IP Donates Headphones For Jim Allen Elementary Second Graders

International Paper recently donated 75 headphones to Jim Allen Elementary School to be used in second grade classrooms for computer-based curriculum.
“International Paper makes sustainable investments to address critical needs in the communities where employees live and work. One of our signature causes is children’s education and we want them to be able to have the right tools to succeed. When we heard there was a need for headphones for students to use while learning on computer programs, we had to help. Our administrative team members collected money, purchased and donated 75 headphones for second grade students at Jim Allen Elementary school,” said Whitney Fike, International Paper Pensacola mill communications manager.

Garden To Table Exposition Saturday At Escambia Extension Office

Escambia County Extension will hold a Garden to Table Exposition on Saturday, October 26 from 8 a.m. until noon at their office at 3740 Stefani Road in Cantonment.
The event will include information and demonstrations on bringing the autumn harvest to the table. Additional information and demonstrations will be provided by the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority, the EscaRosa Beekeepers, The Ever’man Cooperative and local poultry expert J. E. Blum.
Take A Look At The Planned I-10 At Beulah Road Interchange

The Florida Department of Transportation presented the details in on the I-10 at Beulah Road Interchange Project during a public information meeting Tuesday evening.
The project includes the widening of Beulah Road from West Nine Mile Road to Isaacs Lane, the realignment from Isaacs Lane to West Kingsfield Road, a new interchange at I-10 and the widening of I-10 from the Florida/Alabama line to the Pensacola Weigh Station.
The project encompasses an area that will see a significant amount of a future development.
As a result of planned growth, there is a need to provide connectivity from new areas of development to the surrounding regional transportation system, according to FDOT. Additionally, there is a need to provide an alternative route that will reduce travel times and congestion within the study area.
At the meeting, the initial engineering and environmental analysis were presented, and the public had the opportunity to provide comments. A public hearing will be held in 2020, and the study portion of the project will wrap up in 2021.

Northview Chiefs Ranked No. 8 In The State, No. 3 In Region

After a bye week last Friday night, the Northview Chiefs slipped to No. 3 in the region and No. 8 in the state in the latest 1A rankings released Tuesday by the Florida High School Athletic Association.
In Region 1-1A, the Chiefs are ranked behind Baker, ranked No. 1 in the state, and Vernon, ranked No. 6 in the state.
Region 1-1A rankings are as follows (listed as school, RPI, record)
- Baker .691 (8-0)
- Vernon .624 (6-2)
- Northview .606 (5-2)
- Freeport .601 (6-2)
- Jay .534 (4-4)
- Graceville .529 (5-3)
- Holmes County .451 (3-5)
- Cottondale .425 (2-6)
- Chipley .395 (1-7)
Teams are ranked based upon a RPI formula. RPI stands for Ratings Percentage Index. In short, it is a way to measure a team’s strength relative to other teams, based largely on the strength of their schedules.
Northview will face bottom-ranked Chipley this Friday night in Chipley.

ECHS Earns JV Win Over Northview On Final Play Of Game

The Escambia County High Blue Devils defeated the Northview Chiefs 24-20 Thursday night in junior varsity football action.
The Blue Devils earned the victory with the go ahead score on the final play of the game in Bratt.
It was the final game of the season for the JV Chiefs.

Pensacola Beach Sign Sold In Four Parts For $45,750 To Highest Bidders

The old Pensacola Beach sign sold at auction for a total of $45,750, plus sales tax.
The sign was sold in four separate pieces.
Jim Reeves won the starburst sign auction for $10,000 to be placed at his Pensacola Beach Rv Park. Danny Sloan, owner of Tacky’s, purchased the sailfish sign with letters for $27,000; Frisky Dolphin owner Kevin Hausfield won the sailfish sign without letters auction for $7,250. Tim Buttel of Gulf Breeze won the arrow sign for $1,500.
The funds from the Escambia County auction will help offset the cost of the new Pensacola Beach sign that was installed last month.

Four Facing Drug Charges After Search Warrant In Atmore

Four people are a facing drug charges after the Alabama Drug Enforcement Task Force, U.S. Marshals and Atmore Police served a search warrant at 517 East Oak Street in Atmore.
According to Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks, agents found numerous drug paraphernalia items, methamphetamines, heroin, marijuana and prescription pills in the residence along with four individuals.
Christian James Shenk, 48, was charged with possession of a controlled substance (meth) and possession of drug paraphernalia. Michael Wayne Barnhill, 55, was charged with possession of a controlled substance (meth), possession of drug paraphernalia and second degree possession of marijuana.
Dana Marie Harrison, 42, was charged with possession of a controlled substance (heroin), possession of drug paraphernalia and second degree possession of marijuana. And Syndle Vinson, 33, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of controlled substance (heroin) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
All four were booked into the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton with bond set at $25,000 each.
Update: Walnut Hill Crash Claims Local Man’s Life, Injures 8-Year Old Child

A single vehicle crash near Walnut Hill claimed one life and injured a child Monday night.
Clayton Joseph Cagle, age 31 of Walnut Hill, was traveling east on Pine Forest Road about a mile off Highway 97. He failed to maintain control of his 1999 GMC Yukon, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and strike a tree. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both were wearing their seat belts.
An 8-year old passenger was transported by Escambia County EMS to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The Walnut Hill and Molino stations of Escambia Fire Rescue also responded.

Century Taking Extra Steps To Ensure Sunshine Law Compliance

Century is taking additional steps to ensure compliance with Florida’s Sunshine Law after missteps led to a violation earlier this month.
As the council held a Community Redevelopment Agency and as a regular council meeting got underway Monday night, the first order of business was asking the town clerk for confirmation that the meeting were properly advertised.
Public notices advertising the meeting were distributed to the media a week in advance and were posted at locations including the front door of town hall.
Interim City Manager Buz Eddy told the council that an internal checklist was now being used by staff to insure various steps like posting notices is taking place, and staff members will sign off as tasks are completed.
Monday night’s CRA meeting was a do over of a CRA meeting held October 7 — same agenda, same discussion — because the earlier meeting violated the Sunshine Law according to Eddy.
