Wahoos Start Final Road Trip With Win Over Barons

September 4, 2024

written by Erik Bremer

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos began their final road trip of the regular season with a bang on Tuesday night, riding a four-run first inning to a 5-1 win over the Birmingham Barons.

Paul McIntosh blasted a three-run homer, his third long ball in the past three games, to cap the four-run first inning. Luis Palacios (W, 9-7) handled the rest, working 5.1 innings of one-run ball for his 19th career Blue Wahoos win to tie a career franchise record.

The first batter of the game, Andrew Pintar, reached on a missed catch error from Barons first baseman Shawn Goosenberg and scored on a Graham Pauley sacrifice fly. With two outs and two on in the inning, McIntosh launched his homer off the left field videoboard for a 4-0 Pensacola lead.

All four runs were unearned for Barons starter Riley Gowens (L, 1-3), who was handed the tough-luck loss.

The Barons got a run back in the first inning when Rikuu Nishida singled and scored on a wild pitch in his Double-A debut. That was all Palacios would allow, pitching into the sixth inning for his first winning decision since late July.

The Blue Wahoos added an insurance run in the sixth on a Johnny Olmstead RBI triple, and relievers Matt Pushard, Chandler Jozwiak and Dale Stanavich combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to close out the win.

The Blue Wahoos gained a half game on Biloxi and a full game on Mississippi in the chase for a potential Southern League wild card spot. With 11 games remaining, they are 3.5 games back of the Shuckers and 2.5 games behind the Braves.

The series continues Wednesday in Birmingham, with a 7:00 CT.

Nine Mile Road Dodge’s Convenience Store Shut Down Suddenly Tuesday

September 3, 2024

The Dodge’s Southern Style convenience store on East Nine Mile Road closed suddenly Tuesday morning.

All signage and branding were removed from the store, the parking lot was closed off, and vendors were apparently removing their products from the building.

NorthEscambia.com reached out to the company’s home office in Tupelo, Mississippi. We were told they would not make any comment to the media by a representative that then hung up the phone.

The Pensacola location of Dodge’s has been removed from the company’s website, and a Facebook page for the location says it is permanently closed. “Store Closed” signs were also posted at the entrance.

In response to a Facebook question we posted, the company confirmed, “…we are closing our Pensacola location.”

The location was constructed in 2001, according to Escambia County tax records.

Victor Jerome Jenkins, 55, was charged with possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a concealed weapon by a convicted felon.

A deputy patrolling the area of West Michigan Avenue and Armenia Drive stopped Jenkins as he was riding his bicycle about 2:09 a.m. on August 22 with no red light on the rear of the bicycle. A records check indicated that he had an outstanding warrant from Santa Rosa County.

A search of Jenkins revealed a white substance in his backpack that field tested positive for methamphetamine and two concealed fixed bladed daggers. Deputies also reported finding a glass smoking pipe on Jenkins’ vest pocket.

Jenkins was also given a verbal warning for no visible red light attached to the rear of his bicycle.

Victor remained in the Escambia County Jail Tuesday morning with bond set at $16,000.

House Makeover: Molino Fire Station Edition

September 3, 2024

Call a house makeover, Molino Fire Station edition.

As we recently reported, career fighters are now staffing the Molino Fire Station 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That means they are working, eating, sleeping, and just hanging out between calls at the Molino Fire Station.

Now that crews are living in the station, it’s undergoing a bit of a makeover. We stopped by and took an impromptu tour recently with Escambia County Fire Rescue Chief Adam Harrison and Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore. It’s only fair to note that what you see in these photos depicts a real working fire station. The firefighters did not have a chance to “straighten up” for visitors in advance.

There’s still painting to be done, a new Viking stove will be installed, and other working and aesthetic upgrades will take place.

The Molino Fire Station was constructed as a volunteer firehouse. Molino is now what is known as combination department –volunteers would still respond to calls alongside the paid crews.
