Northview Falls To Gulf Breeze

The first home game of the season was a tough one for the Northview Chiefs Friday night in Brat as tje 1A Chiefs lost to the 5A Gulf Breeze Dolphins 49-14.
“Obviously we didn’t get it done in most areas tonight,” Northview head coach Sid Wheatley said after the loss to the Dolphins. “We didn’t have an answer for their offense — really they just hit us with big plays.”

Gulf Breeze took an early 7-0 lead with a 12-yard pass with 8:39 on the clock in the first quarter. With 2:55 in the first, Montaio Mitchell scored on a 2-yard run for the Chiefs, and Kevin Vaughan sailed the pigskin through the uprights to tie it up at 7-7.
Early in the second, quarterback Brandon Sheets was into the end zone from 40 yards out for the Chiefs. But the officials ruled he fumbled the ball to the Dolphins as he went down (pictured bottom of page). To add insult to injury, the Dolphin’s next drive ended with another score and a 14-7 Gulf Breeze lead.
Gulf Breeze scored again in the second quarter a couple of plays after a Northview fumble on second and goal at the 2-yard line. Northview answered in the third with a 5-yard run from Mitchell and another good kick from Vaughan. Gulf Breeze scored again twice in the fourth quarter.
“Offensively early in the game I thought we did some really good things,” Wheatley said. “If we had gotten the ball down in here deep early, it may have changed the whole complexion of the game and kept us right in it.”
Northview’s hopes for another trip to the state playoffs are still alive. The Chiefs (2-2) will be on the road down Highway 4 to play Jay (2-3) next Friday night in the first district contest of the year for either team.
“We will just have to bounce back,” Wheatley said the District 1-1A game. “If we want to get where we want to go, we’ve got to start with this district game. We’ve got to have a win: we’ve got to get better, a lot better next week.”

If not every player is meant to play then why have them practice or even why have a team of 40 plus players…lets just have a team of fifteen…or wait Northview already has that covered. No one here is coaching from the stands. Ive coached ball and never had any coplaints of kids not playing enough…so if i can do it so can they. If your starters are missing tackles and blocks left and right let their replacements do the same theres no difference in it. Haha yeah the best will play…well thats true when the second string knows how to run the scout team offensive plays better than the true playbook. Yall just dont have any clue…Maybe the second and third string should just stop doing summer workouts and attending all the practices…thats what A COUPLE of the starters do. And to WOW fatique is when players get hurt im just throwing that out there.

All think our kids are good enough to step out on the field. Truth is they did in daddy ball those days are gone. The best of the best will play the others will support them and be part of a team. Not every player is meant to play for there safety and for. The sake. Of the game they watch. So don’t be coaching from the seat.
My son does work out hard. My son does go to every practice. So do some other boys I know. They give it all they have. They seldom play.
If they are 2nd or 3rd string – that is expected. What should not happen but does happen, is the 1st string making mistakes over and over again, even after half time and yet they continue to play. By then, not only are their bodies tired and needing a break but in their minds they are beating themselves up for the errors. They need to be pulled, given a rest and a talk to let them focus again and get back in the game with power. That is why you have 2nd and 3rd string. To not use them is a waste of talent and ability for the WHOLE TEAM. It becomes a “starter game” and not a NHS game. You don’t just wait for an injury to put in your 2nd or 3rd line.
I’m tired of hearing everybody whining about kids not playing nd not dressing out. The Coach puts the best players on the field. If its your son that isn’t playing well then tell them to work hard in the weight room nd on their game nd eventually they will see the field.
These players performed good last night, and though there were some mistakes, we must learn from them. Yes, we are a 1A school, and yes, we played a 5A school; that is always going to be a problem. 5A schools have a wider range of people to pick from for their teams, where Northview takes what we have, and molds those players into the best they can be. There is always room for improvement, however.
As for the cheerleaders, you all did good, as always. To the dancers, you all performed wonderful. However, I am a fan of the band, and I really wanted to see them last night, during halftime (where they are supposed to perform). A minute and a half is not enough time for them to properly perform. That should have been taken into consideration when you all started to go out with 5 minutes left on the clock. Try for a pre-game show, for people who are waiting for the game to start.
And to the bands, both Northview’s and Gulf Breezes, thank you. I believe that the Soundwave band showed great class last night, staying to watch the Tribal Beat perform. Thank you.
Wow, the headlines read Gulfbreeze stomps Northview, lol, should have read Giants stomp younger group of Northview ! I say get the boys about the same size and then lets see ! Everyone could see how much bigger those Gulfbreeze players were, come on, really !
Great job on the website William!! I live in Gulf Breeze and as far as us having the biggest and the best,, our running back is 5′6″ 137 pounds. That ain’t big people. Gulf Breeze has never been known as a football school and has had to bust their butts to get where they are now. I think they won 3 games in the past 2 seasons. So maybe congratulations is in order instead of excuses. We all have to play schools that are larger than our own, thats just the way it is, it doesn’t count again your conference win/loss totals and can only make you better. Suck it up and play the game.

Well put…glad im not the only one seeing four to five players coming off the field when the ball changes sides…Come on from when I last counted there was 44 plus players dressed out and you sit there and watch the quaterback playing saftey the fullback playing nose and others going both ways while the other boys dont even need their game jerseys or pants washed due to no playing time.

Clearly you didnt see Northviews lack of class agaist South Walton, who is so far winless this season, as we continued pounding them with our first string boys even though the score was 40+ to 0 before halftime…AND STILL the other boys didnt go in until 5 min left in the game and they played one offensive series.

There’s only 22 players on the field at any given time, play hard nosed football and stop worring if they are a 5-A or if we are ranked # 1, 2 ,3 or 4 in the state. All the rankings do is put a target on your back for some underdog team to stomp a mudhole in ya like what Jay is gonna try and do next week.
a 5A school vs. a 1A school is not really a fair match up but its not impossible for Northview to have one, but it was a shame that the Gulf Breeze band had to ask Northview’s band why they didnt play in the half time show…Hope next home game to see the band on the field during the correct time.
all the kids did their best last night. nothing being perfect, but that is life. as long as these kids keep trying, they’ve got the idea. 5a vs 1a is not really a fair match, but a good experience. like that the cheerleaders continued to use different ways to get the crowd stirred up. rotc again did a nice job with presentation of colors. the band did great. It was nice of the Gulf Breeze band to stay & watch the performance after the game since their over use of time caused our band not to be able to do their half time show. I wouldn’t call it classy to use 2/3 of the available show time when one is the visiting team.
Thank you William for writing that we, a 1A school, were playing a 5A school. Our football players did well against ‘the giant.’ Obviously, the PNJ did not print the difference. Their headline read “Gulf Breeze stomps Northview, 49-14″ with no mention of the difference in class. Thank you for the band pictures, cheerleaders, and dance team. Keep up the good work. I too, wish the coaches would let other players in the game. We go to see our grandson. It would be nice if he had a chance to play.

Thank you for seeing what obviously the coaches don’t. The coaches are so quick to criticize the defense. Look at this week’s comments and week’s past comments. It’s always the defense’s fault. You are right. There were four or five fumbles, several of which led to touchdowns. That actually means, the offense gave up the ball. Maybe we shouldn’t be so quick on judging the players for mistakes, however, when there are NHS coaches who are supposed to help the kids learn from their mistakes and develop skills. How can the players do that when so much talent simply remains on the sideline. The coaches feel the need to play most of the same players for both offense and defense. How much sense does that make? This is why everyone, including the college scout who was sitting next to me in the stands, keeps saying that Northview has so much talent but no depth. Go Figure . . . .

To observer – you might be right, sometimes it is good to think “outside the box” and let players play in the positions they are good at and let someone else fill another position
Don’t be a hater don’t you think if coach thought there was a better person for QB it would have done happen. # 8 seems to play well both sides of the ball.
Those of you that left early missed an awesome performance by the Tribal Beat Band! The sax solo was amazing! Gulf Breeze band showed a lot of class.
This was a great game to learn from. Apply the lessons boys and keep your heads up.
No doubt the Chiefs made a lot of mistakes last night, but really a 5a school verses a 1a school. I do not think Gulf Breeze coaches showed any class by still throwing the ball with the big lead they had. The Gulf Breeze Band on the other hand showed a lot of class by staying and watching the Northview Band. No doubt the N.H.S. band was shortchanged for not being allowed to perform at halftime. I thought the band, cheerleaders, dance team and R.O.T.C. all did a great job!
I like how when the school loses people post how it was every things fault but the poor playing of NV. Suck it up NV, train harder next week, and learn some D, and how to run the ball, and you might win more often.
Like the Chipley game, turnovers plagued the Chiefs. I counted four fumbles, three of which lead to three Gulf Breeze touchdowns. 21 points the other way could have made this game more of a contest. Learn from the miscues and bone up for next week because Jay won’t hold Northview to 14 points!

William, thank you for taking photos of what the crowd did not see last night, the Tribal Beat Band’s performance of their half time show. These kids showed grit last night, and a spirit of not giving up. They were there without the presence of a band director in the face of a staff change. One minute and thirty seconds to two minutes is not enough time for a halftime performance done right. They graciously allowed the game to go on, on time. Kudos to these kids for their preparation, and going on with the show anyway, despite being relegated to a post game performance.

Number 8 seemed to really enjoy defense and made some great tackles. Maybe he should focus on that and let someone else be throwing the ball.
