Man Accused Of Stealing Travel Trailer And Construction Trailer From Walnut Hill

March 24, 2023

A Pensacola man has been charged with the alleged theft of a travel trailer and a construction company’s trailer from Walnut Hill.

A 2018 Forest River travel trailer was reported stolen March 16 from Highway 97 just south of Ernest Ward Middle School. The same day, a 20-foot enclosed construction trailer was stolen from a business on South Highway 99 at HIghway 97,  about a half mile from where the travel trailer was stolen.

Damien Matthew Lopez, 42, was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, grand theft from $20,000 to $100,000 and grand theft from $10,000 to $20,000.

The construction trailer was valued at $15,000 and contained construction tools and equipment valued at $40,000.

A few days later, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office investigators were made aware of evidence showing a white SUV pulling the travel trailer at the intersection of Highway 29 and Highway 97. Using a tag number from the SUV, they were able to trace the vehicle to an address on Bradley Street in Pensacola.

Deputies found the enclosed trailer at the Bradley Street address. They said it was freshly painted, but the Walnut Hill business’ logo was still visible through the paint. Investigators executed a search warrant on O’Daniel Drive in Pensacola where Lopez and numerous tools belonging to the Walnut Hill company were located, according to an arrest report. Additional stolen items were recovered from an address on Highway 297A.

Lopez allegedly sold the travel trailer to another individual for $500. At last report, the travel trailer has not been recovered.

Lopez was released from the Escambia County Jail Thursday on a $30,000 bond.

Vehicle Crashes Into A Deep Ditch At The Alabama-Florida State Line

March 24, 2023

A driver crashed into a deep drainage ditch at the Alabama-Florida state line Thursday afternoon after avoiding a vehicle that pulled out in front of him.

It happened just after 4 p.m. on Highway 99 and State Line Road near Bratt. The driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee was northbound on Highway 99 in Florida when the elderly driver of another SUV failed to properly stop and pulled out from a stop sign in Florida on State Line Road. The driver of the Jeep swerved off the roadway to avoid a collision, crossing the state line into Alabama. The Jeep then collided with a utility guy wire and crashed into a deep drainage ditch.

The driver of the Jeep and his passenger were not injured.

Alabama State Troopers investigated the single vehicle crash since the only collision (between the Jeep and the guy wire and ditch) occurred in Alabama.

The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia County (FL) Fire Rescue, Escambia County (FL) EMS, Escambia County (FL) Sheriff’s Office and Atmore Police Department also responded.

All Lanes Now Open On The Pensacola Bay Bridge

March 23, 2023

All six lanes on the Pensacola Bay Bridge are now open to traffic after the opening of the third travel lane on the eastbound structure Thursday morning. With the opening of the lane, each bridge structure consists of three, 12-foot travel lanes flanked by 10-foot shoulders.

While all six travel lanes on the bridge are now open, additional work remains to complete the project. Tasks will include painting, work on the bridge’s aesthetic lighting system, completion of the wayside park area in Gulf Breeze, and completion of the shared-use path on the westbound bridge. These activities will, at times, require intermittent nighttime lane closures. Completion of the project is currently estimated for later this spring.

With a construction cost of approximately $440-million, the Pensacola Bay Bridge replacement project is the largest transportation initiative in Northwest Florida history. More than 55,000 drivers travel the bridge daily between Pensacola and Gulf Breeze. The modern, six-lane structure replaces a four-lane bridge that opened in 1960. The original bridge across the bay was a two-lane drawbridge that opened in 1931.

Century Seeks About $13 Million To Fix Bridges, Rebuild Old CHS Gym. But The Gym May Be A Problem.

March 23, 2023

The town of Century is moving forward with applications for nearly $13 million in grants to renovate an old gym and to make bridge and drainage repairs. But there are several big “ifs” on the gym project.

A $10,015,000 grant award would be used to rebuild the old Century High School gymnasium for use as a multipurpose facility that could also serve as a hurricane or other disaster shelter. Century High closed over 25 years ago; the 16,500 square foot building was constructed in 1960.

Town consultant Robin Phillips, who in managing the grant submissions, said the gym is laden with asbestos and lead. It has been essentially abandoned for years, and is in poor condition. For those reasons, Phillips said an architect is recommending that the building be demolished and rebuilt.

And the biggest problem may be the fact that the Town of Century does not own the building; it is owned by Pensacola State College. Phillips said the college would either have to be a co-applicant for the grant, or transfer ownership to the town.

The town will also seek $2,862,137 in grant money to replace a failed bridge on Freedom Road that has been closed for three years, and make drainage improvements to two other bridges that suffered embankment erosion during Hurricane Sally.

In order to score higher on their grant applications, the town council voted this week to contribute up to $7,500 of town funds per project if the grants are received.

The funding, if awarded, would be from Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Small Cities Hurricane Sally Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funding. through the Rebuild Florida Infrastructure Repair Program.
