Escambia County’s October Students Of The Month Named

Escambia County Students of the Month for October have been named by the Escambia Association for Administrators in Education. The awards are presented monthly to two or three students from participating schools.

The following students were named from participating North Escambia area schools:

Mark Your Calendars — Walnut Hill VFD Sets Annual Fish Fry

Mark your calendars — the Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department has scheduled their 42nd Annual Catfish Fry.

The event will be Saturday, November 5 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Walnut Hill Fire Station on Highway 97.

Plates will be $7 each with your choice of catfish fillets or grilled chicken, plus baked beans, cole slaw, hush puppies, homemade bread and cake. There will also be drawing for door prizes beginning at 1 p.m.

The Northwest Florida Blood Center Bloodmobile will also be on hand for a blood drive.

Dogwood Dulcimers Entertain Century Care Residents, Hold Jam Session

The Dogwood Dulcimer Association entertained the residents of Century Care Center late last week before holding a weekend jam session at Lake Stone.

The Dogwood Dulcimers invites anyone, including beginners, to play a dulcimer or traditional instrument with them for free. The group meets every Monday at 7 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 3400 Bayou Blvd., Pensacola and the third Thursday of each month, 7 p.m. at Cottage Hill United Methodist Church at 229 Williams Ditch Road in Cantonment.

Hundreds from across South Alabama and Northwest Florida enjoyed Williams Station Day Saturday in Atmore.

Williams Station Day takes its name from Atmore’s early history when in 1866 the community was a supply stop along the Mobile and Great Northern railroad.

Festival-goers were entertained by a wide variety of musical acts, and a wide variety of  arts and crafts were also available.

Northview Holds Senior Night

October 23, 2011

Northview High School honored their seniors during the annual Senior Night Friday before a football win over Freeport.

The school also honored Athletic Director Sammy Day who will retire at this end of this school year. Day has been a teacher and coach for 37 years (1975-2012) in the Escambia County School District and has served as athletic director and coach at Northview High School for 18 years (1995-2012).

Byrneville Students Collect Hats, Cash For Kids With Cancer

October 19, 2011

Byrneville Elementary School recently held a “Hats Off For Cancer” program, collecting money and  new hats to donate to children who lose their hair due to cancer treatments. The school collected 29 new hats and $310, according to Principal Dee Wolfe-Sullivan.

“We may be a small school, but our families have big hearts,” Wolfe-Sullivan said.

Since 1996, over one million brand new hats have been collected nationwide through the program for children with cancer.
