Perfume Leads To Store Evacuation
October 24, 2010
Strong perfume led the evacuation of a Cantonment convenience store Saturday night.
The Cantonment Station of Escambia Fire Rescue was dispatched to the Tom Thumb at Woodbury Circle and Highway 29 about 6 p.m. Saturday for a strange, irritating odor that was bothering customers and employees. The store was evacuated as a precaution.
First responders were able to determine that the odor was a perfume. There were no injuries reported.

I live with problem every day, welcome to my world………………………………
Giorgio?
Sorry to hear that Carol thats horrible.
I feel for you and know what your talking about. As far as I’m concerned the
stuff should be outlawed.
Most ppl who wear it down here don’t seem to realize that when perfume gets warm it turns sour and they just stink, to say nothing of that they don’t seem to know a little dab will do ya……
Some people may think this is funny, but I don’t. I had to deal with constant perfume/cololgne problems at my work (office space). I fought this for 7 years until my DR finally told me the antibiotics I had to take for constant sinus and ear infections I was getting from perfume exposure was causing liver damage. I worked at Gulf Power Co for 20 years and had to leave because of this. Do ya think they cared – NO!!
There’s no cure for stupid.
Believe me when I say I was not defending the perfume person.
I have severe asthma and never want to smell it again…………….
I had a woman come in to my store one time and she layered her perfume….arrgh!
Thats when you use bath fragrance from the same cologne that
you pat on after your bath, and then spray on when your dressed.
I thought I was going to die right there in my store……….
My throat closed up, my chest hurt, I couldn’t breath, my legs wouldn’t even work,
and when she found out it was her perfume, she started crying
to her husband that I was hurting her feelings……….geeesh!
I was in Grocery Advantage Sunday night. There was a lady there with enough perfume to peel the paint off the walls. There was another family there that smelled as if they had not had a bath for a few weeks. A case of not enough pride vs too much pride.
Many times I can smell the heavy perfume while driving a few cars back from some of these smelly women. I would be be sick in a minute inside their cars , and pass them as quickly as possible.
What odor are they trying to Mask with that much on ?
There is nothing more disgusting than someone reeking of a cologne/perfume odor, especially while you are trying to enjoy a night out (having dinner out and/or a movie). I’ve actually requested to the wait staff that we be moved to another table when this occurs. The other pet peeve of mine is someone who has poor hygiene habits and strong underarm odor. Ladies, please use a small dab only! To the others, please bathe and use an underarm ANTIPERSPIRANT!
They are doing extensive digging in the road next to the tom thumb it could very easily have been a gas line. Better safe than sorry
Perfume/Cologne/Fragrance are all made with up to 500 chemicals in each one. Most of which are highly toxic. Many people become very ill from being around even the slightest amounts. These chemicals can cause seizures and unconciousness and breathing difficulties along with the lesser symptoms headaches, burning eyes, coughing and others. This is not a joke people. Stop laughing.
This is really too funny! I guess it is better to be safe than sorry…poor fireman, what a waste of taxpayers money…unintentionally, of course.
If others not in your personal space can smell it, it’s too strong. Many people are allergic to perfumes because of its ingredients. That’s not to say they don’t like a nice smell, but if a “pleasant” smell makes you sick, it’s no longer a “pleasant” smell. Please be aware of others sensitivities when slathering on perfumes and colognes.
Oh come on now…..
Grown up adults don’t know the difference between meth lab smells and
cheap or any other kind of perfume…..
sure ….right… I buy that whole phone call…..
The fire department got the call as a “caustic turpentine like odor” in an area where there should not have been any chemicals. The store employees said that it was starting to affect their breathing.
With some of the stuff found in backpacks and cars these days (like mobile meth labs, which use some dangerous chemicals) there was no telling what it was. Better to be safe than sorry!
Seriously? The Fire Department? That must have been some STRONG stinky perfume!! Either someone was trying to mask the smell of something else or someone needs a lesson in grooming ettiquette 401. That’s just nasty.
Let me get this straight……the papermill odor is ok, but da foo foo water is just tooooooo much………
Someone should send this story to Jeff Foxworthy…u know when u live in a redneck town when….seriously…I have breathing problems and can smell some women and men a mile off and my chest starts to tighten up like instantly…
I have always been lead to believe that people that bathed in perfume had some kind of odor to hide.
Too Funny!!!
You might be a redneck………….hmmmmmmm…….ode da awful
Some folks are VERY allergic to most perfumes. It can cause all of ones mucous membranes to become inflammed and swollen. Ones airway can be blocked off, and ones eyes can swell shut. I consider it assault, when some salesperson sprays me with perfume, without even asking. For those allergic, it can be quite serious.
hehehehe , omg you must not know anyone who wears that cheap, metallic stinking smelling perfume. Smells like chemical warfare to me , too!
HEHEHEHE
Like cantonment needs any more reasons for the rest of the world to make fun of them. Seriously, evacuate a store because of a perfume? This is ridiculouis!
Some women just don’t understand that it only takes a drop.
They bathe in it, and just don’t know the harm they can cause to people who have alergies and to small children.
The cheap kind is the worst
Did they know where it was coming from?
LOL!!!
You know you’re wearing too much perfume when…
Haha. That’s not the only store that needs to be evacuated because of the stinking perfume!
