Milby, Erickson Win Free Wedding; Local Couple Falls Short

Evan Milby and Alanna Erickson have won this year’s Pensacola Block Party Wedding Contest — a free wedding held on the streets of Pensacola with everything donated by various vendors.
“We had a great experience and we wish them the best in life,” Jessy Killam, a top ten finalist in the contest, said Wednesday night. “The marriage truly begins after the wedding is over.”
Jessy and her fiance Jarrett Swearingen, were featured Monday in a NorthEscambia.com story due to their local ties.
Jessica grew up in Byrneville and graduated from Northview High School. Her fiance Jarrett grew up in Jay and graduated from Jay High School. He’s now an Escambia County Sheriff’s deputy.

Molino Class: Raising Urban And Backyard Poultry

The Escambia County Extension will host a class on raising poultry focused on both the urban and backyard farmer. Classes will be held on Monday, August 5, at the Molino Community Complex, 6450 Highway 95-A, and Wednesday, August 7, at the Downtown Library, 200 W. Gregory Street. Both programs begin at 6 p.m.
This class will provide information on breed selection, housing, nutrition and daily care for new and current poultry owners.
Contact Fran Lainhart, Escambia County Extension, (850) 475-5230 to reserve a seat. Space is limited to 40 participants.
Northview Schedules 9th Grade, New Student Orientation

Northview High School will host 9th grade and new student student orientation on Thursday, August 15, from 8-11 a.m..
Students will report directly to the theater. Signs and guides will be available to direct students to the correct area. Parents should arrange for transportation to pickup their child from the school promptly at 11:00.
Current 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students can pick up schedules, get their textbooks any time between 9 a.m. and noon on August 14. Upon arriving on campus, students should report directly to the attendance window to pick up schedules before proceeding to the media center for textbooks.
Parents can find bus transportation information on the school website.
Counselors will not be available for schedule changes at this time but students may pick up a change of schedule form. Offices will be closed from noon until 1 p.m.
Barrineau Park 4-H Members Donate To Children’s Hospital

Dillon Conti challenged his fellow Barrineau Park 4-H Club members to give something back to the community.
He presented them with the idea of collecting board games to donate to the Child Life Program at Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital in Pensacola.
Each member set aside a portion of the proceeds they received from the sale of their animal and showmanship winning from the GCA/NRA Spring Livestock Show last April at the Langley Bell 4-H Center. Each club member used the funds to purchase a board game of their choice.
The Barrineau Park 4-H Club members presented the board games Wednesday morning to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital. Club members plan to make another donation next year.

Iraqi Educator Learns About American Farming In Walnut Hill

A few farming tips from Walnut Hill may be put to use in Iraq soon.
Walnut Hill farmer Mike Koehn and UF/IFAS Extension Escambia County Extension Agent Libbie Johnson recently hosted Bashar Hwaidi from the Qadisiyah province of Iraq on a short farm tour. Bashar was in Escambia County with a larger delegation of teenage visitors from the Gulf Coast Diplomacy Council.
During his trip to Walnut Hill, Hwaidi wanted to learn more about American agriculture and take the knowledge back to Iraq where he serves as an educator at the Small Business Development Center in Diwanyah City.
Hwaidi learned about cotton and peanut production, GPS navigation, financing and marketing systems for row crop farmers.
Ben Koehn of Walnut Hill also demonstrated “hands off” tractor driving in which GPS navigation is used to steer a tractor over an exact path in a field.
Hwaidi explained that precision agriculture is not the norm in Iraq and that he was very interested to see how different production practices are between Walnut Hill and Iraq.

Camp Quarternote Presents ‘Sermon on the Mound’

Dozens of local kids spent the past week learning an entire play during Highland Baptist Church’s Camp Quarternote. They performed the “Sermon on the Mound” musical Sunday night at the church.

Northview NJROTC Members Take Part In Teen CERT Training

Eight members of the Northview High School NJROTC unit participated in Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training this week, sponsored by the federal Emergency Management Agency. Teen CERT is a national program of volunteers trained in disaster preparedness and emergency response. Teen CERT training teaches teens about the potential disasters that could affect their area and how to safely and responsibly respond to them.

Manna Cuts Ribbon On Renovated, Upgraded Food Pantry

Manna Food Pantries held a ribbon cutting and open house at their newly renovated warehouse facility on Gonzalez Street Tuesday. The Main Pantry renovations were made possible by a grant from the Impact 100 group.
Manna serves those in need in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties through six pantries located in Pensacola, Ensley, Gonzales, Cantonment, Milton and Jay.
