Storybooks Come Alive At Bratt Elementary For Literacy Week

Schools across Escambia County participated in “Celebrate Literacy Week” during the past school week.
At Bratt Elementary School Friday, it was much like a library shelf come alive, as students, teachers and staff dressed as their favorite storybook characters. Characters like Curious George, Amelia Bedelia, Harry Potter, Fancy Nancy and Charlie Brown roamed the hallways. The school also held a parade of characters at the end of the day, with more reading favorites from The American Girl series, Magic Tree House, Junie B. Jones and The Cat in the Hat (along with, of course, Thing 1 and Thing 2).

The goals of “Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!” were to promote literacy throughout the state by raising awareness of the programs and projects offered by the Department of Education and its partner agencies and organizations, and most of all, to promote the enjoyment of reading for children and adults of all ages.
In addition to Storybook Character day, classes at Bratt Elementary participate in “Buddy Reading” as older students read aloud to younger students. Every morning on closed circuit television a “mystery reader” read a story and students had to make a guess to identify the reader. “Drop Everything and Read” occurred throughout the school each day, and on Tuesday the students joined others across Escambia County to contribute to the Million Minute Marathon by reporting to the state the total minutes they read on that day.
“The Reading Leadership Team at Bratt Elementary would like to thank all participants and parents for helping make reading fun,” said Lee Cassady, Bratt’s reading coach.

Today, it’s part four of our multi-part series “the road to the crown” as we follow 25 young ladies at Northview High School in their quest for the crown and the title of “Miss Northview High School” for 2011.
Today we introduce you to the third and final set of contestants. Their biographies, as submitted by the girls, are below along with their photos. You can click any photo below to enlarge.

Miss Allie Rebecca Bryan
Allie is the 17-year old daughter of Keith and Becky Bryan. She has been a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for four years and a member of the Student Government Association for four years. Allie has been a member of the Tribal Beat marching band for four years, where she has participated in both the color guard and the drum line. She has been a member of the chorus for three years, has played guitar for the Northview Performing Arts program for three years, and has been a part of the theatre program for three years. She has been a member of the Beta Club for three years and a member of the Spanish Club for two years. In her community, Allie is an active member of Pace Assembly of God, where she participates with the IGNITE youth ministries. She has spent time volunteering with missions work in Brazil and plans on returning there soon. Allie was also selected to represent Escambia County on the 2010 National Youth Leadership Tour in Washington, D.C.
Her hobbies include singing, photography, watching Alabama football, and spending time with family and friends.
Her future plans are to attend college and earn her degree in social work.
Miss Lauren Elizabeth Cloud
Lauren is the 17-year old daughter of Ronnie Cloud and Angela McMahan. As a freshman, she was on the junior varsity cheerleading team. She has been a varsity cheerleader for three years and currently holds the title of co-captain. Last year, she was a member of the NHS competition team that placed eighth in the nation. She has been a member of the Future Farmers of America for three years, a member of the Five Flags Dance Academy for two years, and has played softball for the Molino Community Team for three years. She has also been a member of DCT for one year. In her community, Lauren has volunteered her time to work the “Kicking Cancer Bike Run” and has worked Relay for Life events. She also participated in the 2009 “Trotting for a Cure” 20-mile triathlon. Lauren works as a waitress for the Alabama Wing House in Atmore.
Her hobbies include cheerleading, photography, riding horses, going to the beach, and spending time with loved ones.
Her future plans are to attend Troy University to obtain a degree in education. She wants to specialize in working with autistic children. While in attendance there, she hopes to become a Troy cheerleader.
Miss Ashley Nicole Mooney
Ashley is the 15-year old daughter of Scott and Sandy Mooney. As a freshman, she was on the junior varsity cheerleading team, the junior varsity softball team, and a member of the NHS cheerleading competition team that placed eighth in the nation. She was also voted freshman class treasurer. This year, Ashley is a member of the varsity cheerleading team and was selected to represent her class on the homecoming court. In her community, she is an active member of Healing Waters Church. She was also awarded the “Take Stock in Children” scholarship.
Her hobbies include riding horses, hunting, playing tennis, scrapbooking, photography, and spending time with family.
Her future plans are to attend the University of Florida and become a photographer or a crime scene investigator.
Miss Mariah Laine Albritton
Mariah is the 14-year old daughter of Randy and Lisa Albritton. As an eighth grader, she won third place in the Miss EWMS pageant. She was also a member of the EWMS competition cheerleading team that won third in the nation in their division. At Northview, she is a junior varsity cheerleader. In her community, Mariah is an active member at the Pace Assembly of God Church and participates in the youth group. She also volunteers her time at Bratt Elementary.
Her hobbies include cheering, shopping, taking pictures, listening to music, and spending time with loved ones.
Her future plans are to attend Auburn University to become an orthodontist.
Miss Rebekah Mary Sepulveda
Rebekah is the 14-year old daughter of Scott and Becky Sepulveda. As an eighth grader, she received an award for mathematics and the Presidential Physical Fitness Award. This year, Rebekah is a junior varsity cheerleader. In her community, she is an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and is involved with the S.M.Y.L.E. youth group. She also does volunteer work with her father at the Optimists Club, as well as volunteer work at Byrneville Elementary School.
Her hobbies include cheerleading, dancing, swimming, gymnastics, and spending time with loved ones.
Her future plans are to attend college and pursue a degree in dentistry.
Miss Abigail Christie-Anne Odom
Abby is the 16-year old daughter of Melissa Martin. She has been a member of the NHS Drama Department for one year and played “Susan” in their production of “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe”. She has been a member of the Art Club for two years and took first place at the Pensacola Art Show. This year, Abby is a junior varsity cheerleader and currently holds the title of captain. She was also selected to represent the junior class on the homecoming court. She has taken dance for 13 years at Studio 43 in Mobile and volunteers her time as an assistant coach of the Northwest Escambia Mites cheerleaders. In her community, Abby is an active member of Enon Baptist Church.
Her hobbies include listening to music, photography, reading, spending time with close friends, and dancing.
Her future plans are to attend Pensacola State College and become an ultrasound technician.
Miss Courtney Alexandra Weaver
Courtney is the 15-year old daughter of Mike and Deana Weaver. In eighth grade, she was a member of the Ernest Ward Middle School Honor Society where she held the office of historian. She was also part of the EWMS competition cheerleading team that placed third in the nation in their division. She has played softball for the Northwest Escambia league for seven years and has received the “Top Gun” award for the past three years. At Northview, Courtney is a member of the Interact Club. In her community, she is an active member of the First Assembly of God church and the “Powerhouse” youth program.
Her hobbies include going to the beach, reading books by Nicholas Sparks, cooking, watching Alabama football, and spending time with loved ones.
Her future plans are to attend college and pursue a degree to become a pharmacist.
Miss Morgan Nicole Digmon
Morgan is the 14-year old daughter of Mark and Tina Digmon. At Northview, she is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has taken dance at Heather Leondard’s Danceworks for five years and helps teach ballet. In her community, Morgan is an active member of Ray’s Chapel Baptist Church, where she takes part in the youth group program.
Her hobbies include dancing, playing softball, shopping, listening to music, and spending time with family and friends.
Her future plans are to attend college at Auburn University. She hopes to one day become a dance teacher and own a dance studio.
Miss Lauryn Elizabeth Walker
Lauryn is the 14-year old daughter of Ronnie and Joy Walker. This year, she is on the junior varsity cheerleading team. In her community, Lauryn is an active member of Parkview Baptist Church. She has done volunteer work with Byrneville’s Relay for Life team, as well as Campfire U.S.A. daycare and Byrneville Elementary School.
Her hobbies include swimming, reading, dancing, listening to music, and spending time with her family and friends.
Her future plans are to attend the University of South Alabama where she will study to become a nurse.

Miss Mallory Ann Bell
Mallory is the 18-year old daughter of Alan and Gail Bell. She has been a member of the Beta Club for three years, a member of the Interact Club for one year, and a member of the FCCLA for two years, where she has held the office of president. Mallory has been a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for four years, where she currently holds the title of vice-president. She has also been a member of Rho Kappa for three years and serves as the president. She has been a member of the softball team for one year, a member of the weightlifting team for one year, and a member of the cross country team for one year. Mallory has been an Atmore Rotary Club Academic All-Star for three years. In her community, she attends Bratt First Baptist Church and is an active member of the youth group and choir.
Her hobbies include playing the piano and guitar, singing, and running.
Her future plans are to attend the University of South Alabama.
Miss Sarah Malinda Killam
Sarah is the 17-year old daughter of Gary and Melanie Killam. She has been a member of the junior varsity volleyball team for one year and a member of the cross country team for three years. She has also been a member of the softball team for four years, a member of the weightlifting team for four years, and a varsity cheerleader for one year. Sarah has been a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for four years and currently serves as president. She has been elected by her peers as class president all four years. She was also selected by her peers to represent them on the homecoming court, both her freshman and sophomore years, and was chosen Freshman Class Maid. This year, Sarah was again selected to represent her class on the homecoming court and was awarded second runner up to the queen. Sarah has been an Atmore Rotary Club Academic All-star for three years and has taken ballet and piano for ten years. She has been a member of the Beta Club for two years, the Student Government Association for two years, where she has held the office of historian and secretary, and a member of Rho Kappa for two years, where she has served as secretary and treasurer. Sarah was voted into Northview’s “Hall of Fame”. She was also voted “Most Talented” by the senior class. In her community, Sarah is a member of Flomaton First Baptist Church and is active in both the youth group and the choir. She also helps teach ballet classes at Heather Leonard’s Danceworks.
Her hobbies include singing, playing the guitar and piano, leading worship on Wednesday night for her youth group, and spending time with family and friends.
Her future plans are to attend college and pursue a degree in physical therapy.
Miss Megan Juliette Ryan
Megan is the 17-year old daughter of Eddie and Kim Ryan. She has been a member of the basketball team for three years and a member of the varsity cheerleading team for three years, where as a junior she was co-captain and this year, she holds the title of captain. She was also a member of the NHS competition cheerleading team that placed eighth in the nation. She has been a member of the softball team for one year, a member of the cross country team for one year, and a member of the track team for one year. Megan has been a member of the Future Farmers of America for three years and a member of the Interact Club for one year. Megan is currently taking dual enrollment classes at Pensacola State College. In her community, she is a member of Century Church of Christ and does volunteer work with the Northwest Escambia softball program. Megan also has a job cleaning the Atmore Church of Christ.
Her hobbies include cheering, running, wake-boarding at the river, and spending time with loved ones.
Her future plans are to finish out her second year at Pensacola State College and then transfer to a University. She wants to obtain her bachelor’s in nursing and become an ER nurse at a major hospital.
Miss Brittany Danyel Thompson
Brittany is the 17-year old daughter of Anthony and Alicia Thompson. She has been a member of the Student Government Association for three years, a member of the Interact Club for three years, and a member of S.W.A.N.S. for two years. Brittany has been a member of the Future Farmers of America for three years and has held the office of photographer/historian. She was a member of the junior varsity cheerleading team her sophomore year and is currently on the varsity cheerleading team. She is currently in the Spanish Club and on the Prom Committee. She participated in the Chief Challenge 5K run and also volunteered her time building a house with the Habitat for Humanity in Atmore. Brittany has also volunteered her time working with children at Camp E.D.G.E. for Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Her hobbies include cheerleading, dancing, designing t-shirts, writing poetry, riding horses, and watching Auburn football.
Her future plans are to attend Florida Institute of Ultrasound for two years and then transfer to Auburn University. She also hopes to become a member of their dance team.
Miss Jessica Lea Warner
Jessica is the 16-year old daughter of Jesse and Lisa Warner. As a freshman, she was on the junior varsity cheerleading team. This year, Jessica is on the varsity cheerleading team and was the recipient of the 2010-2011 Most Improved Award. In her community, she has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Bratt and actively participates in the youth group.
Her hobbies include reading, spending time with friends, and playing games with her family.
Her future plans are to attend college to obtain a degree to become an anesthesiologist.
Miss Clarissa Paige Ross
Clarissa is the 16-year old daughter of Anthony Ross and Samantha Nowling. As a freshman, she was a member of the junior varsity cheerleading team. In her community, she volunteers her time as a coach for the Cantonment Cowboys cheerleading program. She also takes gymnastics with First City.
Her hobbies include going to the beach, shopping, cheerleading, running 5K’s with her brother, and spending time with family and friends.
Her future plans are to go to the University of Florida on a cheerleading scholarship and obtain a degree to become a pediatrician.
Miss Tiffany Diane Sutton
Tiffany is the 16-year old sister of Tracy Ann Adcock. She has been a member of the track team for one year, a member of S.W.A.N.S. for one year, and a member of the Interact Club for one year. Tiffany has also been a member of the Art Club for one year and participated in the 2009 Pensacola Interstate Fair student art competition, as well as, the 2010 Artel Gallery Student Mardi Gras Mask Contest. She received the highest academic average award for her visual arts class in 2009-2010. In her community, Tiffany is an active member of Walnut Hill Baptist church and the youth group.
Her hobbies include: swimming, softball, making jewelry, and spending time with family and friends.
Her future plans are to attend college and earn a cosmetology degree.
Miss Morgan Deann Smith
Morgan is the 15-year old daughter of Matthew and Tammy Smith. In her family, she enjoys spending time with her three siblings. Morgan also loves to observe nature at the river and being outdoors.
Her hobbies include reading, dancing, taking pictures, fishing, shopping, and playing volleyball.
Her future plans are to attend the University of South Alabama and pursue a degree in medicine. She hopes to either become a nurse or a pediatrician.

Miss Caitlyn Brianne Brown
Caitlyn is the 18-year old daughter of Ronnie and Angela Brown. As a freshman, she was a member of Angie Shelley’s Twirl Time. She has been a majorette for the Tribal Beat marching band for four years and currently holds the title of co-captain. She has been a member of the Tribal Spirit yearbook staff for three years and currently serves as the editor. She has also been a member of the Beta club for two years, a member of the Interact club for one year, and a member of Rho Kappa for two years, where she has served as vice president both years. Caitlyn was selected as the sophomore class parliamentarian and the junior class secretary. She was voted “Best Dressed” by the senior class and was also first runner up to Miss NHS 2010. Since her freshman year, Caitlyn has been a lifeguard for the Atmore City Pool and has also taught swimming lessons. During her years with the Tribal Beat band, she has attended numerous majorette camps and competitions.
Her hobbies include twirling, reading, cooking, spending time with her family and friends, and having “girl days” with her mom.
Her future plans are to attend the University of Alabama, where she hopes to obtain a degree in telecommunications and become a sportscaster. While she is in attendance there, Caitlyn plans on becoming a “Crimsonette.”
Miss Lauren Ashley McCall
Lauren is the 16-year old daughter of Joey and Robin McCall. As a freshman, she was on the junior varsity cheerleading team. She has been a varsity cheerleader for two years and was selected as a member of the NHS competition cheerleading team that placed eighth in the nation. She has been a member of the softball team for three years, the golf team for one year, the Future Farmers of America for one year, and a member of the Interact club for one year. She was voted sophomore class president and was chosen to represent her peers on the homecoming court her freshman and sophomore years. Lauren was selected by the Suburban West Rotary Club as the grand prize winner in the Rotary International Four-way test essay contest. Lauren received the “Miss Physical Fitness” award and was one of the top ten contestants in Miss NHS 2010. In her community Lauren is an active member of Bratt First Baptist church, where she participates in the youth group. She is also a member of Team David, which is a youth leadership group within her church. She volunteers her time with the Century Relay for Life team and also teaches cheerleading skills to young girls.
Her hobbies include dancing, playing flag football, taking pictures, watching sports, and spending time with her family and friends.
Her future plans are to attend a Florida Junior College with a Bright Futures Scholarship and then transfer to Auburn University. She hopes to pursue a degree in sports medicine.
Miss Charleigh Victoria McPherson
Charleigh is the 17-year old daughter of Larry and Mary McPherson. As a freshman, she was on the junior varsity cheerleading team and was the recipient of the 2008-2009 Spirit Award. She has been a member of the varsity cheerleading team for two years and currently holds the title of co-captain. Last year, Charleigh was a member of the NHS competition cheerleading team that placed eighth in the nation. She has been a member of the junior varsity softball team for one year, a member of the golf team for one year, a member of the Art club for one year, and a member of the Interact club for one year. As a sophomore, she was selected by her peers to represent them on the homecoming court. In the 2009 Miss NHS pageant, Charleigh was hand selected by the judges as the recipient of the Miss Hospitality award. She was also one of the top ten contestants in the 2010 Miss NHS pageant. In her community, Charleigh has played on the Northwest Escambia softball team for six years and has played on the Molino softball team for one year. She is an active member of St. Robert’s Catholic Church where she sings in the choir. This year, Charleigh was chosen to participate in the Youth Leadership Program in Atmore, Alabama.
Her hobbies include cheerleading, playing softball and golf, going to the beach, and spending time with loved ones.
Her future plans are to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham and pursue a degree in sports medicine.
Miss Hayley Renee Simpson
Hayley is the 18-year old daughter of Toney and Renee Simpson. She has been a majorette for the Tribal Beat marching band for four years and was selected as co-captain her junior year. This year, Hayley serves as captain. She has been a member of the weightlifting team for three years, a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for four years, a member of the Beta club for two years, a member of Rho Kappa for two years, where as a junior, she served as historian, and a member of the varsity softball team for four years. Hayley has been selected the past two years to represent her peers on the homecoming court. She was voted junior and senior class parliamentarian and is a member of First City gymnastics. Hayley is an active member of Ray’s Chapel Baptist church and participates in the youth group and choir. She has volunteered her time with Relay for Life for the past three years.
Her hobbies include reading, singing, cooking, listening to music, and twirling the baton.
Her future plans are to attend Auburn University. While pursuing her degree to become an anesthesiologist, she hopes to be a “Tigerette.”
Miss Dimond Brooke Tullis
Brooke is the 17-year old daughter of Bodie and Emily Tullis. As a freshman, Brooke was selected by her peers to represent them on the homecoming court and was on the junior varsity cheerleading team, where she served as co-captain of the squad. She has been a varsity cheerleader for three years and was the recipient of the 2009-2010 Best All Around Award. She was also a member of the NHS competition cheerleading team that placed eighth in the nation. Brooke has been the treasurer of her class for four years and has also been a member of the Tribal Spirit yearbook staff for four years. She was also a member of the Drug Awareness Team and held the office of secretary. This year, Brooke was selected by her classmates to represent them on the homecoming court and was crowned 2010 Homecoming Queen. She was also voted “Cutest” by the Senior Class. She is a member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and was 1st runner up in the 2008-2009 Poarch Creek Junior Princess contest. Brooke attends Bratt First Baptist Church and is an active member of the youth group. She works as a waitress at Wrangler’s Steak House.
Her hobbies include beading, gymnastics, swimming, cheering, babysitting, and spending time with friends and family.
Her future plans are to attend Faulkner State College for two years and then transfer to the University of Alabama.
Miss Ariel Kaye Holland
Ariel is the 16-year old daughter of Wayne and Amy Holland. As a freshman, she was a member of the junior varsity cheerleading team and was also a member of the NHS competition team that placed eighth in the nation. This year, she is a member of the varsity cheerleading team, the weightlifting team, and the golf team. Ariel has been a member of the track team for two years and a member of the softball team for two years. Last year, Ariel was selected by her peers to represent them on the homecoming court and was voted freshman class maid. In her community, she is an active member of the First Baptist Church of Bratt and participates in the Team David program. She also volunteers her time with the Northwest Escambia Cheerleaders.
Her hobbies include cheerleading, swimming, playing softball, shopping, and spending time with loved ones.
Her future plans are to attend Troy University where she hopes to cheer, while pursuing a degree to become a pediatric nurse.
Miss Tabitha Renea Steege
Tabitha is the 18-year old daughter of Gerald and Sudie Steege. She has been a member of the Tribal Beat marching band for four years, where she acts as section leader. She has been on the Northview Television production staff for one year, a member of the softball team for one year, the Interact club for one year, and a member of the Science club for one year. She has been a member of the Future Farmers of America for one year and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for one year. In her community, she is an active member of the First Baptist Church of Atmore, where she participates in the C.H.A.O.S. youth group choir, the drama team, and A.W.A.N.A. Tabitha has also volunteered her time with Bible School.
Her hobbies include playing the piano and spending time with family and friends.
Her future plans are to attend college and become a dental hygienist. She also hopes to one day start a family.
Miss Ashley Renea’ Cunningham
Ashley is the 15-year old daughter of Andy and Christina Cunningham. She has been a member of the Student Government Association for two years and currently serves as treasurer. She was also elected by her peers as vice-president of the freshman class. Ashley has been a junior varsity cheerleader for one year and was the recipient of the prestigious Spirit Award. She was also a member of the NHS competition cheerleading team that placed eighth in the nation. This year she is on the varsity cheerleading team and was selected by her peers to represent them on the homecoming court, where she was chosen sophomore class maid. She has been a member of the track team for one year, the Science club for one year, a member of the Future Farmers of America for one year, and a member of S.W.A.N.S for one year. In her community, she is a member of the Barrineau Park 4-H club.
Her hobbies include cheering, swimming, tennis, showing steers, and taking family vacations.
Her future plans are to attend a major university and obtain her degree to become a dentist.

Join NorthEscambia.com this week for our annual multi-part series “the road to the crown”.
We will follow 25 young ladies at Northview High School in their quest for the crown and the title of “Miss Northview High School” for 2011. We’ll introduce you to each girl and go behind the scenes with exclusive photos for a look at the annual Northview High School pageant.
A new installment of “the road to the crown” will be posted each morning this week. Then, on Sunday morning, we’ll introduce you to the new Miss Northview High School.
The annual Miss Northview High School Pageant will be held on Saturday, January 29 at 7:00 in the school auditorium. The pageant is sponsored by the Northview High Varsity Cheerleaders.
