Mad Scientist Night At Kingsfield Elementary (With Gallery)

Thursday was Mad Scientist Night at Kingsfield Elementary School.

It was night of madness for students, family members and faculty. Students had a chance to wear their favorite costume while visiting different “spooky”scientific stations.  Students, of all ages, had the opportunity to conduct their own science experiments, create a few special items to take home with them and even see a few “tricks” along the way!

Bashore Completes First Solo Flight On His 16th Birthday

John Bashore took to the skies and completed his first solo flight on his 16th birthday earlier this month.

Bashore and his flight instructor Bill Weaver flew from the Brewton Airport to Atmore where Weaver exited the aircraft and Bashore completed two solo flights.

Bashore and Weaver met at a Byrneville church and formed an immediate bond. Both love aviation, and Bashore said he has been a blessing and a great mentor in his life.

Weaver trained as an Army pilot during the Vietnam War. He also operated a flight training school at the Milton Airport in the 1970s. Weaver is now retired with 35 years of service flying for oil companies in the Gulf of Mexico.

Bashore and Weaver have flown together since 2011.

Over the past year, they have worked hard training so Bashore could complete his solo on his 16th birthday. Over the next year he will continue the training need to complete 15 hours of solo flight and 10 hours of instructional flight and pass the FAA exam.

Bashore said he looking forward to obtaining his private pilot license on his 17th birthday. He hopes to one day attend the U. S. Air Force Academy and fly the F-22 fighter. He attends Northview High School where he is a member of the NJROTC.

Jim Allen Elementary Students Receive Free Dictionaries

Members of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in Cantonment recently presented new dictionaries to students at Jim Allen Elementary School. Each third grader received their a copy of “A Student’s Dictionary.” The goal of The Dictionary Project is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. Northview Grad North Completes Basic Military Training

U.S. Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Celeste B. North graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

North is the daughter of Catadro and Kimberly North of Atmore.

She is a 2018 graduate of Northview High School.

Tayler Mills Named Tate High Homecoming Queen; Alex Moorhead Named King

Tayler Mills was named the 2019 Tate High School homecoming queen Saturday night, and Alex Moorehead was named homecoming king.

First runner-up was Avery Young, and second runner-up was Baylor Phillips.

After the school district canceled all activities Friday due to Tropical Storm Nestor, the presentation of the homecoming court was rescheduled for Saturday night during the homecoming dance. School officials said they will recognize the homecoming court during next Friday night’s Senior Night so they will have the opportunity to walk the field with their parents.  Exact details were still being finalized Saturday night.
