IRS Revokes Tax Exempt Status Of Hundreds Of Local Organizations

June 10, 2011

The Internal Revenue Service has revoked the tax exempt status of over 250 organizations in the North Escambia area because they did not file legally required annual reports for three consecutive years.

While the IRS says that many of these organizations are defunct, there are some recognizable groups on the list.

The Cantonment Volunteer Fire Department, the Carver Community Center Association in Century, the Jay Volunteer Fire Department, the Nokomis (Ala.) Volunteer Fire Department, the Turtle Point Foundation in Flomaton, the Pine Forest High Quarterback Club and the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Auxiliary are among the groups losing tax exempt status on a list announced Thursday by the IRS.

Congress passed the Pension Protection Act (PPA) in 2006, requiring most tax-exempt organizations to file an annual information return or notice with the IRS. For small organizations, the law imposed a filing requirement for the first time in 2007.  In addition, the law automatically revokes the tax-exempt status of any organization that does not file required returns or notices for three consecutive years.

The groups that have had their non-profit status revoked cannot appeal the decision, according to the IRS. Instead, they must reapply for tax exempt status.

For several years, the IRS has made an extensive effort to inform organizations of the changes in the law through multiple outreach and education avenues, including mailing more than one million notices to organizations that had not filed. In addition, last year the IRS published a list of at-risk groups and gave smaller organizations an additional five months to file required notices and come into compliance.  That list was referenced or published in numerous media outlets, including NorthEscambia.com.

Groups like the  chambers of commerce in Century and Jay; the fire departments in McDavid and Cantonment; community centers in Century, Byrneville, Davisville; and many more social, civic and charitable organizations were on a list published last fall by NorthEscambia.com. Many of the groups took notice, completed the necessary paperwork and retained their IRS non-profit status.

“It really turned out to be a pretty easy thing to do,” Margie McCall (pictured) of the Century Chamber of Commerce said. “I was able to do the form in about 15 minutes.”

The following North Escambia area groups have had their tax exempt status revoked, according to a list published Thursday by the IRS. Many are now defunct. In order to determine the tax exempt status of any organization, contact the IRS.

Air Conditioning Contractors – 5555 Bauer Rd

Forget the daycare, why is a a/c contractor tax exempt?………

  2. Trish on June 10th, 2011 1:22 pm

There are a lot of requirements for non-profit organizations. If there is a lack of support or membership then it falls by the wayside. If that happens the government is not losing money because there was no money to support the reason for the non-profit. Non-profits require a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and members to hold monthly meetings. Then someone to run fund raisers to support what the organization is trying to do. Now days no one wants to actually volunteer or join something and DO ANY WORK. Sure they love to say they are part of something but they don’t actually want to participate on a regular basis. Personally, I think that is why so many fail.

If these are businesses that did not get their paperwork in for tax exempt, think of how many did but really do not need to be tax exempt. This is just in our area. How many across the country? No wonder our government has no money.

They all look so legit too!

    REGARDING:
“why would a daycare be tax exempt?”

If it were started and run for non profit purposes, it would likely qualify.

Many churches start such things, not to make money but as a service to the community. Most if not all of the above were formed as public service.

Just wondering how a daycare could claim a tax-exempt status to start with?
Two in Atmore—why would a daycare be tax exempt?

  7. dad on June 10th, 2011 5:48 am

Never realized there were so many organizations that are tax exempt and these are just a few of them. Seems like it would have been easy to take 15 minutes and fill out a form in the last three years to keep it. I would have if it kept me from paying.
