Jay Downs Northview 5-0 For District Baseball Championship

After four-and-a-half scoreless innings, the Jay Royals had five runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-0 District 1-1A championship win over the Northview Chiefs.

Jackson Bridges went six innings for the Chiefs, giving up five runs and six hits while striking out two and walking two.

Landon Golden earned the win for the Royals, surrendering three hits and no runs in seven innings, recording six strikeouts, and walking none.

Robbie Bodiford, Brady Smith, and Jase Portwood each had a hit for Northview.

Ethan McDonald went 2- with two RBIs and a run to lead the Royals at the Plate.

Pace Takes District Softball Crown With Win Over Tate (With Gallery)

The Pace Patriots won the District 1-6A championship with a 16-0 shutout of the Tate Lady Aggies Thursday in Pace.

The Aggies just could not recover after the Patriots had 13 runs on nine hits in the second inning.

Kata Balagbagan took the loss for Tate. She went one inning, surrendering two hits and three runs while striking out one and walking none. Jordan Smith pitched two thirds of an inning, giving up eight hits and 11 runs while walking two and striking out zero. Peyton Womack went for one-third of an inning in the circle, giving up two hits and three runs while walking three.

Wahoos Kept Quiet In 6-1 Loss to Braves

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night, falling 6-1 to the Mississippi Braves.

Hurston Waldrep (W, 1-3) earned his first professional win, scattering four hits over 5.2 innings and allowing only an unearned run. Atlanta’s top pitching prospect, who allowed seven runs on 11 hits to the Blue Wahoos in his season debut last month, fanned five and walked only one.

After three scoreless innings, Pensacola starter Valente Bellozo (L, 1-2) allowed a pair of runs in the fourth on RBI singles to Bryson Horne and Cal Conley. A fielding error and Dalvy Rosario RBI single in the top of the fifth helped the Blue Wahoos draw to within a run, but the Braves answered back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Drake Baldwin RBI single and Bellozo wild pitch to take a 4-1 lead.

Jonathan Hughes entered in the sixth and helped the Braves escape a jam, ultimately pitching 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Brandon Parker added an RBI double and Cade Bunnell hit an RBI single in the eighth off Lincoln Henzman to stretch the Mississippi lead to 6-1 before Parker Dunshee finished the game with three strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Jacob Berry was a bright spot for the Blue Wahoos, going 2-for-4 with a single, double and a deep flyout.

The Blue Wahoos continue their series against the Braves on Friday evening. First pitch from Trustmark Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Sawmill Day Festival And Car Show Is Saturday In Century

The annual Sawmill Day Festival and Car Show will be held Saturday in Century from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Car show awards will be at 3 p.m.

The free event will be held in the historic district at the corner of 4th Street and Jefferson Avenue.

The day will feature live entertainment, food, crafts, contests and prizes, museum tours, exhibits and more.

Century Fails To Test Drinking Water For Cyanide, Organic Compounds For Entire Year, DEP Says

The Town of Century failed to properly monitor their water system for several compounds for an entire year, according to a warning letter from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

According to an April 24 letter to Mayor Luis Gomez, Jr., Century failed to test for inorganic cyanide, secondary color, secondary foaming agents, and all synthetic organic compounds for the 2023 monitoring period.

Century will now be required to issue a public notice to water customers advising them of the missed sampling within 90 days and respond to the allegation within 15 days.

“Violations of Florida Statutes or administrative rules may result in liability for damages and restoration, and the judicial imposition of civil penalties,”  the DEP letter states. “This Warning Letter is part of an agency investigation, preliminary to agency action in accordance to (Florida statutes.)”

Cantonment Man Charged With Punching Woman, Hitting Her With Space Heater

A Cantonment man is accused of punching a woman before striking her on the head with a space heater.

Jeffery Jermaine Purifoy was charged with felony aggravated battery.

He allegedly hit a woman in the mouth with a closed fist before slamming a space heater onto her head while she was “balled up on the ground”, according to an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office report.

Deputies noted in their report that the woman suffered obvious injuries but refused EMS.

Purifoy remained in the Escambia County Jail Thursday morning with a U.S. Marshals Service hold.

ECSO Closes Down Another ‘Drug House’, Makes Arrest

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office says they have closed another drug house.

The ECSO Narcotics Unit, SWAT Team, and K-9 Unit served two search warrants in the 1300 block of Foxborough Drive near the Scenic Hills Country Club and the 900 block of Belair Road.

During the searches, deputies reported finding 565 grams of fentanyl, 379 grams of methamphetamine, six grams of marijuana, eight firearms (two were stolen), a Nissan 350z, and over $12,000 in cash.

Ty Savien Preyer was charged with trafficking in fentanyl, trafficking in methamphetamine, dealing in stolen property, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He remained in the Escambia County Jail with bond set at $302,000.

Flomaton Police Chief Submits Resignation

Flomaton Police Chief Dane NeSmith has submitted his resignation.

His last day on the job will be May 30.

NeSmith was hired by the Flomaton Police Department in March 2021 and was named chief in October 2022 after the resignation of then-chief Chace Thompson.

The town is accepting applications for their next police chief through 4 p.m. on May 14.

Wine Homers As Tate Beats Milton 6-3 In District Semi-Finals

The No. 3 seed Tate Lady Aggies beat the No. 2 Milton Panthers 6-3 in the District 1-6A semi-finals Wednesday night.

The Aggies were first on the board in the top of the first inning after Kara Win tripled and Amburleigh Laird had a sacrifice bunt, both scoring one run.

In the bottom of the third, a homer from Milton’s Kayal Willis tied the game at two.

Tate regained the lead at 3-2 in the top of the fifth when Wine smacked a solo home run to centerfield.

Jordan Smith earned the win for the Tate Lady Aggies, giving up five hits and three run in seven innings while striking out three and walking one.

Wine and Laird had two hits each to lead Tate at bat. Peyton Womack, Lacy Wilson, Blakely Campbell and Tristen Showalter each recorded on hit.

Tate (15-10 will take on No. 1 seed Pace (22-2) for the district championship at 6 p.m. Thursday in Pace.
