Deputies: Man Opened Fire Because Business Was Out Of Crawfish

June 2, 2011

Investigators say the man that opened fire with an AK-47 along busy Highway 29 in Ensley Sunday evening did so because a seafood market had sold out of crawfish.

Larry Wayne Kelly, 42, is being held on numerous felony weapons charges in the Escambia County Jail. His bond is set at $575,000.

About 7 p.m., multiple 911 calls of a tan Ford Ranger driving erratically at a high rate of speed and shots fire in the area of the Ensley Walmart. Deputies were unable to immediately determine where the gunshots had originated.

Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies were able to later determine that the gunfire came from a Ford Ranger driven by Kelly and gave chase. The short pursuit came to an end when Kelly crashed into another pickup and a deputy’s vehicle at Palafox and Ensley streets.

Kelly called the L&T Seafood Market, located south of Walmart on Highway 29, about a dozen times during a 30 minute period that began just before 5 p.m. During the first call, Kelly reportedly told the business owner that his business was a “joke” and  became “incredibly irate” that the store was out of crawfish, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. Many of the calls went unanswered because the business closed at 5:00.

At about 7 p.m., witnesses saw Kelly fire numerous times at the seafood market from his truck. Investigators later found 11 bullet holes in the building where round entered the building through the walls, roof awning, windows and doors. The seafood business was closed at the time, but adjacent businesses were open, but the shots came within 1,000 feet of persons and employees entering or leaving.

Inside Kelly’s Ford Ranger, deputies found a 12 gauge shotgun, a 38 Special, a Luger TEC-9 and an AK-47 — all loaded. In the backseat of the truck, deputies found the book “The Sociopath Next Door”.

According to deputies, Kelly said that he is a “sovereign citizen”, not subject to the law or the orders of law enforcement officers.

According to court records, Kelly is facing 27 separate  felony charges in connection with incident, including multiple counts of discharging a firearm from a vehicle, firing into a building, eluding law enforcement, assault of an officer and aggravated assault.

Let’s blame the Learned Elders of Zion, no! it was the Free Masons. A man has a mental crisis and all of a sudden it is a global conspiracy.

Hey folks. Read up on the Sovereign Citizen Movement. It’s scary. There are lots of law officers who’ve had run-ins with these individuals and been shot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_citizen

“What about rapist. Child molesters. Serial killers? I think that’s worse”

Bad is bad but you could make a case for what Joe said.

The others target specific people in general and can be guarded against–poorly, but it is possible.
    Remember that No means NO!
Remember anything can be used as a weapon for self defense.
    Avoid dark places.
Stay near people, don’t wander off.
    Beware of strangers.
Assume felons actually WERE guilty and may be dangerous
    Guard your children.
Keep up with which sexual predators just moved into your neighborhood.
    Notice strange behavior.
    –to name a few.

When a person goes nuts and suddenly just throws lead in every direction, everybody is a potential victim–not just the women, not just the children, not just the brunettes or whoever the serial killer is fixated on–even ME or you.

I’d just as soon we didn’t have any of them and don’t know how you’d weigh their danger and/or evil but they are at least comparable.

You say he is the worst kind of criminal? What about rapist. Child molesters. Serial killers? I think that’s worse

Aww, now there you go, see? He isn’t mentally unbalanced, he’s a good man, he just snapped, you know, reached his “breaking point” because that store was out of crawfish! Anyone of you could have the same reaction if you went to get crawfish and they were out!

Do you supporters realize how idiotic you sound?

  11. jcellop on June 3rd, 2011 12:36 pm

this fellow is mentally ill and most likely had a psychotic breakdown of some variety- his behavior has been irrational and abnormal, to say the least- a reportedly kind, upstanding church going man who digresses into a violent, multi arsenal, irrational individual firing indescrimanently into businesses, making repeated, obsessive calls to the business…this is clearly a man in need of a thorough mental examination and then, treatment.

This should be a warning to all you food junkies. Make sure the food you become addicted to is allways available, and in season. Withdrawals can cause you to do stupid things.

A friend of mine attended the same church as this man. My friend told me this is 180 degrees from the man he knew. In the last few years many people have had thier lives thrown into upheavel by financial problems and who knows what else. I found humor in this at first, but now I think but for the grace of God, there go I!

  16. M on June 3rd, 2011 5:20 am

    Joe….right now your the terrorist.

  17. joe on June 3rd, 2011 1:07 am

when your actions instill fear and terror in the public and seem to target no one specifically,
you have committed what has become known as “Domestic Terrorism”
This man is a no more than a terrorist and criminal,
his intent was to harm and or kill the public.
This is not compassion, this is not consideration, this is a violent crime!

  18. joe on June 3rd, 2011 1:00 am

“Please friends and family …no more posting.” ………this is good advice
as those people speaking his praise sound “sick” themselves.
I have no respect for anyone defending this man.
this man is a criminal and the worst kind. the kind that dismisses all care and concern for others. his actions were violent and had a deadly intent. so he will get his day in court, we know he did it, and his excuse is just a poor excuse.

  19. RamThis on June 3rd, 2011 12:17 am

Yeah, a guy firing an AK-47 blindly into a store from a Ford Ranger, while a swat team’s worth of weapons laying next to him fully loaded and ready, sure seems compassionate. The only compassion he had, was for seafood, and mayhem. I guess next time Im at McDonalds and the soda fountain is out of Dr Pepper I’ll just start Ronal McDonald on fire and shoot the hamburgler execution style in the play area and say I was just having a bad day and honest Im really compassionate Im just having a breakdown! My bad!

  20. nun on June 2nd, 2011 9:42 pm

Please friends and family …no more posting. Alot of these posters are just trolls. They comment and argue with and hurt people on every story that comes out. They have no concern with anyones feelings and just enjoy the sport of trying to get us upset. They obviously have nothing better to do because they are on here day and night just looking for someones life to pick apart and prey on. What is important is what we know.

“There will always be a part, and always a very large part of every community, that have no care but for themselves, and whose care for themselves reaches little further than impatience of immediate pain, and eagerness for the nearest good”

As usual, if you find yourself on the side of the issue that has some first hand facts, you are amazed that the stuff the SD releases is not entirely accurate.

Yes he had a breakdown but yes he is an incredibly compassionate person. There is no excuse that justifies his actions or the danger that he put others in.

THE BOOK WAS NOT HIS>>>>the owner of the book has already admitted that.

bamadude said…Dog gone it!!! No crawfish…well that explains it!! Heck, I thought he just cut loose with a gun in public for no good reason.

I said…(chuckle) Got to agree with you on this one, bamadude. Some things we just gotta stand up for! Why they arrested this man at all mystifies me. Of course there is still one issue here. How was he gonna get the crawfish since they were closed anyway? I guess I don’t wanna even think about that one.

I’m not totally convinced this man was thinking rationally. And I thought Atlanta was full of crazy people.

  29. MM on June 2nd, 2011 2:24 pm

Just like in the movie, “Falling Down.”

  30. deBugger on June 2nd, 2011 1:58 pm

Well, thank God no one was hurt. I’ve got a relative that works in a business that is easily within range of the weapon he was firing, so this one hit (no pun intended) rather close to home.

Now, for the jokes in (possibly) bad taste—

“Man, that was one Crazy Cajun!”

“Look out for the Mudbug Maniac!”

    “I’m Koo-koo, Koo-koo— Koo-koo for Cookin’ Crawfish!”

  31. Jessica on June 2nd, 2011 1:55 pm

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when he told the cops that one. Can you imagine the looks on their faces?

  32. Really? on June 2nd, 2011 1:36 pm

I have to agree w/ KRod, i wouldn’t even have told the police that. I would’ve have made up something tougher than that, i bet they laughed in his face!! “So what you in jail for?” “oh i was pissed b/c i couldnt get any crawfish at this one seafood place out 20 more, i could’ve went to.” “so i fell like firing my AK, let me repeat that part again lol MY AK-47 going down a busy Hwy!”

“Sovereign citizen”, they just had a special report on on FOX News about these people. Very dangerous person to law enforcement if confronted. Very well armed too.

  35. KRod on June 2nd, 2011 12:42 pm

Let’s see… the last time I went to purchase any kind of crawfish, crayfish or any other seafood I did not need a AK-47 to complete my order! Just saying!

  36. Bama54 on June 2nd, 2011 12:41 pm

This incident could have gotten him killed not alone him kill someone else for “NO” crawfish!! God help our country!!
