Driver Killed In Single Vehicle Nine Mile Road Crash

An Escambia County man was killed in a single vehicle crash Wednesday night on Nine Mile Road.

The 45-year old was traveling east on Nine Mile Road in a white Chevrolet Camaro when he lost control near Tower Ridge Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, ejecting the man. The vehicle came to rest in a wooded area on the south side of the road.

The man was pronounced deceased on the scene by Escambia County EMS. Troopers said he was not wearing a seat belt.

Escambia Tax Collector Marcus Pointe Office Back Open

After being down for most of a week due to a cut fiber optic cable, the Escambia County Tax Collector Marcus Pointe Office is back up and running.

Last Friday, a truck hit a poke and pulled down a fiber line that supports the office. Wednesday night, Escambia County Tax Collector Scott Lunsford said repairs and complete and office will be open Thursday.

All other office remained open during the period.

Escambia Animal Shelter Is Full, And They Are Offering Reduced Adoption Rates For Dogs And Cats

The Escambia County Animal Shelter is full, and reduced adoption rates are in place to help you find that perfect friend.

“We have a lot of great cats and dogs available,” said Animal Services Manger John Robinson. “You can find that perfect one.”

For now, the adoption fee is $25 dogs and $10 for cats. An $11 licensing fee also applies for Escambia County residents.

The shelter is open from noon until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 11 until 4 on Saturdays at 200 West Fairfield Drive. Walk-ins are welcome to see the animals, but an appointment might be necessary for adoption services.

Local COVID-19 Hospitalizations Fall Below 100

CoVID-19 hospitalizations in Escambia County are continuing to decline, falling before 100 Wednesday for the first time in weeks.

As of October 6, there were 96 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Ascension Sacred Heart, Baptist and West Florida hospitals. One month ago, that number was 330.

The numbers in the graph indicate daily hospitalizations in Escambia County and are provided daily by Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital, Baptist Hospital and West Florida Hospital. The daily numbers are not cumulative.

Byrneville Elementary Fall Festival, Basket Auction Is Friday

The Byrneville Elementary School PTO Fall Festival will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the school.

The event will include hayrides, a bake sale, haunted house, jump house, food, games, and vendors.

The annual themed basket auction will take place at 7 p.m.

Retirement Party Held For ESCO K-9s Nero And Axel

A retirement party was held Thursday for two Escambia County Sheriff’s Office K-9s.

K-9 Nero and K-9 Axel enjoyed their last day of work with pet-friendly cakes and jars of treats from Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons.

Tate High Released Early Due To Water Main Break

Tate High School released students a bit early this afternoon due to no water on campus.

A contractor hit a water main about 12:30 p.m., according to the Escambia County School District.

Spokesperson Cody Strother said the contractor, the school district and ECUA all worked to make repairs as quickly as possible, but the process was taking longer than expected.

The district anticipates repairs will be completed today, and school will be in session on Thursday.

FHP: Cantonment Man Charged After Highway 29 Wreck; His Passenger Seriously Injured

A Cantonment man was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol after a wreck on Highway 29 Tuesday night.

FHP said 26-year old Manuel De Jesus Hernandez Lopez of Cantonment was traveling north on Highway 29 about 6:15 p.m. when he attempted to make a turn across oncoming traffic to Tate School Road. Troopers said he failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic and turned into the path of a pickup truck driven by 65-year old Milton man.

A 34-year Cantonment man that was a passenger in the van was ejected in the resulting crash. He was transported by Escambia County EMS to Sacred Heart Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Lopez was charged with driving without a license. He remained in the Escambia County Jail Wednesday afternoon with bond set at $500.

Daytime Paid Crew Now Staffing The Beulah Fire Station

Paid career firefighters are now staffing the Beulah Fire Station weekdays to supplement volunteers.

The paid crew will staff the “Station 2″ from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, providing coverage during a time frame that most of Beulah’s volunteer firefighters are at work. The volunteers will continue to respond nights and weekends.

“I’m excited and happy for the community. It’s been a long time coming in a growing area,” District 1 Commissioner Jeff Bergosh told NorthEscambia.com Tuesday. “There is a very robust volunteer staff at Beulah, but most of them have jobs during the day.”

Bergosh said he is also looking forward to the upcoming construction of a new fire station for Beulah.

He said the design is complete, and the construction project is expected to go out to bid in about four months on what will be a state of the art facility. While construction costs have risen in recent months, building the station is currently estimated to have a $4 million to $4.5 million price tag.

The Century Station of Escambia Fire Rescue also has a paid firefighter crew on duty from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Lt. Jacob Meligan (pictured far left) is also a Florida certified paramedic. As the company officer, he is responsible for the daily operations and personnel assigned. Meligan started out as a volunteer with ECFR and was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant with 13 years of service.

Firefighter Michael Rozo (pictured middle) has been with the department for over two years.

Firefighter Chris French (second from right) is a certified Florida EMT and serves as the apparatus driver/operator. He started as an ECFR volunteer and now has almost 22 years of service.

Assistant District Chief Yoshimi Core (far right) spent time this week to assist the crew in getting acclimated to their new assignment. Core has spent all of his time at Escambia Fire Rescue serving at the Beulah Fire Station.

Cantonment Man Accused Of Abusing Elderly Person, Battery of His Girlfriend

A Cantonment man is accused of abusing an elderly person and the battery of his girlfriend.

Joseph Terry Jones, 35, was booked into the Escambia County Jail on charges of abuse of an elderly person domestic violence and battery domestic violence.

Jones is accused of getting into an altercation on the back deck of a home with his live-in girlfriend who was “begging for mercy and for someone to get him off of her”, an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office report states. Jones then got into “tussle” with an elderly person in the house, punching them in the face three or four times, the report continues.

Jones was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $30,000 bond.
