The show was held in honor of Branden Penegar. He was known as the “Gentle Giant” and was a 2011 graduate of Tate High School, an assistant coach for the freshman Tate Aggies’ football program and varsity tennis team, and a member of the Tate High School Student Hall of Fame. He passed away in March 2013 at the age of 20.
Penegar was an active member of the Gonzalez United Methodist Church and youth program. Proceeds from the car show benefit the youth programs at the church.

It’s Tree Planting Time

Planting a tree in your yard can be beneficial for years to come. Some of the benefits include reducing utility costs, landscape eautification, habitat for songbirds and other wildlife. If you are planting a tree, here are some tips to remember.
First, put the right tree in the right place. Consider the size the tree will become both above ground and below. Look up for potential interference with overhead wires and look down for driveways, sidewalks, and pipes that may interfere with root growth. Consider species suitable to the soil and planting zone where you live. Native species tend to be hardier and are easier to take care of.
Plant the tree at the proper depth. Do not make the hole deeper than the root ball of the tree. Look for where the roots spread from the base of the tree (trunk flare). Place the tree in the hole so that the trunk flare is slightly above the original ground level. This will allow for some settling.
Keep it simple. Soil amendments and fertilizers should not be added at the time of planting. Native trees are especially suited to their environment. Also, staking small trees is not usually necessary. If you have a large tree, simply staking the root ball in place will likely be more effective than tying the trunk off and will not require removal later.
Properly mulch. Put a couple of inches of mulch over the planting area. Do not let it touch the base of the tree and especially do not pile it deep on the trunk (volcano mulching), because moist bark can lead to wood decay. Good choices include pine straw, leaf litter and bark chips.
Finally, water the new tree weekly until it is established. Remember, springtime in Florida is the driest time of the year, and young trees often die from lack of water. The rule of thumb is 3 gallons per inch of tree diameter applied slowly at the root ball.

Oh My! It Was Pi Day With Pie In The Face For Kingsfield Elementary Teachers

Thursday was Pi Day, held to honor 3.14, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. And Kingsfield Elementary School celebrated with pie.
Teachers volunteered to get pied in the face as part of a Relay for Life fundraiser.

Northview, Jay, Central Students Picked For Washington Youth Tour

Keaton Brown of Northview High School, Hannah Morris of Jay High School and Kylie Schwarz of Central High School have been name winners of the Escambia River Electric Cooperative 2019 Youth Tour to Washington contest.
Judges from PowerSouth Energy Cooperative in Andalusia, AL, and Southern Pine Electric Cooperative in Brewton, AL, scored contestants in their interviews based on their knowledge of Escambia River Electric Cooperative and the history of rural electrification. Personal attributes of each candidate such as character, academic ability, personality and leadership skills were also considered.
Brown, Morris and Schwarz will represent EREC on the Washington Youth Tour in June. They will also have the chance to see the sites, learn about the nation’s capital, rural electrification and more.
Annual Branden Penegar Car Show Set For Saturday In Gonzalez

The sixth annual Brandon Penegar Memorial Car Show will held this Saturday at the Gonzalez United Methodist Church on Pauline Street.
Any make, model or year car is welcomed for the show. Car registration will be from 8:00-11:00 a.m. on March 16. The fee is $15 to only display a car, $25 to enter the car in the show. Spectator admission is free. Click here for a printable flyer (pdf) with more information.

Tate High Graduate Martin Completes Basic Training

U.S. Air Force Airman Joshua L. Marlin graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Marlin is the son of Kenneth Marlin of Pensacola.
He is a 2013 graduate of Tate High School.
Cops And Kids Have Fun At Spring Picnic

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office will hosted their Cops & Kids Spring Festival Saturday at Ashton Brosnaham Park.
There were games and prizes, an obstacle course and free food, along with a chance to meet K-9, SWAT, Mounted Posse and their horses, Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS, ESAR and more.
The ECSO DUI Unit had a course for adults and teens to learn the effects of driving while impaired by wearing impaired goggles while driving a pedal cart.

Students Learn About Ag During ‘Fresh From Florida’ Event (With Gallery)

Hundreds of elementary school students learned about agriculture first hand Friday morning during the Northview High School FFA “Fresh From Florida” program in Bratt.
The program gave students a chance to make and enjoy eating their own fresh butter, get up close to farm animals and farm equipment and learn more about how food gets from the farm to their table.

The Northview Fresh From Florida program has been named the best in the state multiple times by the Florida FFA, and the chapter has been recognized nationally for their efforts.’
As the even started, Northview dedicated the Glenn Key Livestock Handling Facility. Key, who passed away in 2013, taught agriculture at Ernest Ward High School for 27 years. He established numerous scholarships and education funds for agriculture students. Friday’s program was dedicated in his honor.
