Escambia County deputies chased a horse across Century Sunday night, finally cornering the “suspect” at the back of Showalter Park.

Deputies first received a call about 7:00 of a horse on the loose near Century Woods Apartments on Highway 4. The horse then made its way across Highway 29 and through neighborhoods around Showalter Park and Carver Century School.

The sheriff’s department helicopter was called to the area to assist in tracking the horse because it posed a threat to traffic, especially as it crossed North Century Boulevard (Highway 29).

The helicopter was forced to leave the scene for fuel after tracking the horse in the cemetery behind the ballfields at Showalter Park.

Nearby residents Ericka Nelson and her husband arrived at the scene with food and a halter, quickly catching the horse about 8:30. A horse trailer was brought to the scene about 9:00.

Nelson, a second grade teacher at Bratt Elementary School, has horses on her property in Century. The name of the owner of the horse was not immediately available, but it did not belong to Nelson.
