Atmore Man Charged In Century Shotgun Shooting Road Rage Incident

An Atmore man has been charged with shooting a man in Century Tuesday and firing a shotgun across busy Highway 29 in a road rage incident.

Deririck Medlock Hoover, Ala., told deputies he was traveling north on North Century Boulevard (Hwy. 29) about 3:50 p.m. when a white four-door vehicle swerved in front of him, cutting him off. Medlock said he pulled into the Century Quick Stop at 8130 North Century Boulevard to calm down after the near-accident.

The driver of that vehicle, 55-year old Willie Floyd, was charged with aggravated battery, discharging a firearm in a public place and criminal mischief.

Medlock said he was outside his  vehicle talking on his cellphone when Floyd then pulled into the parking lot and confronted the him, according to an arrest report. Floyd then retrieved a shotgun from his car and fired into the Medlock’s car, striking it with birdshot at the roof line above the rear passenger door (pictured below left).

Medlock then ran across North Century Boulevard when Floyd fired again, striking the victim in the leg with birdshot. Birdshot was also lodged in his wallet in his back pants pocket. Medlock hid behind a tree across North Century Boulevard from the store, where he watched Floyd drive away. Medlock then drove to the Southern Panhandle Restaurant just north of the store and called 911. He was evaluated there by Escambia County EMS, and he refused transport to the hospital.

A witness inside the store at the time of the shooting gave chase, following Floyd’s vehicle to Williams Street, just off West Highway 4 in Century. Deputies were not able to locate the  vehicle on Williams Street once they arrived. Other witnesses confirmed the details given by the victim, and at the shooting was captured on the store’s surveillance video.

A 19-year old passenger in Floyd’s vehicle ran inside the convenience store during the incident. He was identified on the store’s surveillance video and questioned by deputies. He was not charged.

When deputies questioned Floyd, he refused to give them any statement and contacted his attorney. Floyd was positively identified as the shooter by the victim, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

    How is it tattle telling, when u could save someones life innocent or not… thats not tattle telling, thats what u do when you are 4, telling the police of a crime commited would be doing the right thing…

    That type of mentality is the reason why crime runs rampant and its ignorant people like you that enable the criminals to prey on others. Not reporting makes you as guilty as the offender. If that was someone I loved and they’d were put in harms way I’d pray for that one phone call. Remember your “no snitches” mentality when its you or yours

    @dola…people with that mentality is the reason some people shouldn’t carry guns. BTW I am a strong advocate for the 2nd amendment and never leave home without my 229.

    Actually, no, everyone should not carry a gun:
    Convicted felons should not carry guns,
    crazy people should not carry a gun (even if they’re kin),
    criminals should not carry a gun (especially if they’re kin),
    people prone to fits of anger should not carry a gun,
    jealous people should not carry a gun,
    bad shots should not carry a gun (lest they hit the innocent and/or me).

    Of course, the problem is that criminals don’t obey the law so they will carry guns no matter what you do, the crazy people and the others just might be armed, so other people — if they are good shots — might do well to consider being armed.

    Road rage? Maybe they should have just moved over or let the man go.Maybe this wouldn’t have happened.This is probably what happened.So all you people that think it’s your right to block traffic,you could be next.@ char,we don’t need a tattle tail calling the sherriff everyday,better of minding your own buisiness.Unless its some violent crime you witness.

    Road rage? Look in your mirror.If they want to get by ,move and let them.If you thnk they want to follow you,at your “legal speed” your wrong.Just move or they might follow you to a parking lot and shoot a shotgun at you.Just a thought.

    This man is dangerous! The Hand of God was over this situation; multiple people could have been injured or killed as a result of this. It’s bad enough to shoot a gun in a highly populated area (for N. Escambia, this is a highly populated area) but using a shotgun that spreads is even worse! Lock this guy up!

    @billybob – why condone the violence? If Mr. Floyd pulled into the parking lot to do the shooting, he needs to be put under the jail.

    However, my gut feeling is that there may be more to the story.

    This is why you call in every thing you see. If you see someone doing
    something wrong then it’s not all they do when it is worth calling the SHERIFF’S
    OFFICE.

    Call people in and get the bad one’s off the street.

    I don’t know what this world is coming to, but it seems to get worse every day…
    Alot of innocent people could have gotten shot/killed over such stupidity as this!
    I do hope that the victom is ok, and I hope that the suspect is caught sooner than later; and put away!!!
    There is no sense in this kind of behavior!!!
