May 27, 2008

offenderlarge.jpg

There are 40 registered sex offenders living in North Escambia, one of them within a few hundred feet of one school’s property line.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, there are 16 registered sex offenders in the 32535 Century area zip code, eight in the McDavid/Walnut Hill 32568 zip code and 16 in the 32577 Molino zip code.

One, Stanley E. Haynie, 48, lives in the 3000 block of York Road. York Road runs off Pine Barren Road next to Northview High School and very near the driveway to the student parking lot. Haynie was convicted of “Lewd or lascivious exhibition victim under 16 years old offender 18 or older” in 2001 and “Lewd or lascivious conduct victim under 16 years old offender under 18 years” in 2003. His address was last confirmed the FDLE system in February by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Of the offenders in North Escambia, FDLE classifies two as “predators”, one in the Molino area and one in the McDavid area. Danny Meeks, 55, of the 1900 block of Chance Road in Molino was convicted of sexual battery with a weapon or force in 1996. Loyd J. Berthiaume, 56, of the 500 block of Cox Road in McDavid was convicted of lewd lascivious acts on or in the presence of a child under 16 in 1996.

To search the FDLE sexual offender database, go to www.flsexoffender.net. The FDLE web site also includes safety tips for children and parents.

A new email alert system has been announced by FDLE that will alert you if a sex offender moves into your neighborhood. Click here for that story.

Carver/Century Students Celebrate FCAT With Lots of Smiles

May 24, 2008

carver3rdreading.jpg

Denise Chapman, Escambia County Reading Department Middle School Teacher on Special Assignment, visited Carver/Century K-8 Friday to congratulate the third grade students on their FCAT scores.

She brought “smiley face” balloons for each of the three teachers and students.

Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Taylor, and Mrs. Fountain were also awarded certificates of achievement from Ms. Chapman recognizing their success.

The most excitement came when she took a basket of candy around the room for each student to choose two pieces of their favorite sweets. Students were also encouraged to read this summer and to visit the library.

They were encouraged to continue their efforts for the FCAT as fourth graders next year. Throughout the school year, Ms. Chapman and other School District reading specialists visited classrooms to lend advice, strategies and support to the teachers.

Ms. Chapman stated, “By having a vision and then putting forth hard work to accomplish their reading goals, students of Carver/Century K-8 School are now on the path of becoming successful independent strategic readers.”

3rd Grade FCAT Scores Are Good News For North Escambia Schools

May 22, 2008

fcatscreen.jpgThe third grade reading and math FCAT scores were released yesterday by the state, and they are good news for North Escambia schools, including Carver/Century K-8.

All four of the elementary schools in North Escambia posted gains in the percent of third grade students scoring a 3 or more on the math FCAT. A score of 3 is considered to be grade level. Carver/Century over doubled their percentage score over last year, while Bratt, Byrneville and Molino Park posted moderate percentage gains. Carver/Century’s percentage gain on the math FCAT was the second highest in the county.

On the third grade reading FCAT, Carver/Century’s percentage with a passing score soared, over doubling last year’s percentage. Their gains were percentage wise the highest in the county. Bratt and Byrneville experienced slight declines in their scores, while Molino Park held steady on the percent of students scoring a three or more.

On the math FCAT, 93 percent of Byrneville third grade students scored a three or higher. At Bratt, 86 percent scored a three plus. At Molino Park, that number was 84 percent, and at Carver/Century was 58 percent. That 58 percent at Carver/Century represents a huge increase over their 24 percent score last year, and it was the highest percentage increase in Escambia County. The state average was 76 percent.

On the third grade reading FCAT, both Bratt and Bryneville elementary schools had a slight decrease in their percentage passing to 83 percent. At Molino Park, 76 percent of third graders scored a 3 or higher, and at Carver/Century, that number was 63 percent. In Escambia County, five elementary schools scored better, by just a few percentage points, than Bratt and Bryneville. The state average was 72 percent.

Ernest Ward FFA Students Attend Auburn “BEEF U” Program

May 21, 2008

beefu.jpg

Three FFA members from Ernest Ward Middle School joined about 140 other youth from Alabama and Florida at first Beef Excellence Education for You (B.E.E.F. U) program recently.

EWMS students Seth Picheo, Devin Bell, Justin Hall participated in the program that taught kids ages eight to 18 lessons on beef cattle. Auburn University’s Animal Sciences department hosted B.E.E.F. U on campus.

At the Stanley Wilson Beef Teaching Unit and Auburn Bull Test Station, participants rotated through multiple sessions regarding live animals and carcasses. Live cattle terminology was covered as a briefing tool before partipants evaluated live cattle. The cattle were used to demonstrate beef conformation, feeder calf basics, and fed cattle evaluation.

In the Lambert-Powell Meats Laboratory, participants evaluated beef carcasses. The carcasses helped participants learn about and practice determining USDA yield grades and quality grades. A unique workshop taught participants how to make kielbasa, a beef and pork sausage. Participants learned which ingredients to use when making the sausage, how to prepare the meat and ingredients, and then had the opportunity to put the sausage meat into a casing.

Dr. Wayne Greene, Auburn Animal Sciences department head, said, “The B.E.E.F. U program was a success. These students had a preview of things they will learn if they become students in the Department of Animal Sciences at Auburn University.” He said B.E.E.F. U was a great training program for those that will become the leaders in the beef cattle industry.

The program was sponsored by the Alabama Cattleman’s Association 50 cent State Beef Check-Off program, Extension, and the Auburn College of Agriculture Animal Sciences department.

Where Do Century Kids Really Go To School? Most Don’t Attend Carver/Century

May 19, 2008

carvercenturymissingkids.jpg

As the Escambia County School Board considers Superintendent Jim Paul’s proposal to close Carver/Century K-8 school, a recurring question is where are the children?

Most are not at Carver/Century. Over half the elementary age and middle school age children that live in Carver/Century’s district do not attend the school.

Because Carver/Century is rated as an “F” school that does not make “AYP” — Adequate Yearly Progress — students in the Carver/Century school attendance zone are eligible to transfer to other schools, often with transportation at the district’s expense.

Numbers NorthEscambia.com obtained late last week from the Escambia County School District indicate that of the 314 elementary age children in the Carver/Century attendance zone, only 126 actually attend the school. Almost 40 percent of them, 121 in all, attend Byrneville Elementary School, a public charter school.

Another 48 attend Bratt Elementary School, and 11 attend Molino Park. There are three at Jim Allen Elementary School, three at Ensley Elementary School, one at N.B. Cook Elementary and one at Warrington Elementary School.

For elementary age children in the Carver/Century zone, the school district provides transporation to Bratt Elementary or Molino Park Elementary.

On the middle school side of Carver/Century, about 56 percent of the students that live in the Carver/Century district do attend the school. The school district reports that of the 159 middle school students in the zone, 89 do attend Carver/Century. Another 68 go to Ernest Ward Middle School and two attend Ransom Middle School.

These numbers do not account for students that may live in the Carver/Century school zone that are home schooled, attend a private or church school, may attend school across the state line in Alabama, or that may attend school in Santa Rosa County.

Northview Class of 2008 Holds Sunday Baccalaureate Service

May 18, 2008

bac17.jpg The end is near for the Class of 2008 at Northview High School, with Baccalaureate Services today and graduation just a week away.

Baccalaureate Services for Northview High School were held Sunday morning at the school.

The seniors will have final exams this week, but those are not the major tests in life that they will face, Pastor Gary Wieborg from the First Baptist Church of Bratt told the class.

bac60.jpg“Before them lies another test, the test of life, and what it means to have success” Wieborg (pictured left) said. “I don’t know of anything greater to achieve than eternal life.”

“High school is not greatest years of your life,” he said. “The best is yet to come.”

Wieborg told the soon to be graduates that their plans for life for insignificant compared to the plans God has for their lives.

“God’s plans for us are much bigger than your plans for yourself,” the pastor said. “The Lord has big things planned for you.”

Northview High School’s Class of 2008 will graduate at 4:00 p.m. next Saturday, May 24.
