IRS: Dozens Of Area Groups Could Lose Nonprofit Status (With List)

July 30, 2010

Dozens of prominent North Escambia area groups are in danger of losing their nonprofit status from the IRS for failing to file the proper paperwork for three consecutive years.

Groups like the chambers of commerce in Century and Jay; the fire departments in McDavid, Cantonment and Nokomis; community centers in Century, Byrneville, Davisville; and many more social, civic and charitable organizations are on a list released by the Internal Revenue Service.

Across the country, about 325,000 groups have failed to comply with IRS requirements, risking their nonprofit classification. The IRS said the organizations can keep their non-profit status by filing the proper paperwork by October 15.

“Our message is simple: If you don’t have your filings up to date, now is the time to take action and get back in compliance,” Doug Shuman, IRS commissioner said in a released statement. “We’re taking these steps today to go the extra mile and help small tax-exempt groups.”

    You know ppl…
There are reasons why the IRS has to keep track of these things.
If you don’t understand WHY then there is no reason to tell you since
    they are so obvious.

It’s not that hard to comply with anything governmental.
I have done it for years. If, however, you don’t want to or are too
lazy to bother, then you get what you ask for.

I knew someone who got a government grant and ran non profit,
and didn’t do any book work. She also used the money foolishly for
everything under the sun and then couldn’t figure out why she went
    broke.

I told her when she was crying about it that maybe the first thing she
shouldn’t have done was take a $15000.00 cruise with the money.

Non profit is for ppl who are supposed to do good things, however,
ppl sometimes do all the wrong things and someone has to
    over see these things.

After all It is ALL OF OUR MONEY!

Thank goodness there are a lot of orgs. that do what they are supposed
to do plus take care of the money and paper trail and file what their supposed
to with are government. There is always paperwork buddy!

I am treasurer for a small non profit group, all volunteers. Average donations are 200 – 400 a year. There is $424.00 in the bank account at this moment. When I took the job there were no filings required, and I had not heard of any changes until this article.
How much are “they” going to spend coming after this group?

YAY!!!!Didn’t make this list. As a new participant for a non-profit organization, I worked hard for three years now to get this issue cleared up with the IRS. I do have to say I learned the hard way and wow WHAT A MESS. Each year from the past that was not filed had to be researched and all documents for each year had to be filed. Some may need a professional tax preparer to assist them. Then to add to it, some docs. were not up to standards and had to be corrected, which then came with penalties. Just another added problem to clear up. Just a note for list: Get this taken care of ASAP to avoid any other complications and be patient, it will be aggravating.

About this speed limit analogy. Once reminded by the “sign”(which is always there to remind you) there is a choice, to speed and take the risk of a ticket or do the speed limit. With this exemption filing the IRS is saying they didn’t have to remind you. Those who fail to file lose their status then they are notified. I do have to say this time the IRS did send a final reminder. If one was to look at the full list that the IRS has they would see that there are several prominent originations all over the country that have been notified not just the small ones. So there is a communication issue. Just another way the government uses to find revenue from the ones who are trying to help out society.

    consider this the reminder

    POWER TO THE PEOPLE

    POWER TO THE GOVERNMENT
    OF THE PEOPLE
    BY THE PEOPLE
    FOR THE PEOPLE

In the mean time, Imagine taxing the revenues of organizations without revenue

    NO SURPRISE…the govt wants more

Well, actually, all of these organizations have probably been reminded. Yes, the requirements did change, and organizations that were not previously required to file yearly data with the IRS are now required to do so. They should have all received notifications stating the new requirements. I happen to have seen these notifications, and they’re pretty explanatory. Most of the organizations just need to file a simple information return using the IRS’s website. It takes about 5 minutes once you set up your account. If you happen to be involved in one of these organizations, go to the IRS website and look under the nonprofit tab. You should find all you need to know there. And NO, I do not “love” the IRS. This is just one thing they changed yet kept pretty simple.

Robert, according to the IRS website, beginning in 2008, small tax-exempt organizations that previously were not required to file returns because their gross receipts did not exceed a certain threshold may be required to file an annual electronic notice.
So it is not a matter of them having to be reminded but in fact a new government regulation came only two tax years ago changing the rules. I am sure these organizations focus on their prime mission and do not have the resources to hire accountants and lawyers to scan the IRC code for changes; they are manned by volunteers who give up their time to serve the community.
Look between the lines and you will see thata cash strapped federal government is tightening its grip and looking for every dime it can recover; to that end they are willing to put on extra civil service staff to review the flood of filings from previously exempt organizations. Or is it just further intrusion into our lives through mandated data mining.
And to follow on you analogy of speeding, you do get a reminder, it is called the speed limit sign. The cop merely enforces it when you exceed it.

Robert, so you are saying that all the ones listed (and this is the short list) are irresponsible. You must work for the IRS or a Tax office.

  11. Robert on July 30th, 2010 8:09 am

I don’t think the IRS should be responsible to REMIND you what you need to do. That would be like getting a reminder from the cops reminding you not to speed.(Oh Im sorry, I forgot the limit). Its time people take responsibility for themselves and stop depending on others to remind them of what they need to do.

With this many out of compliance, one could blame the IRS for lack of communication. If the proper communication from the IRS was given I’m sure that most if not all of these wouldn’t be in this situation. Once a year we all recieve some type of reminder……you know 1040 forms ect… why should these non-profit’s be any different. Looks like to me the IRS is the one at fault and now wants to put the scare in these non-profit organizations because of the IRS’s failure to do what is required….Typical!
