Millry Downs Flomaton

October 16, 2010

The Flomaton Hurricanes Lost to Millry Friday night, 32-14.

A 55-yard pass from Rhyheem Dixon to Jacob Newton put the Canes out front with 6:13 to go in the first quarter. But Flomaton will score only one more time in the game with a fourth quarter 8-yard run by Dixon.

On the ground, the teams were almost even on paper, with Millry accumulating 334 yards rushing and Flomaton running for 322 yards. But Millry was strong in the air, with touchdown passes of 32 and 36 yards.

Millry improved to 4-4, 4-2, while Flomaton fell to 4-4, 2-4 in 2A Region 1. The Hurricanes will host Choctaw County for homecoming next Friday night.

If anyone out there thinks that they can be a coach, then why didnt youapply for the job?
Just like at the race track, sure you can be a good driver in the stands, but you arent on the track…
Coach V and his staff are wonderful, they have changed my son into a young man,i give them all the credit in the world for doing what they do SEVEN days a week.
He looks at all of the boys as his children, and when he is on them yelling on Friday nights, its only because SOMEONE is not doing what he is suppose to be doing…just like you yell at your children when you get mad at him…
I would much rather see him out there yelling, opposed to just standing around letting them do what ever they want to do….
Which brings up another issue, someone said we are going to lose some boys to other schools..what,if your child dont get their way with the coach, then your just going to let them change schools??? That is awful for anyone to say, after our school and coaches have put so much time into our children!!

Another thing…that got off with me..STAR PLAYERS..everyone of those boys are stars, just like in everyday life, you have to work hard to get where you want to be…coach is not just gonna give it to anyone.why are some boys on the side line??Just like in real life, you have to wait for your time to get here…my son was on the line too because he was not ready to be out there,he didnt know the plays he wasnt strong enough yet,he just wasnt ready to go on the field yet and was the first to say so.

I hate that everyone has talked so bad about our coaches, school and team…but i think that they are all doing a great job…i think that more people should show up during the week to see what really goes on during practice and spring training…and how about driving by the school on a Saturday or Sunday morning and see WHO you see at the field house…All the coaches, and some players in there watching tapes to only make our team better!!! I think that is wonderful!! Thank you coaches for all you do for our children!!!

I would like to say that Coach V is a good coach, but I think he forgets that he has a lot of great players on the team. Most of the ballplayers are never given the chace to show what they can do. Do you think they like sitting on the sideline, when they are losing and can not help the team because there not thought of as one of the star players. They should earn there starting position for ever game. If one can not do it then pull him out of the game and let one of the others try. But I guess at the rate they are going we may lose a lot of the boys to other schools . I know that some of the top players are leaving the team for other school or they just not going to play anymore. We have a great group of kids playing football and alot of talent being wasted , just make it fair..

  3. fhs09 on October 20th, 2010 3:37 pm

honestly its not about the coaching staff or the parents, its about how bad the kids want to win and if they do not go out there with all their might and will to win then its not going to happen. and really they do their hardest every game and i thinks its really immature for grown ups to be on here acting like they are in highschool. really people lets all be adults here and give every one the credit they deserve and stop judging people we as people can only do so much and i thing every one is doing a great job :)

    To FHS Graduate:

You said “more money in football will not make better players.”
Then I guess we can take away all the money from the team, all the equipment, coaches salaries, and everything else that was bought with money, and not charge any admission to the games, and the players will still be just as good!

You said “Flomaton Fan ask the ball players what kind of support they want”
I am sure they would say they want their parents and fans to support them AND their coach, not put them down and anyone who defends them like I have on a public forum! Why don’t you ask them that!

You said “Just like throwing more money in to classrooms does not make students smarter”
Again, let’s take away all the books, teachers, and anything else that money bought and see how smart the students will become….????

You said, “The band does not have “professional assistants” , they are young some are 7th graders”
????? what are you talking about????? I didn’t say anything about the band nor do I wish to comment on them!

And finally you said, “I am sorry you are the only person in Flomaton who has “understanding of real commitment, respect, and what type of support is required to build a quality program for our children”. ”
Since you feel I am the only one who understands, then I guess I could tell you that I am sorry you are the only one in Flomaton who does not understand??? You don’t even understand my comments to begin with….

First of all, I never said that a 2-A school has the money to provide professional assistants and other needed resources….I said that some of the “other” schools we have to compete with in the Region (2 of them private) DO have those resources and it definitely gives them an advantage, as does having 50-60 players on their teams which gives them more depth, also that many of them have many seniors on their teams, and Flomaton only has 3. You cannot honestly believe that this does not make a difference!

MY MAIN POINT IS ONLY THAT THE TEAM NEEDS TO HEAR POSITIVE COMMENTS AND THAT THE PARENTS AND FANS ARE BEHIND THEM AND THEIR COACHES WIN OR LOSE! IF THERE IS DIVISION AND CRITICISM OF THEIR LEADERS, IT WILL DO NOTHING BUT HURT THE TEAM AND MAKE IT HARDER ON THEM!!! WHY IS THAT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?????????

It shouldn’t matter what colors the boys have on. They’re their to win–not to be judged on what they’re wearing. Black has become a part of their uniforms now, and there’s really nothing anyone can do. It was left up to Coach Hammond (the principal) and all of these people calling him and being rude about need to grow up. Things change, and one thing that has changed is Flomaton wearing black. I don’t hear ya’ll fussing about the softball team, baseball team, and basketball team having black stuff. And Coach V and his family has my support through it all, and I’ll stand behind them no matter what. If you can’t say what you have to say to his face, then maybe you should keep your comments to yourself. Especially if your kid(s) are on the team, in the long run your just bringing them down. That team doesn’t need people degrading what they have. It’s 2A high school football, it’s not like they’ve got Cam Newton or Julio Jones out there! Coach V, keep up the good work! GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. fhsalum on October 19th, 2010 10:31 pm

george, ur right. all this garbage about colors, feelings, and role models is making me sick. name of the game is win. all that other is fine but leave it for the church leagues and the ymca.

this is 2a football. nobody has depth, nobody has studs all over the place. its a matter of finding 11 mean nasty individuals, preparing them, and then winning. thats it.

this is not a post in support of or against the head coach at flomaton. my opinion is leave all the coaches alone and let the principal worry about evaluating the coach. its HIS job

  7. george on October 19th, 2010 6:04 pm

dont care about school colors. you can put on a pink dress and paint your nails so long as you can line up across from the the guy in front of you and whip him. way too much worrying about a teenage boys feelings. if you’re gonna put on the pads, WIN. then everyone’s happy.

  8. FHS GRADUATE on October 19th, 2010 5:46 pm

Flomaton Fan ask the ball players what kind of support they want. I am sure it would be band, cheerleaders and people at the games. I am sure MORE “resources and professional assistants” never even cross there mind. Except for the private schools the schools have budgets. Not sure how you expect a 2-A high school to have “professional assistants”. Just like throwing more money in to classrooms does not make students smarter, more money in football will not make better players. The band does not have “professional assistants” , they are young some are 7th graders. Part of a coach or band directors job is to make the most of what you have. I don’t have anything against coach except he could act a little more professional on the field. But he does make mistakes and the team is not always prepared. People are always going to complain about the job a coach does. I am sure you have also complained about your favorite college or pro teams coach. It is hard on the family in small towns but when you choose to be a coach you know it is coming. I am sorry you are the only person in Flomaton who has “understanding of real commitment, respect, and what type of support is required to build a quality program for our children”. It must be a burden.

  9. caanefann on October 19th, 2010 4:27 pm

i attend flomaton high school and i think that everyone needs to leave coach v alone he has sone a great job coaching the football team and maybe could have done somethings differently but we all make mistakes. and also im so sick of hearing about these blace uniforms they are also a part of our school colors we just arent allowed to wear this color shirt to school green with silver && BLACK are our school colors get over it. the nasty rude comments are disgracing and hurting alot of the hurricanes. things are not always goin to go your way and you need to come to realize this life isnt always fair.

    To “aggervated”:

You said that I should not voice my opinion here on a public forum. What do you call your own post? Is that not voicing your opinion? Why do you think you are better than me or anyone else?

It is strange that you want to silence the positive comments which I have made, but I guess you want to hear only the dirt and criticism of the coach, not those who support the team and coaches as well….

  11. Aggervated on October 19th, 2010 11:12 am

I wish the people that run northescambia.com would not allow comments like this to be posted. It is considered very childish. Just think how many kids, parents, teachers, football players, other teams, that could get on this website and just look how torn apart the team is. I just wish people like “Clide Green” on Facebook, and people like “Flomaton Fan” need to keep quiet. If you wanna voice your opinion, go to the PTA meetings, instead of putting it somewhere where it shouldn’t be.

  12. Flomaton Fan on October 19th, 2010 8:50 am

To FHS graduate: Yes I have been at every game. The type of support I referred to is not regarding attendance! Your comment just proves my point – lack of understanding of real commitment, respect, and what type of support is required to build a quality program for our children.

FACT: A HOUSE DIVIDED CANNOT STAND!

I believe that being “Godly” includes the type of obedience and respect instructed in Epesians Chapter 6. If you read the first 9 verses, it shows us that the right “attitude” precedes the “strength” described in the rest of the chapter. The coach is the leader of the team. Try praying for him instead…. we all need that!

I dont care how yall wanna slice it and dice it but Leah is basically saying that fhs football has been terrible for 50 years so why should we fans care anyway.Reminding us we were nothing until heaven sent them to save the program. We were nothing before they came anyway so how dare us come here commenting on play calling. But i say no Leah we are gonna keep commenting and being passionate about fhs football and having high expectations as we have had for 50 years contrary to what coach after coach told you about us.We only want these HIGHLY talented, smart, tough boys to be put in the best possible play and position in the game so they have the best chance at being succesful and win.The boys are young but good and fast and capable of going the distance any down..but not when you run up the middle for no gain for 3 qtrs vs leroy. When they got some space in the 4th finally what happened?80 and 90 yard tds to the outside by #2 and #11.They couldnt stop our guys in space but we clogged the middle for 3 qtrs..??????

As a parent watching from the stands, Yes I pay my 6 bucks on Friday night and can agree or disagree about the poor job our head football coach does. That my right. I wish that Coach v would leave so your family can life in another town. Maybe move in the night so we wakeup and your gone! That what the lucky folks in Florala say. All kids have some measure of talent, but its the coach’s job to develop that talent and put it to good use. Everybody can critique our coach’s job of coaching, but his rude manners and poor personality make him what his is.
Not to mention his favoritism. Rules are made for everybody not the ones we pick and choose. No class, can’t call plays, can’t teach so why’s he still here. I believe that the Lord is in control too, and pray he will find you a new home real soon.

  15. robin on October 18th, 2010 3:22 pm

Seems to me, that there’s not a single Friday night that someone is totally happy with the team, or the coaches! My son plays on this team, and let me tell you, he truly hates hearing or seeing any of this about the coach !! he told me that he admires that man, and it hurts him to think we as the grownup’s, the parents are acting so immaturely.. I believe the boys are old enough to make their own decisions, if they didnt want to be a FLOMATON HURRICANE???? they wouldnt do it… I will be honest with you all, I’ve thought things also, but, I know I couldnt go out there and do what our coaches do! and, i’m gonna continue to be right there for our CANES.. No matter what.

  16. flomaton alumni on October 18th, 2010 1:57 pm

It is not good for people to talk so bad about the coach on a public forum. But, on the other hand it is worse for the coaches wife to get on one and put down his players and their families.

  17. FHS GRADUATE on October 18th, 2010 12:50 pm

Leah I hope your husband is a Godly man. But you regardless of how he coaches he could act a little more controlled on the field. If he his a christian man God will overcome all the talk. No matter how much it hurts to be talked about laying the blame on the team for the losses will not help only hurt the team.
Flomaton FAn do you go to the games? A school this size could not ask for more fan support. Most away games there are more FHS people at the game than the home team!

  18. Flomaton Fan on October 18th, 2010 9:19 am

Regardless of how you feel about the coaches, you should not put them down on a public forum. That just puts the whole team and community down. However, there are a lot of things to consider. My first observation is not on the coaching, but on the morale of the team itself. For some reason, it seems like after the Mobile Christian loss, that “fire” has just not been there, beginning with the Jay game. Maybe the team has been more discouraged by comments they are hearing from other people? If the team and coaches had our full support, then I bet that would make all the difference. I can promise you Leroy and other great teams do have full support. That means even when you disagree you still stand behind them. Is Coach V perfect? Of course not. Does he make mistakes sometimes? Yes of course, just like anyone else. Does Flomaton have the support that they need? No. Does Flomaton have huge coaching staffs with a lot of professional assistants who specialize in each component of the team like a lot of the other schools in the region? No. Does Flomaton have senior, team leaders like all the other schools who have beaten them? No. Does Flomaton have 45-60 players like many of the other teams who have beaten us? No. My opinion is that Flomaton’s struggles are due to a combination of these and other problems. Flomaton needs more support, more resources, more professional assistants, and more depth and experience. This could all happen if everyone wanted to contribute instead of criticize. I hate to think of the players reading negative comments on here. I also hate to think that my son who is a close friend of Coach V’s oldest son, other friends of theirs, and his children that could read the negative comments…. Instead they should see comments from people who support the team and stand behind them win or lose. Go Canes!!!

  19. fhs graduate. '10 babyy! on October 17th, 2010 3:43 pm

The Vickery family has my respect and always will. Compared to what Flomaton football used to be, Coach V has done miraculous things for our team! And we finally got to where our stands are full on Friday nights because our team started winning. Soo, now the people of Flomaton have nothing better to do than degrade Coach V? If you’re so grown, say it to his face. Not on NorthEscambia. I would be really upset if Coach V and his family left Flomaton, but they have to do what’s good for them. Like Mrs. Leah said, God helps them make their decisions..NOT MEN they can’t even say anything to their faces.

  20. 76cane on October 17th, 2010 2:32 pm

Why the black uniforms? FHS –Green Hurricanes

  21. Leah on October 17th, 2010 12:01 pm

It’s so easy to pay your $6 on Friday night and become super coach. All these people sit in the stands and think they know exactly what play calling would work. Do you not realize that every play is designed to score, IF it is executed to perfection. Which means every player has to do EXACTLY what they are supposed to do, no one can miss a block, or run to the wrong side, or fumble the ball, or not cover the receiver, or hold the ball in the wrong hand, etc…!! You people have no idea what goes on Monday – Thursday, but somehow you have all the right answers to win every Friday night. We are still a very young team, our best DB is a 9th grader!!!!!!!!!!! We play in the toughest region in 2A ball. We are playing teams this year that are loaded with seniors (Leroy -19, Millry – 10, Mobile Christian – 15 etc…~~~ Flomaton has 3 of which only 2 start). We lost one of our starting LB’s ( who was a leader on the field) a few weeks ago to a season ending knee injury. In the history of Flomaton football, there have been way more losing seasons than winning ones. If I am not mistaken, FHS has made it to the play-offs 12 times in over 50 years of playing football. Flomaton was at the bottom when Coach V came in to take over, and he has put the program back on the map. Coach after coach advised him NOT to come to FHS, that it was a dead end, that you couldn’t win here, that there were no athletes, and on and on. Two of the trips to the play-offs were with him as head coach. I am not making excuses, just pointing out the truth. We have a few good athletes on our team, but at best Flomaton is an average team. Next year, we should be better~these boys will be a little bigger, a little stronger, and a little more mature (with a little more experience than they had this year).
My livelihood depends on how well 15, 16, 17, and 18 year old kids perform on a Friday night. Hopefully, they haven’t had a fight with their girlfriend, or their parents. Hopefully, they haven’t found out their girlfriend is pregnant. Hopefully, they didn’t have to fix their own supper or wash their own clothes because they don’t know where their mom has been for 2 days. Hopefully, they didn’t fail a BIG test that morning. So you see, in my book it’s not all about the wins and losses~ it’s about being a good, Godly influence in the lives of young boys. It’s about planting seeds of character and morals & values that you hope will begin to grow and blossom! It’s about being there when they need $20 to pay for a lost library book. It’s about building relationships of trust, so when these boys are men they look back with respect for the man their coach was. We have lived in a lot of places, and everywhere we go men (who were boys on a football team he coached) come to visit, or call just to say hey.
George (if that is your real name) and Formercane, I can promise you that if Coach V decided to leave Flomaton after this year it would be because he feels that is what GOD is leading him to do because it is best for him, me (his wife) and our four children. God is in control of our lives, not men.

  22. formercane on October 16th, 2010 4:20 pm

im sure if coach v worked half as hard at coaching rather than turning to the crowd and cheering, the team may be more prepared. it is embarrassing to go to games and look on the field just to see the head coach make an ass of himself jumping around and hollering like a fool, a head coach needs poise and im sorry, vickery just dont have it. thank you.

  23. flomatoncane on October 16th, 2010 1:07 pm

Could we NOT down the coaches so much? They work their butts off for these boys, and I”m pretty tired of people saying it’s THEIR fault. We have a great team, and with a little more preperation, we can do much better. Blaming it on the coaching staff isn’t gonna make the players any better.

Like my grandmother always says, if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

  24. george on October 16th, 2010 8:43 am

no way this group of kids should look this bad. vickery is a good guy, just not a good head coach. need to clean house top to bottom.

  25. formercane on October 16th, 2010 4:55 am

good play call coach!! flomaton don’t pass on 4th and long, but first and ten they decide to pass to the end zone for a pick to seal the deal for Millery. it would be great if flomaton decided to start from scratch next year with a whole new coaching staff, preferably not an offensive line coach!
