Ascend Contributes $10,000 To ECSD Summer Reading Initiative

Ascend Performance Materials has made a $10,000 contribution to help support an Escambia County School District summer reading initiative.

The “Level Up with Summer Reading” program will run from May 25 to August 5. The district wide program will provide two to four summer reading books to each K-12 student, an additional two to four books for summer school students, and provide summer reading events hosted by various schools.

Barrineau Park Historical Society Awards Scholarships To Tate, Northview Seniors

The Barrineau Park Historical Society recently awarded two academic scholarships.

Northview High School senior Ethan Kilburn was awarded a $1,000 academic scholarship. He plans to attend the University of West Florida in the fall to pursue a degree in cybersecurity.

Tate High School senior Alyssa Daniels was awarded a $1,000 Stephen Jogan academic scholarship. She will attend the University of Florida in the fall and major in sports management.

Over 400 Escambia Students Take Part In ‘Battle Of The Books’ (With List Of Winners)

Over 400 students on 83 teams from 36 schools took part in a virtual Escambia County Battle of the Books competition recently.

Participating students read up to 15 titles from this competition year’s Sunshine State Young Readers book lists.  Teams met before, after, and during school with their coaches to discuss the books’ themes, characters, settings, and main events. The competition included four rounds of ten questions each, culminating with a final Lightning Round to break ties for first, second or third place.

Third Grade

  • 1st Place: Beulah Elementary, Team A. Coach: Dana Sharp. Students: London Farrior, Emma Nguyen, Olivia Nunn, Luke Wiggins, and Ally Wilson
  • 2nd Place: A. K. Suter Elementary. Coach: Paula Stillman. Students: Tenley Brannen, Chance Evans, Rowen Gosse, Emory Henry, and Ella Hill.

Byrneville Elementary Students Create Winning EREC Meeting Posters

Fifth graders at Byrneville Elementary School took part in a poster contest to promote Escambia River Electric Cooperative’s Annual Meeting.

The winning students received a cash award, and their posters were displayed at the meeting.

Sawmill Day Festival And Car Show Returns To Century

After a two year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Sawmill Day Festival and Car Show returned to Century Saturday.

The day included entertainment, free history museum tours, grilled hamburger meals, crafts, free exhibits, a car show and more.

Cantonment Rotary Awards $40,000 In Scholarships

The Cantonment Rotary Club Foundation annually awards scholarships to deserving students enrolled in various programs at Pensacola State College.

Recently, the club held a luncheon program during which it bestowed $40,000 in scholarships from various endowed funds in the Cantonment Rotary Club Foundation.

Cox Inspirational Student Heroes Recognized From Each Escambia County School

Cox Communications recently hosted the annual Cox Inspirational Student Hero Awards in Escambia County, recognizing 53 students who have overcome extreme hardships in their lives. T

“We’ve all been through some difficult times over these past couple of years, but these students have overcome so much more in their young lives,” said Cox Gulf Coast Market vice president David Deliman. “They’ve not only been through the pandemic, but other family tragedies or life challenges, and they’ve pulled through with a smile on their faces while bringing happiness to others. They deserve their time in the spotlight for being such an inspiration to us all.”

“The Escambia County School District is extremely thankful to Cox Communications. Their heart for students, coupled with celebrating student achievement and perseverance, is both commendable and inspiring,” said Escambia County School District Superintendent Dr. Tim Smith. “We speak of unity throughout Escambia County for the benefit of our district and students; our partnership with Cox exemplifies this unity, and we are so very grateful for that.”

The students were chosen by a committee of leaders at their school, due to their resilience in the face of adversity. Whether they have overcome a loss of a family member, medical issue, difficult family situation or other hardship, they did so with a positive attitude and continued to encourage and inspire others around them.

During the event, Cox presented the students with a personalized engraved medallion and certificates of honor. The students were also presented with certificates of achievement from Congressman Matt Gaetz, Florida Sen. Doug Broxson and Florida representatives Michelle Salzman and Alex Andrade.

Escambia County Commissioner Robert Bender was also on hand and presented a proclamation from the Board of County Commissioners, celebrating the students for their achievements overcoming obstacles.

The Cox Inspirational Student Hero Awards program began nearly 30 years ago in New Orleans, Louisiana. The program has spread to other Cox markets in the Southeast Region. To date, Cox has recognized nearly 4,500 students from Lafayette, Louisiana, to Gainesville, Florida.

The Heroes were recognized at a ceremony at the University of West Florida. This is the first Heroes event that was held in person at UWF since the beginning of the pandemic. In 2020 and 2021, the students were recognized virtually via a television show.

Ashley Slade Named Byrneville Elementary Teacher Of The Year

Ashley Slade has been named Byrneville Elementary School Teach of the Year.

Slade, described as a “rock star kindergarten teacher” with “one of the biggest hearts”, was surprised with the news on Friday.

Kimbro-Cothron Named Tate High’s Sunshine State Scholar Nominee

April 29, 2022

Raegan Kimbro-Cothron was selected as Tate’s Sunshine State Scholar Nominee based on her excellent PSAT scores, EOC scores, and her high GPA. Her participation in dual enrollment math classes and her community service hours helped push her to the top of Tate’s selection list, according to the school.
