Trinity Conquers Northview In State Semifinal Game (With Three Photo Galleries)

December 4, 2010

The Northview Chiefs’ state championship dreams were crushed Friday night by the Conquerors of Trinity Christian in Jacksonville, 49-14, in the Class 1A State Semifinals.

The finals stats were good for the Chiefs, controlling the ball three times more than Trinity, three times the running plays and twice as many passes. But five Conqueror drives in five minutes gave Trinity over three times the points on the board.

The Chiefs (11-2) took the lead with 5:47 to go in the first quarter on a 12-yard touchdown run from Dustin Yuhasz to cap an 80-yard, six minute drive. The point after kick was  blocked, and Northview held a 6-0 lead. But on the next sequence, Trinity answered with a 12-yard touchdown run of their own and a good kick. The Conquerors were on top 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, the Trinity advantage increased to 14-6 with a 22-yard touchdown pass with 8:35 on the clock.

“We did what we needed to do in the first half,” Northview Head Coach Sid Wheatley said.”We controlled the ball about 18 of 24 minutes in the first half. Taking the lead with that first touchdown was big, and overall we controlled the ball well.”

The first few minutes of the third were also looking up for the Chiefs. Trinity scored on a 15 yard run on the opening drive of the second half. Down 21-6, a 2-yard touchdown scramble from Roderick Woods put it at 21-12. The Chiefs were successful on a two point conversion attempt, put Northview within reach at 21-14.

But then there was the last five minutes of the third. “In those next five minutes, we lost the game. We didn’t play well at all during those five minutes,” Wheatley said.

In those five minutes, the Conquerors conquered the Chiefs with successive TD’s — a 20-yard pass, a 23-yard pass and a 23-yard fumble return — to end the quarter at 49-14. The fourth quarter was scoreless.

It was 1979 when the Eagles of Ernest Ward High School last brought the only modern time Class A football championship back to the area. Ernest Ward would later merge with the Century Blackcats to create Northview. Friday night marked the first ever Semifinal appearance by a Northview team.

“I”m extremely proud of the season we had. They were the first team to go that far in the playoffs, and that says a lot,” Wheatley said. “We are going to work hard and  build on it next year.”

Keith – I appreciate your post and totally understand where you are coming from on the issues. Your Northview team played their hearts out and as you said, for 2 1/2 quarters gave Trinity all it wanted or could handle. As a private school that is actually smaller than Northview, we do have the advantage of a larger geographical region from which to draw students. As a member of the FHSAA we, like every other member, are not allowed to recruit athletes, but we do have the advantage of not being bound by geographical boundaries as it pertains to where our students originate It is an advantage that the new FHSAAA rural classification will see to somehow address. In any case, the Northview chiefs had a great season and your entire community should be very proud of them. The whole team played hard, but in particular #25, #4 and #8 were special and very dangerous. God bless you and your team. You guys have a great season next year !

TCA fans, parents, whatever you are. After reading the comments in a local paper of a local Coach speaking what I deemed as discouragement to our team concerning their game Vs Trinity ,And after watching our local TV sports program refering to the 3rd round as being the place that our playoff run would stop, I researched your school before the game. And I determined that your team was not as intimidating as you appeared and shared my post for the Northview community on Northescambia.com. It was an attempt to encourage our football team not to be intimidated at all by the talk that they were going to be destroyed by your private school. I am an encourager and I take offense to people speaking discouragement in any situation. I never predicted the out come of the game, only that our boys would successfully stand toe to toe with your team. And for 2 1/2 quarters that is exactly what they did until simple mistakes took their toll. And any negative comments made against your school by myself before the game was in response to the wonderful Trinity fan posting on Northescambia that our season was about to end. Sure it would have been proper for me to just ignore the individual but I am human and sometimes I struggle myself to just be the bigger person. And dont waste your time making excuses for your fans, they were chanting “Orlando” in an effort to smear our loss in our faces. In the 5 years I have been associated with Northview Football, I have never been to a game where our fans treated any other team like that. As a matter of fact I have been associated with high school football in the Pensacola area for the past 25 years and have never seen any school in this area attempt to antagonize another school in that way which is why I took such a quick offense to what I saw and heard.

And lets talk about Trinity Security supposedly unlocking a door to a building in order that a player could step inside and get his belongings. All I will permit myself to say any further concerning this subject is LOL!!! You stated what you have heard, I have stated what I saw!!!!

And it is with a heart felt apology that I tell Trinity Christian School I’m sorry for taking a shot at your Christian Atmosphere. The Lord has delt with me on this subject and enlightened me to the fact that your Christianity is not for me to judge .I do owe and am giving a public apology for expressing frustration in such a tasteless manner.

God Bless You All And Have A Safe Trip To Orlando!!

  3. TC on December 6th, 2010 12:42 pm

Keith – the denied access was either to the building or just the locked room where the Northview Teams gear was being held. Not sure.

  4. TC on December 6th, 2010 10:05 am

Keith – the kids from Trinity were shouting ORLANDO ! because they were excited to be off from classes this Friday to attend a State Championship Game. That’s part of it and probably occured at every high school game Friday. There was no disrespect meant by any means. I really can’t believe you or anyone else would take it that way. The guy with the bullhorn is irritating for sure, but he doesn’t represent the 2500 other Trinity fans who were at the game who are not “classless or arrogant” as you called all of us. As far as the security issue you are referring to, there are very different accounts of the incident. From what we heard, the incident started with a Northview player being ejected from the game and then heading to a locked school building where the Northview team was housed. Trinity security would have obviously been there, because the only way to get into the building would be for the Trinity security personnel to unlock the building. The player was denied access to the building based upon his treatment (verbal and non-verbal) of the security personnel. When the security returned to the building shortly after the incident, at least one window at been broken and the Trinity security summoned the Jacksonville Police Department. The incident will be investigated for sure.
Keith – I reviewed all of your posts about this game and it seems you were anti-Trinity before you ever arrived. It’s really too bad – other Northview fans like the ones I spoke with before and after the game really enjoyed the experience of final four high school football …

  5. Keith on December 5th, 2010 8:24 pm

    TCA Parent,
I am not bitter because we lost.I was over that before I left your parking lot. It was the disrespect that your fans showed us by chanting ORLANDO repeatedly at the end of the game and the loud mouth on the mega phone, not to mention your so called security that I hope I have a chance to testify against regarding what I saw unfold. Maybe your school should do a better job at guarding your own reputation.

And Bob, I didnt lose my cool until I watched thru my camcorder lens as your so called security dirt bags followed one of our players across the parking lot and into the locker room while he was all alone and ruffed him up and then disappeared like the Cowards that they are. And then lied to the cops and claimed they were never in the locker room. I hope his parents get a lawyer! Myself and another witness would love to share what we saw!

  6. TCA parent on December 5th, 2010 7:23 pm

Your team had a great season. Congratulations. However, some of you obviously have some bitterness in your loss. Maybe because you’ve never been there, this is your first time and you don’t really know how things go. That’s a real shame. You don’t need to slam a good school that you really know nothing about. You lost. Move on. We lost last year to American Heritage in the state championship game but I didn’t hear one parent blast that school. They beat us. We took that loss and moved on and will now meet them next week again. You should be ashamed of yourselves Al and Keith. Grow up and be men. Better luck next year.

  11. Bob on December 5th, 2010 2:38 am

Keith, the chiefs sure did lay those hits you were talking about! I’m glad you predicted the outcome better than me. Have to say I told ya so. Another subject, we need to work in our own players attitudes. No reason to lose your cool over intense football.

  12. Ryan on December 5th, 2010 1:38 am

As a member of the 1994 Ernest Ward Team that went to the semi finals in Jacksonville to lose to Jacksonville University Christian I feel your pain. Time will take away the pain of loseing this game and replace it with memories of a great Season. You guys have learned more lessons about Life than you can realize.

  13. tersa trump on December 4th, 2010 7:11 pm

i am sorry that the chiefs didnt make it to state , but i do know that these boys have played hard to get as far as they did. andthey played as a team , win or lose the team played a good year and they will continue to do so so to the team and couches hold your heads high and tall cause in my book yall are winners

  14. Keith on December 4th, 2010 7:00 pm

I am putting together a Hi Lite vid of this game even if it was a loss. I want those who couldn’t make the game to see what an awesome effort Our Chiefs put forth in this game.

  15. Keith on December 4th, 2010 6:29 pm

The score doesn’t reflect the game at all, our Chiefs had the Trinity Defense frustrated all game until the mid 3rd qtr. The score was only 21-14 Trinity. Then we made some mistakes that obviously took there toll and put the game out of reach. For our Chiefs to go to Jacksonville and control the ball and eat up tons of clock against a high school that looks like a Junior College program was an awesome feat. I am proud to say that I am a Northview Chief fan. We lost the game but I saw a group of young men give their absolute best to make it to the next round of the play offs.
And the next thing I’m gonna say is totally my opinion and does not reflect this web site or any other Chiefs opinion that I am aware of…………………..The Trinity fans are the most classless and arrogant high school football fans that I have ever seen. They are exactly what I suspected they were before we even made the trip. Their football team was cocky and arrogant even during warmups. Trinity is nothing less than a private school that recruits kids and beats up on smaller public schools all season long and struts around with their chest sticking out as if they have something to be proud of.

And lets talk about their so called security following one of our players to the locker room screaming at him to get his stuff and get off their property because he is white trash and doesn’t belong on their campus along with other language that just does not line up with a True Christian atmosphere. I hate to take a shot like that but it is true.

  16. rc on December 4th, 2010 12:55 pm

    CHIEFS #1!!!

  20. Chief Grad 2010 on December 4th, 2010 7:32 am

You may have lost, but you made it that far. You have to remember though…that school recruits the best of the best from the area. I’m sure if NHS had that option it would have been an intense game. Nonetheless, you guys got on the board for more than one touchdown and I’m sure definitely held your own on the field. Great Job!

Public schools do not stand a chance against recruiting schools. FHSAA should be ashamed but the amount of money that flows their way makes it all good.
