Local Firefighter Receives Kidney Transplant After Two-Year Wait

April 27, 2023

After more than two years on the waiting list, a local firefighter has received a kidney transplant.

We first introduced our readers to Cody Green in 2021 as he anxiously awaited a kidney. He finally got the call, underwent transplant surgery last Friday, and is recovering at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

Cody is a Florida Forest Service wildland firefighter, and he is a volunteer firefighter at the Molino Station of Escambia Fire Rescue.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help Cody and his family while they are out of work during a long and extensive recovery period, according to GoFundMe.

He suffered from focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a serious condition in which scar tissue develops in parts of the kidney, and it can lead to full kidney failure.

After his diagnosis, he was at 40% kidney function, and doctors thought he would be able to live without dialysis or need of transplant until he was older in his 40s or 50s. But by mid July 2021, he was at just 7%.

Johnston Has Two Homers, Six Runs As Wahoos Beat The Biscuits

April 27, 2023

Troy Johnston tied a Blue Wahoos franchise record with two homers and six runs batted in as Pensacola defeated the Montgomery Biscuits 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

In front of a lively Education Day crowd at Riverwalk Stadium, Johnston teed off for his first two homers of the year – a two-run blast in the third and a three-run shot in the fourth – to accomplish just the third six-RBI game in franchise history, and first since Brandon Dixon achieved the feat in 2016.

Eury Pérez (W, 2-1) took the run support and ran with it, cruising through 6.0 innings of two-hit, one-run ball. The 20-year-old top prospect fanned five, securing the third quality start of his professional career.

Cody Morissette went deep on the heels of Johnston’s third-inning homer, giving the infielder his first Double-A hit and homer in his second game with the Blue Wahoos. That marked the end of the day for Biscuits starter Anthony Molina (L, 0-2), who allowed six runs while recording only six outs.

Joe Rizzo was 3-for-5 with a two-run double to open the scoring in the first before Johnston and Morissette contributed the remainder of the run-scoring hits.

Austin Roberts and Sean Reynolds completed the game for the Pensacola bullpen.

Escambia Man Gets 30 For Threatening To ‘Shoot Up’ High School

April 26, 2023

An Escambia County man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for making threats against a high school.

Freeman Quyva Lindsey was convicted of two counts of electronic threats to kill, do bodily injury, conduct a mass shooting, or conduct an act of terrorism.

The charges stem from texts, and both public posts and private messages on Facebook where Lindsey threatened to “shoot Washington High School up” in February of 2022, according to prosecutors.

Lindsey was designated a habitual felony offender by Judge Jenny Kinsey, and his 30 year sentence on this case is to run consecutive to any other sentence he is currently serving.
