Byrneville Elementary Students Create Winning EREC Meeting Posters

Fifth graders at Byrneville Elementary School took part in a poster contest to promote Escambia River Electric Cooperative’s Annual Meeting.
The winning students received a cash award, and their posters were displayed at the meeting.

Florida Gas Prices Rebound

Florida gas prices rebounded over the weekend, returning to the highest price in over a month.
Sunday’s state average was $4.20 per gallon, an increase of two cents from a week ago.
The average price per gallon in Escambia County was $4.11, putting Pensacola at the lowest metro price average in the state.
The lowest price to be found Sunday night in North Escambia was $3.99 at three stations in Cantonment. In Pensacola, prices were as low as $3.95.
“There were some noteworthy gains in both oil and gasoline futures last week, which could result in additional gains in prices at the pump this week,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Oil prices rose last week after the European Union announced plans to phase out their use of Russian oil by the end of the year. And yet, the oil price gains paled in comparison to what happened with gasoline. Gasoline futures soared to a new record high last week. The increase is blamed on a combination of steady weekly declines in gasoline supplies, and expectations that summer fuel demand will far outpace what we saw last year.”

NEP Teams Place In Mid-Season Tournament

NEP Softball placed seven teams in the top three of their division in the recent GCGSA Mid-Season Tournament.
Blue Angels took the top award, winning the 10U A bracket scoring 23 runs while giving up just three runs.

M-Braves Top Blue Wahoos, End Series With Split

Jeff Lindgren delivered a quality start in his 2022 Pensacola Blue Wahoos debut, but a four-run seventh gave the Mississippi Braves a 6-3 win in Sunday’s series finale.
The Blue Wahoos will settle for a series split and a 6-6 road trip as they return home to Pensacola with a 12-15 record.
It was a pitchers’ duel early, as neither Lindgren nor M-Braves starter Darius Vines allowed a hit through three innings. Luke Waddell broke the ice in the fourth with a two-run homer to give Mississippi a 2-0 lead, and the Blue Wahoos didn’t manage a baserunner until a Luis Aviles Jr. double in the sixth.
Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, the Blue Wahoos got a big three-run homer from Griffin Conine to take a brief 3-2 lead. Tyler Ferguson (W, 1-0) stranded a runner at third base to prevent further damage, and Mississippi took advantage of a Hayden Cantrelle error to score four unearned runs against Josh Roberson (L, 0-1) in the bottom half of the inning. Andrew Moritz tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single from Riley Delgado and a two-run triple from Justin Dean put the Braves back in front.
Indigo Diaz (S, 2) walked and hit a batter in the ninth, but struck out Bubba Hollins as the potential tying run to end the game.
After an off day on Monday, the Blue Wahoos return home for a six-game series against the Rocket City Trash Pandas on Tuesday.

Missing Man Found; Senior Alert Canceled

UPDATE: LEO DOIDGE HAS BEEN SAFELY LOCATED.
A Florida Silver Alert has been issued for a missing Escambia County.
Leo Edward Doidge, 74, was last seen about 8 a.m. Sunday in the 900 block of Springmier Place, east of Chemstrand Road. He was wearing a gray pullover with a white collar and blue jeans, and he may be wearing glasses.
He may be traveling in a 2010, green Honda CRV FL tag number NXVZ53. Authorities said he may now be in Alabama.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 436-9620.
Boil Water Notice Issued For Cedar Tree Lane, Phalrose Lane, Cooley Road

UPDATE: THIS BOIL WATER NOTICE WAS LIFTED ON MONDAY, MAY 11.
Cottage Hill Water Works has issued a precautionary boil water notice for Cedar Tree Lane, Phalrose Lane and Cooley Road following a water main break.
The precautionary boil water notice is due to a water main repair in the area.
The utility is advising, as a precaution, that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing dishes be boiled. A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient. As an alternative bottled water may be used.
This precautionary boil water notice will remain in effect until the problem has been corrected and bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink.
Regional Baseball, Softball Playoff Games Announced For Tate, Northview

Regional playoff baseball and softball schedules have been announced.
6A Baseball
In 6A baseball, No. 1 seed Pace will host No. 8 Forest (Ocala), and No. 5 Tate will travel to First Coast (Jacksonville). Both games are at 7 p.m. Tuesday with the winners meeting on May 13 in the regional seminfinal.
1A Baseball
In 1A baseball, No. 1 seed Holmes County will host No. 4 Jay, and No. 2 Northview will host #3 Paxton. Both games will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10. The winners will play in the regional final on May 13.
1A Softball
In 1A softball, No. 1 seed Jay will host No. 4 Northview and No. 2 Holmes County will host Paxton on Thursday, May 12 in the regional semifinal. The winning teams will meat in the regional final on May 17.

Sawmill Day Festival And Car Show Returns To Century

After a two year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Sawmill Day Festival and Car Show returned to Century Saturday.
The day included entertainment, free history museum tours, grilled hamburger meals, crafts, free exhibits, a car show and more.

Traffic Alert: This Week’s List Of Construction Slow Down Spots

Drivers will encounter traffic disruptions on the following state roads in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties as crews perform construction and maintenance activities.
Escambia County:
- U.S. 98 Pensacola Bay Bridge Replacement – Drivers will encounter alternating lane closures and lane shifts on the Pensacola Bay Bridge from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, May 8 through Saturday, May 14. On Tuesday, May 10, U.S. 98 westbound (Gulf Breeze to Pensacola) will have lane closures beginning at 10 p.m. due to Bands on the Beach. Crews will be using lanes on the current bridge as a platform to pour concrete decks for the westbound (Gulf Breeze to Pensacola) structure.
- West Cervantes Street (U.S. 90) Pedestrian Safety Improvement – Motorists traveling on West Cervantes Street, between A Street and Pace Boulevard, will encounter the following traffic impacts from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night:
- Single lane closures and shifts as crews perform median improvements, signalization installation, construct curb and gutter, sidewalks, and utility adjustments.
- Alternating lane closures and shifts for paving work.
- North Ninth Avenue (State Road (S.R.) 289) Carpenters Creek Bridge Replacement- All travel lanes are temporarily shifted to the southbound side of the bridge as crews construct the northbound portion. Additionally, drivers may encounter intermittent temporary lane closures from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, May 9 through Friday, May 13, as crews mobilize materials and equipment.
- Sorrento Road (S.R. 292) Intersection Improvements at Innerarity Point (County Road 292A) – Motorists can expect intermittent daytime shoulder closures the week of Monday, May 9.
- Airport Boulevard (S.R. 750) Routine Maintenance from West of Palafox Street to Davis Highway – Drivers will encounter alternating lane closures from west of Palafox Street to Davis Highway from 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. the week of Monday, May 9 as crews perform paving operations.
- Pace Boulevard, from Barrancas Avenue to Massachusetts Avenue – The northbound outside lane between Barrancas Avenue and Cervantes Street will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly as crews perform concrete work. In addition, crews will close the sidewalks on the eastern side of Pace Boulevard for sidewalk improvements. Pedestrians will be detoured to the western side of Pace Boulevard during this time
- Barrancas Avenue (S.R. 292) from Manchester Street to the Bayou Chico Bridge –The sidewalks on the northern side of Barrancas Avenue, between Manchester Avenue and Pace Boulevard, will be closed as crews work on sidewalk improvements. Detours will be in place for pedestrians in these areas.
- Pensacola Boulevard (U.S. 29) from Brent Lane to North of I-10 – Drivers will encounter alternating lane closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, May 9 through Thursday, May 12 as crews work on sidewalk and curb improvements.
- S.R. 4 Routine Bridge Maintenance at the Escambia River Bridge – Motorists will encounter intermittent east and westbound inside lane closures from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 as crews perform routine bridge maintenance.
- Brent Lane (S.R. 296) Routine Maintenance near I-110 Northbound on Ramp – Motorists will encounter intermittent lane closures from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday, May 6 and Sunday, May 8 as crews perform paving operations.
Santa Rosa County:
- Pensacola Bay Bridge (U.S. 98) Replacement – Drivers will encounter alternating lane closures and lane shifts on the Pensacola Bay Bridge from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, May 9 through Saturday, May 13. On Tuesday, May 10, U.S. 98 westbound (Gulf Breeze to Pensacola) will have lane closures beginning at 10 p.m. due to Bands on the Beach. Crews will be using lanes on the current bridge as a platform to pour concrete decks for the westbound (Gulf Breeze to Pensacola) structure.
- U.S. 98 Widening from Bayshore Road to Portside Drive – Motorists traveling westbound will encounter intermittent lane and median closures between S.R. 281 and Bayshore Road between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Monday, May 9 through Friday, May 13, while crews perform median work. In addition, westbound travelers will encounter a new traffic configuration from Ramblewood Drive to Autumn Breeze Circle as lanes will be shifted slightly south to allow for crews to perform widening activities on the outside lane.
- U.S. 98 (Navarre Parkway) Turn Lane Construction near Clay Court in Navarre – Motorists can expect intermittent lane closures near Clay Court from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 11 and Thursday, May 12 as perform paving operations.
- Avalon Boulevard (S.R. 281) Turn Lane Construction at the new Circle K in Milton – Motorists will encounter intermittent lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, May 8 through Thursday, May 12 as crews perform paving operations.
All activities are weather-dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.
