December 8, 2023

The First Judicial Circuit will host a Driver License Clinic on Friday, March 15, 2024, to assist individuals whose licenses have been revoked, suspended, or canceled. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the M.C. Blanchard Judicial Building located at 190 Governmental Center in Pensacola.

Registration will begin on December 15, 2023, at 9 a.m., and is open to the first 150 registered participants. To register, go to https://escambiacountydriverlicenseclinic2024.eventbrite.com.

Registered participants should closely monitor the email address provided at registration, as email will be the primary form of communication between participants and the clinic staff. Additional information may also be requested by email. Failure to provide requested information may result in cancelled registration.

Individuals who registered for previous clinics and failed to appear will be automatically placed on the waiting list until all eligible participants have had an opportunity to register. The waiting list does not transfer to future clinics; therefore, participants will be required to re-register in order to participate in the future. Walk-ins will not be able to participate.

Staff from the Escambia County Tax Collector’s Office, Florida Department of Revenue, Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Escambia County Clerk of Court, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Office of the State Attorney, and the Office of the Public Defender, along with judges and court staff, will work together to assist registrants and provide individualized information relevant to each participant’s personal circumstances. The goal of the clinic is to provide “one-stop shopping” for citizens to interact with the appropriate state agencies and/or the court so they can determine how to regain their driving privileges. The clinic will not be able to assist individuals with licenses revoked, suspended, or cancelled due to out-of-state matters. Additionally, the clinic will not waive outstanding financial obligations or address pending criminal charges or charges for which an individual is currently on probation.

Driver licenses may be suspended for a variety of reasons, including failure to pay traffic tickets or child support, accumulation of too many points on one’s driving record, or designation as a habitual traffic offender. Licenses may also be revoked as a consequence of entering a plea to certain crimes, such as driving under the influence or certain drug-related offenses.

Water Main Break Closes Century Town Hall; Boil Water Notice Continues For Area

December 7, 2023

THIS BOIL WATER NOTCE HAS BEEN LIFTED.

The entrance to the Century Town Hall is temporarily closed due to construction excavation causing a water main to break under the sidewalk.

The Century Branch Library was also closed and a Thursday evening Santa visit canceled by the leak.

There is currently no water in town hall and no automobile access onto the property.

Water is anticipated to be restored during the night; however, the entrance to town hall is inaccessible until further notice. If water is restored, town hall will open Friday for phone calls and walk-ins from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

As a precaution, the town advises that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing dishes be boiled. A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient. as an alternative, bottled water may be used. Residents are also advised to take precautions when bathing, especially immunocompromised individuals, infants, or the elderly.

A loss in system pressure could cause backsiphonage of contaminants, such as e. coli bacteria, into the water system. water containing E. coli bacteria can be considered safe for drinking and cooking after vigorously boiling the water. Disease symptoms caused by these bacteria may include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, and possibly jaundice, and any associated headache and fatigue. epa has set an enforceable drinking water standard for e. coli to reduce the risk of these adverse health effects. under this standard all drinking water must be free of these bacteria.

The water system is currently collecting samples to determine if the presence of E.coli bacteria exists within the water system. This precautionary boil water notice will remain in effect until the problem has been corrected and a bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink. The anticipated date for rescinding this notice is December 9; this story will be updated when it is rescinded.

A Florida Highway Patrol Trooper was stopped at a red traffic light on Pensacola Boulelvardd at W Street, when he observed a newer model Nissan Altima directly in front of him with dark tinted windows. He attempted a traffic stop for the tint violation.

The driver, later identified as Antoine Vonche Booker, rapidly accelerated and swerved left towards a K9 Trooper’s vehicle who just arrived to assist with the traffic stop. The driver then swerved right into a Circle K gas station located at 7950 Pensacola Blvd. As the vehicle entered the parking lot, the trooper observed what appeared to be a Ziploc type bag with a light-colored powdery substance being tossed out of the window, and a a pursuit followed.

The driver continued traveling through the Circle K parking lot northbound at a high rate of speed towards Broad Street. By this time the K-9 Trooper became primary in the pursuit as the vehicle turned onto Pittman Ave from Broad Street. The driver continued south on Pittman Ave then east on Hope Drive. Troopers said booker then ran a posted stop sign and turned right to continue south on Palafox St. The driver continued southbound at a high rate of speed with a willful and wanton disregard for the motoring public’s safety as he continued to disobey traffic control signals, passed other innocent motorist in a no passing zone and drove on the wrong side of the roadway multiple times. The driver then continued south and attempted to turn right into the Taco Rock 29 parking lot (5454 Pensacola Blvd) where he collided with a curb, and the vehicle overturned.

Booker immediately exited the vehicle through the rear window and surrendered. He was later transported to Escambia County Jail and charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding with property damage (rental vehicle), possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of a machine gun (Glock modified to fire full-auto) and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.

Deputies went to a residence on C.W. Carraway to arrest Haden Brock Howard, 29, on two outstanding warrants for failure to appear on charges of possession of a firearm by convicted felon and as a habitual traffic offender.

They located Howard and gave him several loud commands to surrender, but he refused, according to an arrest report. He continued to fight deputies, and he was forcibly placed on the ground where he refused to comply.

“Due to Howard’s resistance, I delivered several closed fist strikes to his face and delivered a knee strike to his rib area to gain compliance,” a deputy wrote in his report. After another deputy delivered several strikes, Howard complied and was detained.
