of the area around Saufley Pines Road and Matthews Junction to stay indoors. Multiple roads in the area are closed.

In April, he was arrested on charges that included aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery on a law enforcement office and resisting officers. According to an arrest report, he had a knife and threatened to kill his mother. He reportedly pushed a deputy to the ground, striking him several times in the face with and head, and later kicked him in the chest.
