One Injured After Slamming Into Parked School Bus

September 9, 2011

One person was injured after running off the roadway and hitting a parked school bus Thursday night in Bratt.

A 51-year female was transported to an area hospital by ambulance following the crash; her condition was not immediately available.

The accident happened about 8 p.m. on West Highway 4 near C.W. Caraway Road. The woman, who officials said might have been experiencing a medical problem, ran off the road, into a yard and struck an Escambia County School bus parked in the private driveway at the home of a bus driver. There was no one on the bus at the time of the crash.

The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol; further details have not yet been released.

The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Atmore Ambulance also responded to the call.

Some who have posted here have incorrectly aserted that I lay fault on the bus for causing this crash. Re-read my comments and you’ll find that this is not the case. My comments have been about my observation of the way that the bus was parked. If the bus had been parked some where else and completely out of the right of way, it would not have been involved in this collision and damaged. On the other hand, the driver of the car could have driven further down the road and crashed into somethine else like one of the twin bridges. Then I’d probably have something to say about that like both of the bridges are way too narrow and to meet current highway safety standards they should be replaced ASAP.

I hope the lady will be ok. Concerning the color of the bus, it woud not matter what color we are, I have been driving for 24 years and have seen a lot. I have had people not wanting to stop behind a bus to let students of and go around me

OBVIOUSLY IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THE BUS PARKED IN PERSON AND ARE ONLY GOING BY THIS PHOTO THEN YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED TO REALIZE THAT THE WAY THE LAND IS THIS BUS DRIVERS LAND GOES UPHILL AND HER PROPERTY IS PAST THIS BUS ! THIS BUS WAS IN A PRIVATE DRIVEWAY AND NOT PARKED WRONG OR ILLEGAL, UNTIL YOU KNOW THE FACTS YOU SHOULD NOT COMMENT ! HER DRIVEWAY GOES WAY PAST THE BUS ! SOME PEOPLE NEVER CEASE TO AMAZE ME ! MY GRACIOUS WHETHER THE LADY WAS HAVING A MEDICAL EMERGENCY OR DRUNK OR INNOCENT OR WHATEVER WE SHOULD BE PRAYING SHE IS OK AND NOT WORRYING ABOUT BLAMING AN INNOCENT BUS DRIVER FOR AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE I CAN ASSURE YOU THIS BUS IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN PARKED LEGAL AND ON HER PROPERTY !

Seems like a few are trying to blame this accident on where a bus was parked instead of the woman who was driving the car. It’s unfortunate the cars driver may have had a medical issue that caused her to allegedly pass out and run off the road and hit this bus….I’m hoping this woman is ok. It could have been worse, she could of stayed on the road and hit an oncoming car head on.
The experts here to decide if the bus was or wasn’t parked properly are FHP or the sheriffs department. From my understanding, in the 12 or so years that the bus driver parked her bus in her driveway, not one time ever had FHP, FDOT, or the ECSD ever knocked on her door to say her bus was parked illegally or that she was too far out in the right of way. From the many times I’ve seen this bus parked in that driveway, there has always been adequate space between the back of the bus and the roadway. And I’m pretty sure FHP or ECSD would have ticketed the bus driver the night of this accident had she blocked the right of way.

“bratt”… Come on, even from the picture one can see that the rear half of the bus is beyond the owner’s property line with the rear wheels of the bus on top of the culvert which is within the right of way.

as for “me”… I don’t know why I should respond, but trees are not placed by a driver and power poles are a necessity risk of modern living, so removing them would be impractical; on the other hand, finding a better parking spot for a bus is another story.

I have been a bus driver for 12 years and has never had a accident before i drive precious cargo every day to and from school. i have never put my children lives in danger. i love doing what i do. when there is a bus accident the first people want to blame is the bus drivers but most accidents are from the other person not paying attention so the first thing is let blame the bus driver. if it was not for buses how would your children get to school every day. we take our jobs serious, we don,t play around some make it out like were pick’n our nose or on cellphones but were not. we have camera all over our buses, and GPS that tells if were speeding. this lady that was in the accident is a very nice lady don’t no what happen but accidents happen. i took her children to church when they were small an i pray she is okay, will keep her an her family in our prayers. my bus was as far up my hill as i could get it , thank god i did our she could have went thru my camper or my house. come on people give us bus drivers a brake if you can do better there hiring ,every day the have signs up bus drivers needed. put your money were your mouth is.i’m a good christian lady and i get angry when people have nothing good to say about people only negitive things to say. on my bus i tell my children if you can’t say something nice then don’t say anything at all.maybe some adults should take that advise.

Oversight: if that’s the case we should cut all trees down and no more power poles either by the road. Her bus is always off the road.

Daughter: I hope your mon has a fast recovery!

I’ve seen this bus when it is parked and it is not always completely on private property and it partially hangs out on the road’s right of way (ditch). Maybe buses like this one that can’t be “out of the right of way” should be parked at a school when they are not in use. At least this way they wouldn’t in a potential danger zone so close to the roadway. This will be a risk management question that the school district will have to answer in what it is willing to consider an acceptable loss especially when a bus is parked in, on, or near a road and its right of way.

This is my mom. Denise Johnson. She is healing, but has a bad back injury. She passed out while driving, they are not sure why as of now. Please Pray for her as she has seen her share of hard times. She is dearly loved.

I hope she’s okay, also. Although this bus was parked and without passengers, it seems buses have just been accident magnets lately – maybe they should be painted that chartreuse green color some of the firetrucks are. (It wouldn’t have made a difference in this case, I know).

On a slightly related note, I wonder if they teach student drivers what the best course of action is if they were to experience a medical problem. It might not affect young people as often, but it’s the only time instruction is given.

Again, I hope the driver is okay.

    tht dont mke noo sense

  17. Read Carefully on September 9th, 2011 7:26 am

In this case, I don’t believe the color of the bus had anything to do with the accident. It states she “might have been experiencing a medical problem.” Please read the articles more carefully before assuming something else. Have a nice day and be safe!

WOW! I agree with Kim. People have been running into these school buses left and right, since school started. I hope the lady is going to be alright.

I hope the lady is ok & glad nobody else was hurt. There has been to much school bus accidents lately.

  21. kim on September 9th, 2011 1:35 am

I think we should change the colors of the buses. Yellow apparently isn’t bright enough to keep from getting run over. I hope the lady is ok and not suffering from something serious.
