Man Pinned Underneath Motorcycle

A Bratt man was injured when a motorcycle fell over on him, pinning him underneath, Sunday evening. The accident occurred at a private residence in the 4000 block of Highway 168 about 6:30 p.m. First responders from the Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue were able to quickly lift the motorcycle off the man. The price of a Pensacola Beach Public Annual Pass dropped effective today from $50 to $20.
The board’s action does not impact the ability to choose to pay the cash toll of $1 for single trips or the other Pensacola Beach Annual Pass rates. The homestead pass will remain at $5 and the commercial pass, $70. No refunds will be given for any general public annual passes purchased prior to the new fee rate effective May 1.

Prom Night Heroes Honored With Lifesaver Awards

Three young adults hailed as “prom night heroes” were honored with Woodman of the World Lifesaver Awards Sunday at Little Escambia Baptist Church in Flomaton.
In late March, they were on their way back from the W.S. Neal High School Prom when they noticed the fire. It was prom night for senior Ryley Fore, 18. He attended prom with his date, 22-year old Cheyenne Hammond and his cousin Kalanea Fore who was along to see the senior walkout.
The trio spotted the garage fire at a home on Foshee Road.
Cheyenne called 911 for help, while Ryley and Kalanea made their way inside the home to find 63-year old Marilyn Mize alone and asleep on the couch. She has limited mobility, relying on a walker and wheelchair. Ryley and Kalanea helped her out of the house using her walker, then went back to get the wheelchair to roll her to safety.
Ryley called his dad and grandfather; together they used a hose to knock down the fire in the garage.
The Lifesaver award was presented by Escambia County (AL) Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mike Lambert, Assistant Flomaton Police Chief Benny Stokes, Flomaton Fire Chief Steve Stanton and Flomaton fireman Dakota Chancery.

Driver Flees Cantonment Crash

The driver of a pickup truck apparently fled a single vehicle crash early Monday morning in Cantonment.
The accident happened about 12:40 a.m. on Well Line Road, near the entrance to the Cantonment Ballpark. There was no driver with the vehicle when first responders arrived. The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Shuckers Beat The Wahoos

Pensacola Blue Wahoos manager Pat Kelly shook up his lineup Sunday to try to squeeze more hits and runs out of it.
It seemed like it would work with Pensacola ahead of the Biloxi Shuckers, 3-2, heading into the ninth inning in front of 4,301 at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
But Blue Wahoos’ save leader Jimmy Herget blew his second chance to close out the game this season giving up a two-run double to Biloxi right fielder Clint Coulter to give the Shuckers their fourth straight win over Pensacola, 4-3.
Pensacola has now lost seven of its last eight games but still leads the South Division in the Southern League with a 14-10 record.
“We got nine hits and took the lead into the ninth,” Kelly said about his changed batting order. “We had a couple opportunities where we could have added on. “
Kelly put second baseman Josh VanMeter in the leadoff spot followed by right fielder Aristides Aquino. Shortstop Blake Trahan moved down in the order from first to sixth and third baseman Taylor Sparks batted cleanup.
The Blue Wahoos did score two runs in the first three innings to go ahead, 2-0.
In the first inning, VanMeter lead off with a double and came around to score on a double by Gabriel Guerrero whose hit landed just inside the left field foul line. VanMeter scored a second time in the third inning when he earned a leadoff walk. With the bases loaded and two outs Biloxi reliever Forrest Snow walked Trahan to force in VanMeter.
For the game, VanMeter was 2-4 with a double, walk and two runs scored and is now 8-18 or .444 in this series against Biloxi. In the two series against the Shuckers, he is 12-34 or .352.
“He’s a good hitter,” Kelly said. “In spring training, we liked the way he swung the bat. He keeps going up there and swinging the bat well.”
Biloxi rallied in the sixth inning to tie the game, 2-2, when Shuckers left fielder Dustin DeMuth doubled in third baseman Blake Allemand. Biloxi first baseman Art Charles then pulled a single to right field to score DeMuth with the tying run.
Biloxi had runners on second and third with one out in the third inning but Pensacola starter Deck McGuire, a former first-round pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2010, struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning unscathed. He ended up retiring the next eight batters in a row, striking out five.
McGuire ended up pitching six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out seven. He is 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA this season.
“He battled out there,” Kelly said. “His command was off a little bit but was aggressive and stayed after guys. He kind of ran out of gas there.”
Pensacola left fielder Angelo Gumbs had knocked in catcher Adrian Nieto in the seventh inning with the go ahead run, 3-2, when he drilled a grounder into left field.
But Biloxi came back with two runs in the ninth off Herget, who picked up his first loss and is 0-1 with eight saves. He did have two strikeouts and now has 23 in 13 innings or 15.9 Ks per nine innings.
Alabama ATV Crash Claims Life Of Cantonment Teen

An ATV accident in Alabama claimed the life of a teenage girl from Cantonment Saturday afternoon.
The single vehicle crash occurred at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, according to Alabama State Troopers, on Old Castleberry Road about 1.5 miles north of Brewton.
The 16-year old from Cantonment was killed when the 2004 Polaris ATV she was operating crash.
The teen, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital in Brewton, where she died from injuries received in the crash.
Alabama State Troopers have not released the teenage girl’s name.
Eight Navy Personnel Hit By Drunk Driver On Perdido Key

Eight Navy personnel from NAS Pensacola were injured — some with life threatening injuries — when they were struck by a vehicle Saturday night on Perdido Key in Escambia County.
The Florida Highway Patrol has arrested 56-year old Eric Duncan Watt of Pensacola for DUI in connection with the crash. He was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $40,000 bond about 8:50 Sunday morning. The FHP said additional charges could be forthcoming as their investigation continues.
The FHP said Watt was westbound on Perdido Key Drive east of River Road in a 2003 Infiniti M45 when he hit the eight pedestrians.
The injured have been identified as Jordan Lo with critical injuries; Kevin Park, Steven Parsons, Brandon Nunez, Travis Hehman and Jerome Wallar with serious injuries; Christian Martinez with minor injuries; and Christopher Martinez with no injuries.
Multiple Injuries In Crash Near Flomaton

There were no serious injuries in a two vehicle crash Saturday afternoon about 2:00 on Upper Creek Road near Wolf Log Road north of Flomaton. The Flomaton Fire Department, Century Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County (FL) EMS and Atmore Ambulance were among the responding agencies.
