Navy Drops Dismissal Of Tate Grad Sailor Found In Bunk With Another Male

April 9, 2011

The Navy has dropped dismissal proceedings against a Cantonment sailor who was facing unprofessional conduct charges after being found in bed with another male.

Petty Officer  Stephen Jones, stationed at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Charleston, S.C., learned Friday that the Navy was rescinding his discharge orders.

Jones, a Tate High School graduate, was reportedly found asleep in a bunk in February with another male soldier. The two men, who were both clothed, claimed they simply fell asleep while watching The Vampire Diaries on a computer, but their commander ruled that Jones “willfully failed to exhibit professional conduct” and discharge proceedings began.

His attorney claimed that the Navy wanted to discharge Jones because the Navy suspected his was gay, but there was no proof or admission of homosexuality.

“We strongly suspected that his command was trying to find a round about way to discharge Jones because it suspected him of being gay, and we simply were not willing to stand by and watch a new version of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ emerge under the new label of ‘unprofessional conduct,’” a statement from Servicemembers United Executive Director Alexander Nicholson said. Servicemembers United is the nation’s largest organization of gay and lesbian troops and veterans.

WOW!! It amazes me that we have spent so much time on this situation when there are far more important things to worry about. Most everyone on here has been arguing about something that is really not our business at all. I wonder!! If we spent this much time fighting and arguing on something that really mattered, how much more we could accomplish. IMAGINE THAT…WE MIGHT ACTUALLY GET SOMETHING DONE THAT REALLY DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE!! LISTEN UP PEOPLE CHOOSE YOUR BATTLES. THIS DIFFENTLY ISN’T ONE OF THEM!!

Having served in the US Navy, I’ve watched all this wondering how it would blow up.

William is right when he states that the young man, his family and his lawyer have made this a media circus.

Bobby, I’m not sure who told you that men and women don’t use the same bathrooms in the military. They do. Most commands are fortunate enough to have space for both, but not all. Also, if you’re in the lower ranks, you clean those heads regardless of what your sex is and the men/women sign on the door.

The UCMJ is there for a reason: to promote and ensure a functioning military, able to answer the call at any time, in any place, in the defense of our nation. The rules are time tested and each have a place.

As a society, we have pushed the envelope on so many issues and the military is slow to “catch up” because the military is always the first to be used for guinea pigs but the last to be recognized for the good they do.

The military and each of its members are supposed to function as a team, not individuals (and that includes sexuality), because that same individuality can destroy a team. I don’t think that those who’ve never served get that. You are only as strong as your weakest link.

That being said, this issue should never have gone beyond the command level, and those in command should have paid very close attention to the motives of all involved. Hopefully, wisdom is gained as you gain in rank and stature, but, sadly, it doesn’t always happen.

    @bobby,
What…do you think you can catch homosexuality from toilet seats or something?Wake up and get a clue. I have worked around many gay woman and men and can proudly say that they took pride in what they did. They worked just as hard if not harder to do their work. I too believe that the don’t ask don’t tell should stay in effect because there are still to many homophobics out there that might try to hurt our valueable military personnel and blaming it on an accident.
    Just my opinion.

Separation of church and state, whatever flavor of religion you might be gives you no right to impose your religious beliefs on this man.

Despite all this defending gay/lesbianism. It is sin in the KJV bible and is not inherited. If GOD calls something a sin and there are many verses that can be used, then HE provides a way out for that transgression. Man with man, man with beast and ….. are listed as sin.
What Man has done is to try to distort the Bible, water it down, ignore it or try to discredit it by saying it is fiction/untrue. That way man (male and female ) can continue their sinful ways and not feel guilt about their actions. Adam tried to blame Eve and so on…
As a retired Air Force TSGT, / Supervisor I know a little about the problems of gay /lesbian lifestyle and the problems it causes in the ranks. I supervised up to 40 troops. Discipline and Order are required in a military unit! I had more lesbians in my later years. Gay men were less open and a little harder to manage. Lesbianism seemed to be more acceptable in the ranks, because they wanted the female quota.. It is not a matter of IF THEY CAN DO THEIR JOB. It is more in maintaining a functional unit with outside influnces at a minimum so that the mission can be accomplished. Most of my career , I was a “fatboy” I had a stack of medals, a ream of “attaboy” letters. Job well done. It did not matter, I was a fatboy (10 pounds overweight) so I was reprimanded, denied promotion and blacklisted, BUT every officer came to me for advise and guidance. Was I capable of doing my job? YOU BET! Did people respect me? YOU BET. Am I bitter? NO WAY! If I coulb be back in the job I’d go in a minute.
It is a matter of reputation, respect and common sense ,not to let things get to me.
Even if the young man is not gay, He should have had sense enough to know the appearance of his actions were wrong, especially in a barracks/dorm environment. There were tables and chairsavailable. And yes, All sorts of dastardly deeds have gone on in barracks, I have seen and could give you a list a mile long. That doesnt make anty of it right and many have been ejected form the military for their actions.
I concur with hawghead jarhead! I have to pick on a Marine> He is 100% correct and by the way, I have nothing but respect for the Marines! They have a very hard job to do while us AF pukes get the steaks, warm bunk and air conditioning/heat.
Obama is out of his mind for even suggesting of doing away with the MARINES!
Semper FI! Did I even spellit right! I salute you brother!
Now all you goodie 2 shoes can rip me a new one if you wish but I stand behind what I said.

If gays want to serve then let them serve, but not openly. Go back to the old standard and let our miltitary get back to doing what they train to do and that is protect us. The military does not need this kind of distraction. If gay people were really interested in serving their country, then they would not make an issue over this. It’s all about “15″ minutes of fame. If you are gay then serve and follow the rules, if you don’t want to follow the rules, then face the consequences of your actions. Quit trying to force the rest of the military, and for that fact the world, to conform to your beliefs and lifestyle. As a former Marine I know this is going to make some of you mad, but “gays should not openly serve in the military”.

    To: obvious

All I was trying to say is that there are so many things bad happening in the world and people on here are judging a young man that is not harming anyone, and fighting for my freedom as well as yours…..as for me saying Thou shalt not judge others…

    Luke 6:3
Judge not and you will not be judged.

    James 4:11-12
Do not speak evil against on another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law.

    Romans 2:1-3
Therefore you have no excuse, O man, everyone of you who judges.

HE is the only one who will judge,

I do read the Bible…..Don’t Judge me!!!

It became our business when his lawyer held news conferences, his family started doing TV interviews and various national groups starting issuing press releases on his behalf. He and his family decided and worked hard to make it public. He *wanted* media coverage.

We will not ignore a story about someone in our communities that has made the national news (CNN, FOX, AP, NPR, NBC/MSNBC, CBS the list goes on and on plus all of the major local media). What kind of paper would that make us?

If you would read the bible and then be able to quote it correctly and in context…..then you might see clearly why our country is where it is at.

As to child abuse, it was said that what people do behind closed doors doesn’t’ affect us that are not there. Evidently that the fallacy of that generalization is OBVIOUS to some …namely those who have been effected by the events behind closed doors.

This protector of our country, fighter of our freedom, did absolutely nothing to you and does not effect your life in any way. Stop throwing religion into everything….we all have a right to be who we are and not be judged by those who think they are above reproach…..SO much saddness and poverty in this country right now, with people losing jobs, homes..everything just crumbling…..and you worry about who someone was caught sleeping with…..REALLY?

It sounds like they weren’t stationed on a ship, they they were fully clothed in the barracks(sort of like a dorm room) and were only watching a movie, they fell asleep and the roommate was trying to get the guy in trouble so he could have the room to himself and probably invite his friends/or girlfriend over to spend time with him. Some roommates(shipmates can be jerks). You can’t like everybody. It happens all the time.Everyone just likes to jump to conclusions. The sad part is the guy probably isn’t even gay, but him and his friend aren’t going to be friends anymore and are going to get teased and harassed everyday and anywhere they get stationed at. It’s sad to be them.

Reprimand the young man, remind him of the code of conduct, and teach him to do better. Don’t run his dirty laundry up the flag pole. Slap his hand and be done with it. A lot of junk in this world is attributable to being “young and dumb” and is curable, mostly with time and experience. Leave him in the military and let him serve and for heaven’s sake, let him alone! We all learn some things in life by trial and error. He’s probably “got it” by now and won’t repeat that error. Cut him some slack!

It is an offence of Military Code of Ethics, and it is punishable, (especially in combat areas or as was inferred a barrack. Yes, I believe you are wrong fraternization does hurt the Military Structure. Since this is America and OUR Military fights for my right to my opinion I am able to voice my opinion also. What is the Navy trying to do here. There was no proof that anything went on between these two men, if there were, I am sure they would have been DNA evidence to back the Navy story up.

I agree the Navy again has egg on it’s Face. Also, for the CO to come through with these charges. It is not like these two enlisted guys were a upstanding as some of their Officer, which set such shinning examples. They could have been re-created history and been part of the “Tail-Hook” gang of hte 1980’s or to bring things more up-to-date, they could have posted their activities on you-tube like the Navy Capt Owen Honors and his Raunchy video on the USS Enterprise. In any case, glad this guy was cleared of any actions.

As far as the the two offenses..
Whether it be male or female fraternizing is not suppose to happen and there are charges that go with that. Second in a bunk implies they were in a barrack, there is the second offence

Get real…male or female….do you really think actions do not go on in barracks and fraternization between members of the military is happening every day. Whether it be male or female fraternizing is not suppose to happen and there are charges that go with that. Second in a bunk implies they were in a barrack, there is the second offence. Those are charges that should be filed.

  32. think harder on April 9th, 2011 12:42 pm

Well, I respectfully disagree. Everything I do affects me and shapes who I am whether I do things in public or in private. Who I am affects everyone I come in contact with. Who I am affects my goals and therefore my actions.

If someone abuses their children at home and are saints at work and or on the battlefield, then why can’t you say they are heroes when they are defending your life and your childrens lives? Because what they are doing in private overshadows the good they are doing elsewhere. Being gay is not the natural order of things. If it was, then procreation would never have taken place and the first humans would have lived, died and that would have been the end of it.

I was born a sinner and my natural desire is to sin. To lie to get what I want and to get away with anything I do that could cause me problems. I want to blame others for my mistakes and make excuses for my behaviour. I want to to live the life of a rock star and spend my days in oblivion due to various drugs and live promiscuously. And if do those things it is a choice, I can’t blame being a lying, cheating, thieving drug abusing party animal on my genes and get a free pass. If I shoplift, it causes retailers to raise prices, if I cheat on my wife behind closed doors, it means I am not faithful to a covenant and then I can’t expect my children to fare any better. If my bisexual uncle teaches me how to be promiscuous and abuses me (he did) then his actions affect me. Forget the abuse, his claims of how great a promiscuous lifestyle is shaped how I tried to live out my teen years and the first years of my adult life. 25 years later, I still battle those memories and demons. You have no right to tell me what happens behind closed doors between 2 consenting adults doesn’t affect others. Because those consenting adults share their beliefs with the next generation and it is a corrosive repetitive cycle that degenerates each cycle. In 3 generations we have gone from from a Man and Woman with children as a family unit, to acceptance of a same sex couple without children, to same sex couples with children. What is the next cycle? Pedophile couples without children? Then Pedophile couples with children?

Wake Up….Soldier or not …a liar is a liar, a thief is a thief and serving their country does not make lying and stealing acceptable.

But you may be right, our country does seem to be headed in the right direction doesn’t it. I mean truth is at an all time high in Washington. Our economy has never been better. Special interests groups are honest, open and are always looking out for your families best interest. Maybe you are right, the further we get from absolute truth and what the bible says the better things go. Right? Now that we are enlightened you have never felt safer at home? Wake up America.

Your personal attacks do nut hurt, anger or bother me either, because I know where I stand and the basis of the stand.

    @Name

I have worked in a very small cubicle for 6 months with 11 men. The
bathroom was right next door and you could hear everything. Let me
tell you, it doesn’t get any worse than that (in the cubicle or the bathroom). This is just guys and they are very intolerant. Women have to be much more so because it is a man’s world in the work place, but some of us didn’t have a choice
except to join them in their world. I have been bumped, grinded on, fondled, etc. but I had two mouths to feed when my husband decided he liked another woman.

That doesn’t mean they gave ME a break. So cry ME a RIVER!

  34. dgh on April 9th, 2011 12:28 pm

This should not be an issue; other countries have had gays and lesbians in service with no issue. To those afraid to go to even go the bathroom with a gay person in there, get over it. Is your ability to say no that weak?

As to religious views, these should not be factored in and the fact is evolution teaches us to expect variations in sex, sexuality and gender. We are not all born ‘perfect’; some can have the chromosomes of one sex and the physical characteristics of the other as one example, so there are variations, and to condemn them with Biblical writings is to be picking and choosing text to support a prejudice. I know many Christians who ignore the rules dealing with women being unclean once a month, not planting mixed seeds in a garden, not wearing blends, killing disobedient children, not eating pork, shell fish, etc. The Biblical writings have too many events that did not happen and too many ancient rituals or beliefs that are not suitable for today. The two creations tales in Chapters 1 and 2 are not to be taken literally, there was no world wide flood, there was no mass exodus (in fact archeology shows most of the Jews were already from the region) and so on. So we should not be prejudice against variations of sexuality no more than we should be prejudice against different skin tones.

FIRST OFF LET ME SAY I AM NOT GAY AND WELL SAID TO ALL WHO HAVE WRITTEN. WE ALL KNOW SOME ONE WHO IS GAY. YOU MAY NOT KNOW THEY ARE BUT THEY ARE ALL PART OF THE HUMAN RACE I HEARD A MINISTER FROM A GAY CHURCH (YES THEY BELIEVE IN GOD JUST LIKE MOST OF US) MAKE THE STATEMENT THAT GAYS ARE BORN THAT WAY—THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD NOT CHOOSE THAT LIFE STYLE BECAUSE OF THE TREATMENT SO MANY RECEIVE FROM THE “STRAIGHTS”. THERE ARE STUDIES THAT BACK THIS UP AND ALSO OTHERS THAT SAY THAT SOME WHO HATE GAYS ARE IN TRUTH GAY AT HEART, THEY JUST DON’T ACT ON IT FOR FEAR OF BEING CAUGHT. BEFORE I GET BLASTED ON THIS AND TOLD GOD EVEN HATES GAYS PLEASE RELECT ON A SIMPLE FACT: THE BIBLE CONTAINS SIX (6) ADMONISHMENTS TO HOMOSEXUALS, AND 362 TO HETEROSEXUALS. THIS DOESN’T MEAN GOD DOESN’T LOVE HETEROSEXUAL. MAYBE THEY JUST NEED MORE SUPERVISION.

It really doesn’t matter what you think, it is what God says that matters. It is not a matter of not loving or hate, but it is a matter of disagreeing with the conduct.

So if a soldier wants to go home and abuses their children its ok because it is behind closed doors?

A soldiers conduct is representative of their entire country, and the small percentage of gay people in the US scream loud enough that it sounds like they are a huge group when in reality they are not and they do not truly represent the beliefs this country was founded on, nor what the majority believe today.

The people screaming tolerance are not very tolerant.

OMG THIS IS SO SAD. NOT THAT HE GOT CAUGHT BUT THE FACT THAT EVERYT little THING THAT GOES ON IS PUBLICIZED. THIS IS PETTY OFFICER JONES’S BUSINESS NOT OURS. IF IT CAME DOWN TO THE BOTTOM LINE OF HIM SAVING ONE OF THE PEOPLE’S LIVES THAT WAS CONSIDERING DIMISSING HIM FROM THE NAVY IM PRETTY SURE THEM IT WOULDN’T MATTER IF HE WA GAY OR NOT. AS LONG AS HE IS DOING HIS JOB, IT STILL SHOULDN’T MATTER..

I know that church says that it is not right, but if the person can shoot a gun and protect my children, Im not sayin a word about their personal life. Whomever protects my children are heroes.

Well said “dont understand” I agree 100%, couldn’t have said it better myself….my thing is..who has the right to judge someone because of who they love, who they make love to or are loved by???? Everyone has the right to be loved and love. I don’t understand why so many people have a problem with this…I really don’t care what other people do behind closed doors and I sure hope they don’t care what I do…noones buisness….so why such a big deal about gay’s in this country????? They are hard working, honest and very good friends, and if I may say so excellant soldiers!!!!! Get over it people, way too many problems in this country right now to be worrying about who someone is sleeping with!!!!!

this time, i think that the navy may have a little “egg on their face”.

  52. don't understand on April 9th, 2011 3:58 am

I’ve never understood why some think gay’s don’t belong in the service. I think they have a right to fight for their country just like straight people do. I’m sure many gays died for my right to have my opinion just like many straights did. I’ve heard the arguement about demoralizing the troops, etc., from the mouths of those who spit on Viet Nam Vets and have tried to make those who have served during the last 8 or so years feel guilty about Iraq or Afghanistan. Well, I’m here to tell you I’m proud of all our servicemen and women – gay, straight, purple, or gray! Thank You All for serving and protecting me and mine!!
