Malnourished Horses, Pony Removed From Century Property During Investigation

February 7, 2023

An animal cruelty case near Century is under investigation.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a complaint Saturday in the 7600 block of Killam Road, between Highway 4 and Highway 4A.

According to the ECSO, the investigation involves animals including horses, a small pony and a goat.

“The owners moved away sometime last year,” said ECSO spokesperson Morgan Lewis. “They would then sometimes stop by and feed them.”

Lewis said the horses and pony both appeared to be malnourished.

According to ECSO, charges in the case are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Two horses and the pony were removed from the property, according to Panhandle Equine Rescue (PER) President Diane Lowery. One of the horses, she said, did not survive the night.

The only horse rescue in Escambia County, the non-profit Panhandle Equine Rescue was founded by a small group of concerned citizens with a mission to rescue, rehabilitate and provide adoption services for abused, neglected and abandoned equines. PER is authorized by the court system to investigate equine cruelty cases in Escambia County.

For more information on Panhandle Equine Rescue and how to donate to the organization visit www.panhandleequinerescue.org. The group is specifically seeking donations to help with the care of the surviving horse and pony.

To all of you, I agree with you.

Put some action behind your emotional words, PLEASE help out the Panhandle Rescue at one of the links they provided. They didn’t charge a fee, very easy, even a small amount would help. Theses poor things are going to need so much care!
I know it’s not our responsibility, but show some love to them.

“Is there a particular reason these “people” aren’t identified in the story?”

It’s spelled out in the story. They have not been charged. Yet.

Worst part is. They didn’t move that far away and their parents live right beside where these horses were and didn’t care or do anything either.

This is so sad, I hope and pray that they send these idiots to prison for a few years, and they are never able to own another animal. Walking around here like your high society and you can’t even feed these poor animals. You need to do without food and see how you feel, the justice system needs to take these cases more serious and give these types of people prison time. And on top of everything else the big horse didn’t live a night away from their it was so malnourished. I hope they throw the book at you animal killers. No I’m not sorry, somebody needed to say all this, ain’t no sugarcoating this.

We as a community need to help this rescue out. If it wasn’t for them there would be nowhere for these animals to get the help they need. Like someone here said if everyone gave a little it would add up. We need to help them help these precious animals. They have suffered too much for too long. Thank you Panhandle Equine Rescue for everything you do .

Please help this organization out, they have been doing great work for years! Strictly volunteer! This breaks my heart, I can’t imagine doing this in person. You are angels!
If everyone could give even just a little bit, it could add up to help in this mission!!

Pretty pathetic how these idiots abuse these animals, maybe they need a dose of their own medicine. If you can’t take care of your pets, maybe you should think twice before getting them!
